Y Factors 2017: Patriots at Steelers

-by DNOMN8R314

I’m writing this at 10 PM on Saturday because I’m not going to be able to actually write or watch anything Sunday.

Fangoriously, gelatinous, and um, linebacker: For the second straight week, top Patriots linebacker Kyle Van Noy will be inactive, leading to many questions as to who will be responsible for star Pittsburgh running back Le’Veon Bell. New England’s two pure run-stopping linebackers are Elandon Roberts and David Harris (who is injured), but even so, both of them are inside linebackers, while Van Noy plays on the edge. Bell is a talented enough player as it is, but the Patriots will have to come up with a unique solution to limit Bell’s impact.

Talk Britt-ish to my kids!: Kenny Britt’s addition to the Patriots receiving corps has drawn many comparisons to 2016 Michael Floyd. How accurate or inaccurate those comparisons prove to be will be seen when Britt takes the field, which may or may not happen Sunday. If he does play, his presence will provide not just another player for Tom Brady to target but another tall body for the Steelers’ secondary to cover. Brady has played extremely well against Pittsburgh’s defense throughout his career, and the signing of Britt will hopefully benefit the New England passing game even more.

Real estate.: As seems routine when the Patriots play the Steelers, Pittsburgh, this year with home field advantage in the playoffs almost certainly at stake, is crowing. But just because a team opens their mouth against New England does not automatically mean they are predestined for a hubris-driven defeat, particularly in high-stakes or postseason games. Bill Belichick will surely be treating this like it is just another game, one where every player on the team has to do his job. Do that, and anything said beforehand won’t matter.

And now for the BSJ TUMS-O-METER prediction.
Considerations: 1) Playoff seeding is on the line. A win puts them in a position for the #1 seed. A loss may mean a #3 seed. 2) Have we mentioned injuries before? 3) Second shot at hats and t-shirts. 4) What’s up with Tom’s play? 5) The killer B’s.
Prediction: At least 1 case, maybe 2.

1. While the Patriots have already ruled out running back Rex Burkhead (knee) for Sunday’s game against the Bills, they are also expected to be without trusted “passing back” James White for the contest. White was limited all week with an ankle injury he sustained after being tackled on a reception in the first quarter of last Sunday’s win over the Steelers (he had played through the injury). So that would leave Dion Lewis and Mike Gillislee as the top running backs, with White on the cusp of missing his first game due to injury since joining the Patriots as… Read more »

Patriots add starting LT Nate Solder to their injury report. He is questionable with an illness. If Solder doesn’t play, would project to see Cameron Fleming at LT, LaAdrian Waddle at RT, with Cole Croston as swing OT.Report

The only time the Vikings have ever shut out the Packers was in 1971, per ESPN Stats and Info. They won that game 3-0.

Brett Hundley has now thrown 138 passes at home this year without a touchdown. If he can’t throw a TD in the second half, he’ll set the record for most passes without a TD at home in a single season in NFL history, per Elias.

Per Rotoworld: A league source told Profootballtalk that Jack Del Rio is only a “coin flip” to return as Raiders head coach.
Del Rio signed a four-year extension ten months ago. The source told PFT’s Mike Florio that OC Todd Downing is a “near certainty” to lose his job, and Del Rio’s chances of returning likely hinge on how his team performs in Week 16 at Philly and Week 17 at the Chargers. The Raiders will be big underdogs in both games. Report

One final thought for the night before family and whisky beckons me: Harrison is a notorious Pats-hater/baiter. Yet he did briefly mention he would love to play with Tom Brady before he signed with the Bungles. Then he dished out against the Pats in 2015. If we go by the mathematical progression of the timeline, he must really want to play for the Pats now. Ultimately, football is a business and if Belichick thinks that Harrison can be a fit, I’m sure they are talking now. One great side-effect would be to see Steelers fans commit mass suicide when Harrison… Read more »
