Y Factors 2017: Patriots at Bills

-by DNOMN8R314

It didn’t arrive until December, but it’s finally time for a Pats-Bills game. What insanity could occur? Well…

Going down the only road I’ve ever known: In recent season, the Patriots have acquired several former Bills, and a few have played exceptionally well in their former home stadium. Last year’s standout was Chris Hogan, who notably burned Stephon Gilmore for a 53-yard touchdown. Hogan has already been ruled out, but New England has more former Bills in Gilmore, who has emerged as the Patriots’ top cornerback, and running back Mike Gillislee, who has unfortunately slumped and been a healthy scratch, but could see the field again depending on how well injured Patriots are currently recovering. Of course, no list of Buffalo returnees would be complete without Rob Gronkowski, who always seems to put on a show in front of his family.

Urgent emergence, see?: While the obvious stars of the Bills’ offense can be stated by any football fan, Buffalo has several other offensive players who are starting to emerge, perform well in their defined roles, or both. While the Patriots will obviously devote significant efforts to stopping running back LeSean McCoy and quarterback Tyrod Taylor (who, of course, threw the Patriots’ most recent pick-six three years ago), rookie wideout Zay Jones is beginning to show his potential opposite ex-Eagle Jordan Matthews, and Charles Clay has been a longtime AFC East opponent with first Miami then Buffalo.

Mr. Grisgby…: With Nate Ebner lost for the season, new special teams signing Nicholas Grigsby will probably be thrown directly into the fire on New England’s third units. While he probably won’t take all of Ebner’s roles (particularly the punt protector, given Bill Belichick’s 690-word statement on the importance of that position), he should help keep some existing players in their current spots on special teams, allowing the entire unit to function more cohesively. Of course, Grigsby also received Rob Ninkovich’s old No. 50, so…

…and the stats of JIM: This week’s BoSoxJim TUMS-O-METER prediction — things to consider: 1) Still a few key injuries for the Pats, particularly on defense. 2) Tyrod Taylor is starting for the Bills, and combining the defensive injuries along with the Pats’ history of having issues with mobile QBs, it’s a shame the Bills didn’t have their “QB switch” experiment this week. 3) The Bills are still in the running for a wild card playoff spot. 4) The Pats once again need to keep pace with PIT, who play at CIN Monday night. 5) However, a Pats win here will just about sew up the AFC East. PREDICTION: 2 to 2 1/2 bottles.

It’s not luck. Haters use the same argument about the Pats in Super Bowls. They’re winning, and that’s all that matters. Doesn’t matter how close, doesn’t matter how good their opponent is, they’re winning. I think they win next week as well.Report
