Y Factors 2017: Patriots vs. Bills

-by DNOMN8R314

Merry Christmas Eve, everyone! We get to handle family and friends; the Patriots must take on the Bills.

35’s the Mike: As I mentioned three weeks ago, Patriots who were once members of the Buffalo squad tend to play well against their former team. Chris Hogan has been injured and may not play, Stephon Gilmore is already New England’s top cornerback, and Eric Lee (whom I omitted from last game’s ex-Bills paragraph, a blunder) made his mark in the first NE-BUF game and is a solid member of the defensive end rotation. But the player in focus this week is running back Mike Gillislee, inactive for six straight games after falling behind Dion Lewis and Rex Burkhead on the depth chart but projected to play again with Burkhead and James White injured. While Lewis will be the clear top back, Gillislee’s playing time, both how many snaps he receives and in what situation, will be something to watch, as it could show us if Bill Belichick sees him as having a role in the postseason and beyond.

Corner office: That said, Gilmore will still be an important part of the match-up, as while Buffalo’s offense is heavily centered around running back LeSean McCoy, the Bills’ passing game is still important to stop. The only NFL team in New York has swapped top receivers since three weeks ago; Jordan Matthews is on injured reserve and Kelvin Benjamin is healthy. Benjamin is a 6-foot-5 former first-round pick who fell out of favor in Carolina, and it will be Gilmore’s responsibility to keep him quiet, especially in the red zone.

Stuffing the turkey: Still, McCoy is the centerpiece of the Bills’ offense, and stopping him will be imperative. Defensive tackle (and ex-Bill) Alan Branch has already been ruled out, a blow to New England’s run defense, which has been exploited in recent weeks. The Patriots’ defensive interior will consist of starters Malcom Brown and Lawrence Guy, with Adam Butler and Ricky Jean Francois (who contributed well against Pittsburgh) adding additional support. But the entire front seven must put forth a strong showing in order to quiet Buffalo and celebrate their Christmas Eve with a win.

And now for this week’s BSJ TUMS-O-METER prediction.
The usual considerations are in play such as playoff seeding, injuries, and a quick rematch with a division opponent. However, we must throw in the holidays for good measure.
Prediction: 4 bottles. 3 for the game and 1 for the holiday celebrations.

There was one instance where it looked like a player threw an elbow on his helmet during a tackle, but could have been incidental. Bills definitely kept the game within the lines.

AFC has 4 teams LAC / BAL / TEN / BUF
But #1 seed is still open. when is the last time top 2 in each conference could win 1st seed on week 17?

Interesting how low the general TD totals for QB’s this year. Wentz is still leading with 33, and would probably be about 40 if he lasted the year. But, guys like Brees, Rivers, Ben, Ryan, etc.. in the mid 20’s. Weird?

Ben Volin✔
@BenVolin
Gronk now has 69 catches this year (of course) for 1,084 yards and 8 TDs.

Needs 11 catches, 116 yards or 6 TDs next week to earn the final $2.5m incentive. Or just earn First Team All Pro, which he might.

Kerthwap

Surprised he didn’t request 69 as the required number for the incentive to kick in,

A win is a win and all… but the Pats need to do a better job of making it difficult for opposing teams to move the ball between the 20s.
Part of bend-but-don’t-break, is making the other team hang themselves instead of doing it yourself. That means challenge them to pull off long drives. The Pats managed to not break today, but they’re giving up 20-30 yard chunks.

rondo723

lack of forced turnovers has also been noticeable lately

hugowasmyhomeboy
Member

Elandon Roberts freaks me out. He makes some plays against the run that a less gifted run stopper doesn’t make. I don’t think it’s worth the two matador-esque, high percentage chunk plays a week he’s due to give up.

rondo723
Member
Free agent

he is an incredible liability doing pretty much anything other than run blitzing. operating in open space is especially horrifying. big hits though.

BoSoxJim
Member
Free agent

Well, his run blitzes is where he gets into trouble (other than trying to cover in space). He’ll shoot the wrong gap and give up runs that way. That being said, he’s still the best run defender of all the LBs they have (minus HT who I’m not counting right now).

rondo723

eh i’m just happy he makes good when he guesses right…i’ll take what i can get

BoSoxJim

Plus, they have been the beneficiary of some plays in the end zone that normally would be TDs. ASJ’s fumble at the pylon (Butler did make a great play, but 99 out of 100 times that’s a TD). Jesse James dropped TD. Charles Clay dropped TD, etc.

Out of all the games that happened, the “controversial” overturned TD is still the #1 story on ESPN. I guess the TD would have counted for the 21 points the Bills lost by. On an unrelated note, I hope Al Riveron gets the fruitcake I sent him by Christmas morning.

Interesting discussion below about the QBs. Say Garoppolo turns out to be really good, and we just chose 2-3 years of Brady over 10 years of, say, Tony Romo. Is that really a decision you regret? That’s 2-3 years in which you are a distinct favorite to win the Super Bowl. This year, then one or two more. #12’s cap number this year is $14M. Its not just that he is a special player. But over the window of his contract, he will give the Patriots a financial advantage over the rest of the league in addition to a QBing… Read more »
hugowasmyhomeboy
Member
Free agent

What hurts about it is “only” getting a 2nd round pick, when teams are drafting QBs in the first every year. But the Pats didn’t have leverage. And by keeping Garoppolo they insulated themselves against needing their backup QB this year to hold down the fort while Brady was out, which has value in itself.

hugowasmyhomeboy
Member
Free agent

Brady the player, combined with Brady the contract, is just a unique value proposition in the sport. Its like being the NBA team with LeBron James.

MrLucky
Member
Free agent

It would be a discussion if Brady was a bum now and they were keeping him just out of loyalty, but the dude is gonna win MVP again and is still the best in the business. Give me 2-3 years of guaranteed greatness and a chance to win the SB over 10 years of uncertainty. Plus I would just never want to see TB12 in another uniform.

LaFeteMattDog
Member
Free agent

That is a very selective comparison. What if you are choosing between 2-3 years of decline ning Brady vs 10-15 years of Aaron Rodger? I do think it is worthy of monitoring as it could be a decision the franchise regrets 19 years from now.

LaFeteMattDog
Member
Free agent

Damn it is hard to type on a phone

hugowasmyhomeboy
Member
Free agent

I mean, you could say 10-15 years of Tom Brady, while we’re at it. I just used Romo because that seems like a plausible best-case scenario. Or at least, a “best case” that is probable enough to be used in the exercise.

LaFeteMattDog
Member
Free agent

I don’t know. I think Jimmy G has a very good chance to be better than Romo.

hugowasmyhomeboy
Member
Free agent

I don’t think he does. I don’t think Deshaun Watson is going to be a future HOF either.
And I don’t mean to knock Jimmy G at all. Tony Romo was a stellar quarterback.

LaFeteMattDog
Member
Free agent

What has he shown to make you doubt him?

hugowasmyhomeboy

Free agent

Garoppolo or Watson?
Like I said, I don’t doubt him. That’s why I’m comparing him to Tony Romo.

LaFeteMattDog

Well comparing him to Romo in a best case scenario is doubting him in my estimation…unless you are listing qualities of a great dude to get s beer with.

A lot of folks are missing the biggest benefit of a competent, young QB in today’s NFL. It is not the potential to grow. It is the fact that they are CHEAP. Brady was from 2000-2005 (3 SBs), Roethlisberger was from from 2004-2008 (1 SB + 1 in 2009), Russell Wilson was from 2012-2015 (1 SB). Notice a team-building trend there? Jimmy G cannot provide this level of value to the 49ers or any other team because he has to be paid. Which means that he has to develop as a starter while costing his team the flexibility to surround… Read more »

We got extremely lucky with Tom in more ways than one. First, he develops into a Hall of Famer. Then, he willingly makes half as much money as Joe Flacco as far as NFL salaries go. So even the meta stuff in the NFL is a team game, really.

PatriotPrideBoy

If that rumor about BB not wanting a first rounder for Jimmy G is true then it might mean that he wasn’t about to send JG to a black hole like Cleveland (unlike Collins). JG and Shanahan have clearly meshed well so far. On the other hand, there’s no telling what he might look like on a team that’s awful/mismanaged from top to bottom.

we did not trade the player, we traded less than half a season of the player + the right to pay him based on that audition. that is not worth a first to anybody.

Deadsmack #NotDone

so we should have traded him in the offseason

MrScratch

They wanted to keep him, but I think his camp had no interest in even discussing an extension.

rondo723
Member

it’s a difficult decision because he is your backup. sometimes you have to take it down to the last moment and entertain all possibilities – trying to extend him, considering franchising, plus evaluating Brady’s play. Retaining Jimmy on the roster for half a season does provide value.

NorthShore
Member
Free agent

Why is it so hard for some of you to admit that JG might have been our next franchise QB, and that he is good? It’s not a knock on Brady to say so.

BoSoxJim
Member
Free agent

“might” is the word of the century. That’s a lot to gamble on when you “know” what you have in TB12.

NorthShore
Member
Free agent

The Pats didn’t know what they had in Brady, either, and might never have, had Bledsoe not gone down. That’s how it works. However, JG showed obvious promise even before he was traded, or BB wouldn’t have been so loathe to trade him until the last second.

BoSoxJim

OMG! He was a 6th round pick making peanuts! They found out what they had in him when he took over for Bledsoe and they won their first Lombardi!

BoSoxJim

Then their 2nd and 3rd…..

NorthShore

You’re making my argument. He took over, hence got the opportunity to win those Lombardis. JG never got the opportunity with the Pats, but that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t have, or isn’t capable.

BoSoxJim

No, I’m not making your argument. The Patriots didn’t have to gamble on “what might be” with Brady.

SamiG
Member

Exactly, Brady wasnt really a gamble.

Mattsky
Member
Free agent

I think Jimmy is good. I’m not knocking him. I’ve had him taking up space on two fantasy football teams the last two years planning ahead. The Patriots had to choose between him and Brady. If Brady only plays another year you can make the case they chose poorly.

NorthShore
Member
Free agent

Exactly. And at 40, no matter who you are, your chances of playing only one more year at top level are pretty good. This is where BB went against form, which is weird.

BoSoxJim
Member
Free agent

Times are different now.
I went through all of this before and I’m too tired to talk about it again. But there are reasons why QBs didn’t last this long in the past.

The main ones are: QB rules that protect the QB that weren’t there in the past, different nutrition and training (than in the past) and the will to continue going at this level (after all the wins and money).

Mattsky

We don’t know what happens behind the scene but there is speculation that this came down from Kraft.
