Y Factors 2017: Patriots at Raiders

-by DNOMN8R314

As the New England weather finally turns to fall, the Patriots fly south for the winter. Okay, just for the week. (I’d put some remark in Spanish here, but I don’t speak Spanish and I don’t trust Google Translate.)

Height advantage: The Patriots have spent the week in Colorado after their victory over the Broncos to adjust to the altitude, while the Raiders have practiced in Oakland. This could give New England an advantage in conditioning and endurance as they will be more used to the thinner air at a higher altitude. Bill Belichick always emphasizes conditioning, as was demonstrated by Super Bowl LI, so this could be another game where play in the second half determines the game.

Speed kills: Oakland’s secondary has played poorly in 2017, having yet to record an interception, so the Patriots could look to throw even more vertically than normal, sending Brandin Cooks and Phillip Dorsett deep. On defense, New England was notably burned in the opener by the Chiefs, particularly speedster Tyreek Hill, so it’s possible the Raiders try to duplicate that by using Cordarrelle Patterson more often on offense. Of course, the Patriots’ defensive backfield has improved as a unit since September, so such a strategy might not work, but Patterson might be a sneaky player to keep an eye on for Oakland.

Center punch: With David Andrews deactivated due to illness, Ted Karras will be his replacement against a pressure-generating offensive line. While most of that push comes from edge rushers such as Khalil Mack and Mario Edwards Jr., the interior will need to do its job as well in order to give Tom Brady time to find his receivers.

I realize I don’t have all that much to say about this game, so to conclude I’d like to wish everyone a happy Thanksgiving (I’ll do a full Thanksgiving Day post for Thursday), even the annoying advertisers who have been running Christmas commercials for over a month already.

It could just be tendenitis and a consequence of being an older athlete. That’s nothing serious. However, it could also be partially torn and in danger of being completely torn with further stress. Why is everyone so high on Josh Doctson? I really don’t know much about him but he averages 4.8 fantasy points on the season. 96% of fantasy pros prefer him over Ted Ginn but I don’t think he’s outscored Ginn a single week this season and I just read this in Matthew Berry’s Love/Hate column: “We keep waiting for a Josh Doctson breakout game, and I think it has a good chance of happening on Thanksgiving night. The Giants allow the second-most deep passing touchdowns this season, and Doctson leads the Skins in deep targets” Can someone explain why people… Read more »

I just read this from an nfl.com writer that, at least, explains part of the statistical thinking behind his anticipated breakthrough. I don’t know if I agree with it but I may hold on to him on my bench for the week to see if it comes to fruition. I can drop another WR but I ultimately need to decide who I want to start this week. So far, it’s between Ginn Jr, Rishard Matthews, and Kenny Stills (if Hogan makes a miraculous recovery this week, he’d be the guy!)Report

Jim McBride ✔ @globejimmcbride
League source indicates Tom Brady’s Achilles’ injury is not considered serious. Should be back at practice Thursday — Friday at the latest.

In my universe, there is no such thing as an achilles injury that is not serious. I guess you could get spiked back there and it would hurt without doing much damage, but it would still worry me. Richard Sherman is an example I don’t want to see repeated.

Shoulda kept Jacoby!Report

BoSoxJim
Member
Free agent

This isn’t like Sherman’s. He played on an injured Achilles all season long (according to him….he said it bothered him all season). He knew it would eventually give at some point.Report

DinoScapelli

So it gave in ten weeks. Brady is older, and will hit that point just about the Superb Owl.Report

I didn’t realize that all Achilles issues lead to them tearing.
Also, Sherman is a corner. That position puts serious stress on the Achilles on every play.Report

He really grew this pre-season. And now in a new system with the Colts, he’s been really impressive. I’ve seen a lot of his games with the Colts and he could be even better but for a lot of drops from his receivers. I definitely think he could succeed here with a much better offense around him.Report

BoSoxJim

BB gave him up for a WR that was and currently is barely used.
Hardly something you would do with a QB that could lead your franchise.Report

BoSoxJim
Member
Free agent

The Colts do not run the same offense (just ask Dwayne Allen who admitted to having trouble learning the Patriot offense). The Pats are based on timing.
He doesn’t handle pressure well, or the blitz.
He never really fit in the Patriots offense.Report

DinoScapelli
Editor
Free agent

I disagree, based on what I have seen this season. Pressure doesn’t bother him. You just don’t like him because he is not Asian!Report

BoSoxJim
Member
Free agent

Even if he were Asian, he would still be a bad fit for the Patriots offense. Said that the day he was drafted and it still holds true now.Report

BoSoxJim
Member
Free agent

Quick with the ball? His time to throw is 2.90 seconds (27th in the NFL).
He is not suited for a timing offense. His short to intermediate game isn’t very good. Throws a good deep ball.Report

DinoScapelli
Editor
Free agent

I only know what I have seen from watching him in one game, and he looked decisive and quick. Release times have a lot to do with the other aspect of the offense, and his offense sucks.Report

LaFeteMattDog
Member
Free agent

Yeah, but they would tailor the offense to suit his strengths. No one is going to be as quick with the ball as Brady, who has been in this offense for 15 plus years and could execute plays with his eyes closed.Report

BoSoxJim
Member
Free agent

Why would they do that? His strengths aren’t all that good. He can run some and he can chuck it deep.
The Pats would have to change their entire philosophy (similar to Carolina or Seattle)…not just a couple tweaks.Report

I have absolutely no clue. He was signed off a practice squad. I have no idea who he is, or how he fits in their system. If it’s Best Player, Brady should win, but if it’s Player who made the biggest difference in his team’s success, Wentz is in the hunt, along with Alvin Kamara and Case Keenum, among others.
In my opinion, before he went down, Deshaun Watson was the MVP.Report

I think you are grossly underestimating Brady’s importance to the Patriots.
Marshon Lattimore is ahead of Kamara IMO as far as important Saints are concerned (both behind Brees).

No sir, I am not underestimating Brady’s importance. He is the best QB in the league, and that’s the most important position on the field. I only included Wentz et al under the condition that they have had a more obvious impact on their teams’ newfound success than Brady, who we all expect to lead the Pats to the AFC Championship Game at least. The Pats are great every year, so it doesn’t catch anyone’s attention when they are again this year. They wouldn’t be 2-8 without Tom, as they showed the one year they didn’t have him. The MVP hasn’t been about which player has led to newfound success of a team.

Carson Wentz winning the MVP award would be a travesty. 4th in QB rating, 11th in yards, 30th in completion percentage, 1st in touchdowns, 10th in Interceptions, 9th in YPA, 5th in ANYA. C.J. Beathard played well in the Niners’ last game. Gets to continue. Sends a solid message to the locker room that you get rewarded for good play. Gotta figure an entry point for Jimmy G is coming.

They don’t want to have Jimmy G’s first start with the 49ers to be against a desperate Seahawk team.Report

Makes sense. They let Freeney go and they did like his potential.Report

Someone may pick him up for a playoff run. He can still get after the passer.Report
