Y Factors 2017: Patriots vs. Jets

-by DNOMN8R314

It may be Week 17, it may be the Jets, it may be a favorable cold weather game (oxymoron!), but the game still matters. We shouldn’t sleep on it either. (But we should get plenty of sleep leading up to it. The holidays are exhausting.)

The needs of many…: This year’s injury list has resembled 2015 more than 2016; beyond the reserve lists, several higher-profile skill players are recovering from injuries. While the Patriots would love to see such players as Kyle Van Noy and Chris Hogan on the field Sunday, their health for the playoffs is a more dire need, and Bill Belichick will not risk aggravating the existing injury by rushing them too early. As such, players lower on the depth chart will once again need to step up to produce a win.

Petty grievances: With Josh McCown on injured reserve, the Jets’ quarterback depth chart consists of Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg. While the Patriots defense had their way with Petty in his start against New England last year, there is no way Belichick or Matt Patricia will be thinking of this game as a cakewalk. (Because I have to point it out: the most recent New England defensive touchdown – not the last interception return for a score – came against the Jets at the end of December two years ago. Another one would be fantastic. Please.)

Don’t forget your booties: Foxboro’s New Year’s Eve treat for their home team is frigid weather, a climate in which the Patriots tend to have success. That of course means they have to be well-prepared for playing in that weather, something Belichick is going to ensure – the Patriots have already practiced outside this week, for instance. As Belichick will surely say, the freezing cold will impact both teams, so there will be no excuses, just preparation this week and play on Sunday, and that is all the team can control.

And now for the final BSJ TUMS-O-METER prediction of the regular season.
We’ll keep this simple. The Pats have a game to determine the #1 seed on New Year’s Eve Day. Most likely Jim heads to a party in the evening. Prediction: 1 case… that he can dispense during the day and night any way he likes.

Enjoy the game, and enjoy the last hours of 2017. Here’s to a joyous 2018, everyone.

But, but, but, but, the media hates the Patriots.

ESPN never picks the Patriots.

Here are the actual ESPN predictions.

ESPN doesn’t hate New England. They love the Patriots! They love controversial Patriots stories. It gets clicks and page views. Gets other media outlets talking about it. ESPN has published some pretty questionable, dubious articles in the past. It just makes them a step above the tabloids. You know what, though? Tabloids make money, too.Report

My predictions for the weekend because why not. Chiefs def. Titans – I think KC are going to kill them with play action, and I don’t think the TEN offense can exploit KC’s coverage problems. Will be a laugher imo. Falcons def. Rams – I think the Rams make a backbreaking mistake and lose in a shootout. Just a hunch. Jaguars def. Our defense was all kinds of confused in Week 1. They’re not going to to be caught off guard, again. Brady can exploit that secondary. Gronk is back to his dominant self (and there’s no Eric Berry). How soon fans forget what it is like to win after losing for a long time.

When the Patriots made the playoffs in the 1985 season fans were so excited that they tore down the gold post and walked down rotue 1 with them. The gold post eventually hit a electrical wire.

You’re telling me he wasn’t right? This day has been a fiasco! I have no doubt Kraft regrets hiring BB now.Report

Remember that the 49ers passed on Brady to pick Giovanni Carmazzi, because the last one was a great athlete.Report

I grow sick and tired of people equating good qb play with athleticism or a cannon arm. Accuracy is the most important physical factor not a strong arm or being able to run the ball.Report

I think a QB with good accuracy and good IQ are the main skills Pats seek in draftReport

Agree. Accuracy and mental make up are the most important factors for a good qb imoReport

Can we at least get a list of who has won Patriot of the week? I’m almost positive names like Dwayne Allen and Brandon King and Jon Jones are gonna be on the list and no Tom Brady hahaReport

Aren’t they “practice players” of the week?? Why would TB want to be one of those? Makes no sense.Report

Mike White, QB, Western Kentucky Height: 6-4. Weight: 225. Projected 40 Time: 4.79. Projected Round (2018): 6-FA. 1/4/18: White completed 66 percent of his passes in 2017 for 4,177 yards with 26 touchdowns and eight interceptions. Sources say they are grading White as a very late-rounder or undrafted free agent. They think he has good size and accuracy, sees the field pretty well, and is smart. They also believe, however, that his arm strength and below-average athleticism give him a ceiling as a third-string quarterback in the NFL. In 2016, White completed 67 percent of his passes for 4,363 yards… Read more »

Weak arm? He had a 60 percent completion on throws of over 20 yards, That was the best in college football.Report

The question is will he make it to the second or third round? If the answer is no then it’s all irrelevant.Report

I think he will be picked higher than what WalterFootball is saying, But i always like when scouts reports say the guy is accurate, but he won’t be good in the NFL, because he is short or skinny or that he can’t throw deep ballsReport

Then he would definitely be a candidate. I just don’t see BB ever using a 1st round on a QB in this draft or any really.Report

Felger and Mazz are insufferable today. Going through the whole article and taking it as gospel and cutting off phone calls who are disputing them. Also saying how much they are regretting trading Jimmy now and saying BB didn’t get anything for him out of spite.Report

I honestly don’t know why you’d listen to that show. They’re the most insufferable trolls on the planet (from what I’ve heard). The only time I ever listen to sports radio is Toucher and Rich but that’s more for comedy than their hot sports takes.Report

Interesting tidbit on the Rich Eisen show this morning- TB’s guru was also the trainer for LT and was banned from the Chargers facility- Alex would fly out to SD to give LT treatments and fly back to NE.Report

I would rather pick a QB in lower rounds but with already good accuracy and QUICK release, a guy with above average IQ and teach him at least 2 seasons behind Brady.
Just a pick a prospect some upside that isn’t showed on mock drafts.

I remember i hated the Jimmy pick in the draft (i wanted Fiedorowicz, Texans TE). But after studying him a little bit, reading some scout reports, watching some of his videos, i started to feel that with time this kid could become something special. Brissett never gave me the same feeling.Report
