If the Patriots Were a Baseball Team

-by DNOMN8R314

Merry Christmas everyone! With the calendar at its end and this being a football site, what could be more relevant a post for December 25 than a random hypothesis of Patriot players on a baseball diamond. (Almost anything, I know.)

Obviously this is a purely hypothetical exercise, with only some physical traits taken into account – would you really see a 300-pound individual on the diamond? (Okay, maybe Prince Fielder.) But I believe this makes as much sense as any attempt would be.

One FYI before beginning: I limited myself to players on the current 53-man roster. Had I included players on injured reserve, Julian Edelman (2B), Dont’a Hightower (SS), and Marcus Cannon (fifth SP) would have been included.

Starting lineup:

  • #14, Brandin Cooks, left field: Cooks has the prototypical speed for a leadoff man, and as a wide receiver has the hands to snag anything hit into the outfield.
  • #33, Dion Lewis, second base: A smaller player who might not have as much power, Lewis profiles as a middle infielder. I’d love to use his elusiveness but there’s not as much opportunity for elusiveness, except in rundowns.
  • #12, Tom Brady, catcher: Like a quarterback, the catcher controls the game, aligning defenses and calling pitches. Of course, Brady was drafted as a catcher but chose football. And the best hitter almost always bats third.
  • #87, Rob Gronkowski, first base: Gronk’s power on the football field makes him an idea cleanup hitter, and his agility for a big man spots him at first base, where he’ll be able to catch any throw from the infield.
  • #46, James Develin, designated hitter: We’re in the AL – I mean AFC – so there’s a DH in this lineup. And that spot goes to Develin, the powerful fullback who’d hit baseballs as strongly as he blocks defenders.
  • #24, Stephon Gilmore, third base: Gilmore has the length for third base, able to cover the line and the hole between third and short.
  • #32, Devin McCourty, center field: The obvious choice for center field, McCourty’s range at safety would serve him well in the outfield. He bats seventh as a “second leadoff hitter.”
  • #53, Kyle Van Noy, shortstop: Replacing the injured Hightower, Van Noy as the main communicator on defense takes that role in the infield as shortstop.
  • #21, Malcolm Butler, right field: Another defensive back joins the outfield, as Butler’s catch-up ability at corner would allow him to run down fly balls.
  • #60, David Andrews, starting pitcher: As the man who starts each play on the gridiron, Andrews’ equivalent role as a baseball player is the man who starts each play with a pitch.

Bench:

  • #2, Brian Hoyer, catcher: As New England’s backup signal caller, Hoyer fits the profile and falls into the family of journeyman catchers.
  • #34, Rex Burkhead, utility infielder: Burkhead has shown incredible versatility as a running back, meaning he could fit at any infield position. Range? Hands? He’s got it.
  • #15, Chris Hogan, utility outfielder: As another player with speed and range, Hogan profiles nicely in the outfield.
  • #18, Matthew Slater, utility everywhere: Slater’s main role as a Patriot is on special teams, but he has filled in as a wide receiver and safety for extended periods, making him an excellent choice as our all-purpose utility man.

Bullpen:

  • #77, Nate Solder, starting pitcher: Since the performance of the offensive line has such an impact on any game – protecting the quarterback, making plays effective – the offensive line becomes the starting rotation. Solder is the veteran starter who keeps the rotation strong.
  • #69, Shaq Mason, starting pitcher: The young and on-the-upswing Mason gets the third slot, in the role of young starter on the upswing.
  • #62, Joe Thuney, starting pitcher: Thuney is another young guard who is very good but not at the same level of skill or consistency as the others. Thus, he gets the fourth spot in the rotation.
  • #68, LaAdrian Waddle, starting pitcher: On the offensive line, Waddle has been a surprisingly good fill-in for the injured Cannon, thereby making him our fifth starter.
  • #3, Stephen Gostkowski, long relief pitcher: Like a long reliever, a kicker may have to take the field for a long portion of the game (relatively speaking), if there are plenty of field goals, or not at all. Plus I needed to get Gostkowski somewhere on this roster.
  • #98, Trey Flowers, relief pitcher: Since the main job of relievers is to protect a lead or prevent a deficit from getting out of hand, the rest of the relief spots go to defenders. Flowers, as the Patriots’ best edge player, gets the first slot.
  • #23, Patrick Chung, relief pitcher: Chung would also be a key member of the bullpen given his use in all defensive situations, used in coverage as well as against the run.
  • #97, Alan Branch, relief pitcher: Branch has less versatility than Flowers or Chung, but is still an important cog in the defense, and therefore in the bullpen.
  • #52, Elandon Roberts, relief pitcher: Major League Baseball has seen an increasing trend of specialty relievers, who may come into the game to face only left-handed or right-handed batters. Roberts, as a primarily run-stopping linebacker, fits this role.
  • #31, Jonathan Jones, relief pitcher: So does Jones, who plays slot cornerback against certain receivers. However, Jones’ rise from special teamer only to capable defender fits that of a receiver who may first be used as a specialist but earns trust in more situations.
  • #30, Duron Harmon, closer: Obviously.

Have a most merry Christmas, everyone!

Giants haven’t signed a GM yet – wondering if Caserio is lined up for interview during the bye week. In the back of my mind I keep thinking he will be in charge when Belichick (and Adams) retire in four years. So my guess is the Giants hire a GM this week, then bring in McDaniels for a HC interview during the bye week. If Caserio does interview, then it’s definitely a package deal with McD. In that event, I wonder if Pioli comes back or if there is someone internal already lined up, similar to OC & DC.Report

The Giants job is a plum of a job if your working in the NFL.So, if not the Giants than what job are they waiting for in 2019?

They will only waiting for Belichick to leave?Report

The Giants organization and job has been a good one for a long time. So, I can see where Caserio and McDaniels would look at it as a good opportunity. I think they will want to look into it.Report

Supposedly Riddick at ESPN has a relationship with McD, because he said early in the year they both almost went to SF.

The Giants said they want to find their GM first and then have him be part of the HC hiring process. So I don’t know if that eliminates Caserio or not based on conflicting timelines.Report

S PATRICK CHUNG, 87.4 OVERALL GRADE
Chung led all defenders in targets into his coverage area with nine, and topped all defenders in game grade. Chung allowed just three of those passes to be caught for 27 yards and breaking up three of them. Most of his damage was against Charles Clay as Taylor targeted the tight end five times against Chung, who allowed just one reception for 11 yards while notching two of his pass defenses. The veteran from Oregon is having one of the best seasons of his career in coverage and his improvement was on display against Buffalo.Report

Glad to see they’ve found an upgrade over Eric Lee, however minor.
About Pitt not using Harrison much anymore… I’m sure he’s lost a few steps. But that Vince Williams INT was what the Steelers are trying to do right now in a nutshell – have a bunch of linebackers on the field and disguise who will rush vs who will cover. A true edge player like James Harrison doesn’t fit that as well.
Where Harrison might make a noticeable difference, imo is run defense.Report

dp73
Member
Free agent

Harrison is worth a shot.

Pittsburgh has 12 more sacks then we do so we probably need Harrison more in that role then Pittsburgh. I think BB is thinking Harrison can help some at getting to the QB. Pressure will help our secondary as wellReport

hugowasmyhomeboy
Member
Free agent

I hope Harrison improves our pass rush too.
But even if he doesn’t, I think his being fundamentally sound (as Jim alluded to) and tough vs the run can implicitly improve our pass defense.
Give up less yardage on 1st down runs -> longer 3rd downs -> less pressure on the coverage. Don’t lose the edge and let the QB run around -> less easy QB runs and less pressure on the coverage to cover a scramble drill.Report

dp73

Whatever some fans may think of Harrison he is a pro.Report

BoSoxJim

I disagree somewhat. Harrison should be a big upgrade over Lee. Lee has no discipline in his pass rush whatsoever. Harrison knows how to get to the QB and what to do when he gets there. It may not result in a bunch of sacks at this point in his career, but it should increase true pressure (not pressure that a QB can easily step up to avoid).Report
