Y Factors 2017: Patriots at Broncos

-by DNOMN8R314

It’s another prime time game for the Patriots, as they travel to regular foe Denver on Sunday Night Football. On the one hand, New England has to travel to Mile High Stadium and play in high altitudes; on the other hand, they don’t have to listen to the SNF theme song. Lucky them.

Can’t wait to see you (again): In the two weeks since their last game, the Patriots have added Brian Hoyer, Ricky Jean Francois, and Martellus Bennett to the roster. Bill Belichick usually gives new Patriots a couple weeks as a healthy scratch in order to learn the playbook, meaning Jean Francois probably won’t play. Hoyer is of course the new backup, while Bennett was with the team last year and, according to Mike Reiss, has a chance of playing against the Broncos. While the impact of Bennett’s return has been discussed, I am more curious to see what the addition of Jean Francois has on the rotation in the front seven. With Shea McClellin officially sidelined for the season, I think it is more likely that Kyle Van Noy will continue to play off the line, and possibly Adam Butler will play more snaps on the edge of the line. Either way, this week and the games following with give a sense of where the new Patriots will make their impact.

They misunderestimated me: Denver’s 3-5 record may look unthreatening, especially with Brock Osweiler at quarterback, but the Broncos still have talent. And most of that talent was around for the Broncos’ 2015 victories over New England. Despite lower statistics, wide receivers Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders can always burn a defense, and running back C.J. Anderson is a threat on the ground. Denver still also boasts a strong pass defense, marked by top-tier cornerback trio Aqib Talib, Chris Harris Jr., and Bradley Roby. With the Patriots missing key players on both sides of the ball, they will have to continue to step up in key spots (and NOT go in assuming a win) in order to leave Denver with a victory.

The boys are back in town: Among the players expected to return to the field Sunday for New England are cornerbacks Stephon Gilmore and Eric Rowe, who (as we all know) struggled mightily early in the season, began to stride towards better play, then got hurt. While Johnson Bademosi and Jonathan Jones filled in well during their absence, and will likely see some snaps on defense for the rest of the season, Gilmore and Rowe have much higher ceilings. Against an offense with wide receivers who are skilled at going deep, led by a quarterback whose strength is throwing deep, they will need to play up to their expectations to keep Denver off the board and keep New England in the win column.

And a new feature: the BoSoxJim Tums Meter: one full bottle, with an extra bottle in reserve. The matchup looks good on paper, but the Broncos always play New England tough, especially in Denver. This should be a fun one.

Good question….. We had lots of the larvae in the yard a few weeks ago. Not sure why you are not seeing them this year….

Was it particularly hot this summer?

cqrun
Member
Free agent

Not sure. A hot summer last year could reduce the LB populations by reducing the populations of their preferred prey. That would reduce the number of adults present to seed this year’s generation. Rain at the wrong time during development could also reduce their populations.

At least the Jets are in the pit of a rebuild. The Fins are the worst of both worlds right now. Lousy and still need to be blown up.

I was just reading Hugo’s comment below. I never knew that Collinsworth owned PFF. haha

hugowasmyhomeboy
Member

Him buying PFF was the impetus for them making their real stats private (much to the dismay of our long lost friend Clark!)

hugowasmyhomeboy
Member
Free agent

They still sell those old stats to the media. Presumably expensive. They also got into college football and are trying to sell the stats to colleges.

hugowasmyhomeboy
Member
Free agent

I figure the point is that NFL teams can afford to internally produce analytics – colleges can’t. So they can make money off the colleges.
Also I’m pretty sure the legwork for PFF is done basically for free. The ppl who chart games for them are random ordinary fans. I think one of our fellow bruhs could elaborate on that. The overhead of the operation can’t be much I’d think, so its not like they have to make a ton of money to get even.

In Brady and Gronk, do the Patriots not have the two guys who separate themselves most clearly from the rest of the league at their positions?

Julio Jones?

It’s funny. I heard someone saying that New England doesn’t have any players that could start on the Steelers.

Brady, Gronk, Cooks, McCourty, Gilmore, Butler just to start.

Gruden on his worst in the booth is still way better than Collinsworth

hugowasmyhomeboy
Member

I love Gruden! His enthusiasm is infectious,
Collinsworth has been bland in the past but the last year or two he’s been better. I think buying PFF and getting into that has to do with it. He prepares very specific observations and some of them are interesting.

Jonc77

he is good. but like on the the TD where Cam changed the play and threw it out to WR. Gruden said that it was all Cam.

This one is obviously their version of DMONSTRATIVE:

Still mad that TB12 got robbed of 2 TD passes . Should have had at least 5 last night….possibly 6 if Harris didn’t hook Cooks’ arm (although I’m having a brain fart and can’t remember if that drive ended in a TD pass anyway….I’ll look it up).

Yes, I’m greedy.

OK, the drive with the deep pass to Cooks where Harris hooked his arm ended up with a TD pass to White.

Patrick Chung lined up at safety on just 6.7% of his snaps this season, while he played at CB on 57.7% of his snaps.

Seems like it would be more useful to say it that way
