Ranking the 2017 Roster at the Bye

-by DNOMN8R314

Technically, it’s now “after” the bye, but the delay in writing has already come with a change to the roster. Dont’a Hightower has officially been placed on IR and Ricky Jean Francois has been signed, while Shea McClellin (who was expected to return from IR) will not be activated and so will not be on this list.

Here’s my ranking of the 53-man roster at the midpoint of the season. Ranking is based on talent, player importance, and individual importance, which makes this construction sound a lot more statistically thought-out than it is.

And don’t forget that just because I rank a player low doesn’t mean I think he has no importance to the team.

53. Geneo Grissom, DE: Grissom has remained a Patriot due to versatility, special teams value, and lack of depth on the defensive line, but he has been a healthy scratch in recent weeks.

52. Cameron Fleming, T: Like Grissom, Fleming has been a regular inactive, passed on the depth chart by LaAdrian Waddle.

51. Ted Karras, G: The second-year guard has not seen any offensive snaps, only seeing the field on special teams, but is a solid backup with growth potential.

50. Cole Croston, T: Another backup, Croston beat out sixth-round pick Conor McDermott for the final spot on the offensive line and is in his “redshirt” season.

49. Brandon Bolden, RB: After a brief “purge” at the final cuts, Bolden has returned to the roster as a regular special teamer, but has not seen offensive snaps as the fifth running back.

48. Trevor Reilly, LB: Activated to the roster after Harvey Langi’s car accident, Reilly’s usage (ST-heavy, defensive backup) resembles that of…

47. Marquis Flowers, LB: Flowers stepped in after his acquisition as a regular on special teams and has seen scattered snaps at linebacker.

46. Jordan Richards, S: Splitting his minimal time on defense between safety and linebacker, Richards could see an increase in snaps with Hightower’s deactivation and McClellin not returning.

45. Dwayne Allen, TE: Halfway through the season, Allen’s role has become “designated blocker” as he has yet to record a catch this year.

44. Phillip Dorsett, WR: Dorsett has not had many opportunities on offense to reach his high ceiling, but with Chris Hogan expected to miss time, he’ll have a chance to show why he was a first-round selection.

43. Brian Hoyer, QB: Back on the squad where he started his career, Hoyer is now the veteran backup, a role the Patriots have not had in recent years as they have developed young quarterbacks behind Tom Brady.

42. Ricky Jean Francois, DT: The newest Patriot, veteran DL Jean Francois is expected to fill in for the injured Malcom Brown.

41. Ryan Allen, P: While Allen has had a down season by most statistical standards, he has still been a steady leg and reliable holder.

40. Joe Cardona, LS: As unnoticed on the field as ever, Cardona continues to be a solid example of a long snapper, doing his job mistake-free.

39. Brandon King, LB: I fully expect King to receive a contract extension this year, as the undrafted safety-linebacker hybrid has been stellar in multiple roles on coverage units

38. Nate Ebner, S: At the midpoint of the year, Ebner is once again leading the Patriots in special teams tackles, a stat in which he paced the league in 2016.

37. Jacob Hollister, TE: Although he has only caught three passes so far this year, Hollister is the other player who could be in line for a larger role with Hogan’s injury, especially with Allen’s unproductivity in the passing game.

36. Cassius Marsh, DE: While Marsh has been criticized for lack of contain against the run, the ex-Seahawk has been fine in pass rush and pursuit of the quarterback, and has blocked a field goal.

35. Adam Butler, DT: Thus far the most productive Patriots UDFA of 2017, Butler has quickly worked his way into the DL rotation, recording one sack so far.

34. Jonathan Jones, CB: Jones has developed from a solid rookie season into a good cornerback, filling in well during Stephon Gilmore and Eric Rowe’s injuries, and very good gunner.

33. Eric Rowe, CB: Rowe had a poor start to the season (as did pretty much every defender) and has been injured, but the cornerback has a high ceiling and is in position to step into the #2 role if Malcolm Butler leaves next year.

32. Mike Gillislee, RB: After a strong start, Gillislee has not found the end zone since Week 2, but is still a strong runner with a powerful style and still leads the team in rushing yards this year.

31. Rex Burkhead, RB: I really want Burkhead to see the field more, as he is not only a versatile back but a productive player both on the ground and through the air.

30. David Harris, LB: Harris played single-digit snaps for most of the season, but was thrust into the rotation after Hightower’s injury and has provided a spark in the middle of the defense.

29. Johnson Bademosi, CB: Winner of the 2017 “Where Did He Come From?” award, Bademosi entered the starting lineup after Gilmore and Rowe went down and played solidly opposite Butler.

28. Elandon Roberts, LB: At this point, Roberts’ role is established as a very good run-stopping linebacker who is not great against the pass; keep him in that role and he will be very valuable this year.

27. James Develin, FB: An under-noticed player at an oft-forgotten position, Develin is still his bruising self opening holes for running backs, and can be a sneaky option as a pass catcher too.

26. LaAdrian Waddle, T: After a year as a regular inactive, Waddle has leapt into the third tackle role and has filled in well for the injured Marcus Cannon in recent weeks.

25. Alan Branch, DT: A poor start to the season led to a healthy scratch, but Branch has stepped back into the rotation as a run-stuffing defensive tackle.

24. Lawrence Guy, DT: Signed to a four-year deal this offseason, Guy has been a regular on the line at both defensive tackle and end.

23. Matthew Slater, WR: The regular All-Pro gunner continues to regularly All-Pro opposing returners, as Slater continues to lead on the field and in the locker room.

22. Stephen Gostkowski, K: Two missed field goals last week have left a sour taste, but Gostkowski has still been strong on scoring kicks and automatic on kickoffs.

21. Patrick Chung, S: Chung is still a solid strong safety; although his coverage has gone down a bit, his skill set allows New England to operate their three-safety “big nickel” package with successful frequency.

20. Deatrich Wise Jr., DE: The only drafted rookie on the 53-man roster, Wise has established himself as the Patriots’ #2 defensive end along with fellow Razorback Trey Flowers, tied for the team lead with 13 QB hits.

19. Joe Thuney, G: Thuney has made strides in his second year, continuing to be a stalwart at left guard and a part of the team’s improvement on the interior line.

18. Duron Harmon, S: Signed to a four-year extension, Harmon is the third of New England’s regular three-safety package, a true free safety with a knack for interceptions at key moments.

17. Kyle Van Noy, LB: Van Noy has grown from versatile role player to versatile regular, receiving a new contract and providing plays all over the defensive front seven.

16. Stephon Gilmore, CB: Despite a weak start to the season, Gilmore was beginning to click in the defense before his concussion, and returns to expectations just as high as at his signing.

15. Danny Amendola, WR: With Julian Edelman lost for the season, Amendola has been the pure possession receiver this season and has continued to make clutch catches.

14. David Andrews, C: The undrafted center has also been instrumental in improving interior line play, earning a contract extension and continuing to block solidly.

13. Dion Lewis, RB: Lewis has finally returned to the ultra-elusive back he was at the start of 2015 and is seeing more and more time on offense, providing a boost to the team’s running game.

12. James White, RB: While not used often as a rusher, White has become one of the best pass-catching backs in the league, having been brought to the spotlight by his Super Bowl heroics.

11. Marcus Cannon, T: Cannon’s season has not been as strong as last year’s, at least partly because of an injured ankle, but the right tackle is still an important part of the offensive line’s stability going forward.

10. Chris Hogan, WR: In his second year in New England, Hogan has become a trusted target for Brady, especially in the red zone, with the versatility to be targeted in all areas of the field.

9. Malcom Brown, DT: The Patriots’ most recent first-round pick, Brown has flourished in his third season, becoming the best defensive tackle on the team.

8. Brandin Cooks, WR: The explosive receiver acquired from New Orleans has set a career-best pace, confirming his status as a strong vertical threat.

7. Nate Solder, T: Solder’s contract season has been made difficult by his son’s medical issues and external criticism, but he is still rightly trusted with Brady’s blind side protection.

6. Malcolm Butler, CB: After rumors of offseason departure, Butler has stepped up as the Patriots’ best cornerback, putting forth strong showings to help stabilize the secondary after a rough beginning to 2017.

5. Shaq Mason, G: Entering the league in 2015 as a mauling run blocker, Mason has turned into a fully-faceted, top-quality right guard.

4. Trey Flowers, DE: Though his supporting cast on the line is not as strong, Flowers continues to grow and emerge as the Patriots’ best pass rusher.

3. Devin McCourty, S: McCourty continues to show his versatility and importance to the team, taking on different coverage roles so that the secondary can finally blossom.

2. Rob Gronkowski, TE: After missing most of last season with injuries, Gronk is once again GRONK, his size and hands making him a nearly uncoverable target, and his strength flattening attempted tacklers.

1. Tom Brady, QB: The streak is on to I-don’t-know-how-many seasons since Brady’s decline was proclaimed as inevitable, as the GOAT continues to improve and play at an astronomical level.

Officially, no. It was today. The Red Sox had their Veterans Run for Home event tonight at Fenway, despite the 20 degree temperatures. I didn’t have the day off, so I blundered into the area and got caught in gridlock for a little while before totally lucking out and finding a parking spot and meeting my wife at Boston Beer Works as planned. (Lots were charging $20 right next to where I parked for free.)

At any rate, it was a raucous celebration in honor of our veterans in
Boston tonight.Report

Veterans Day is always officially on 11/11. It goes back to the end of WW1. It ended on 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. The next year the holiday was created for 11/11. It is great that the Red Sox do that but just because they do it on the 10th it doesn’t change the official holiday.Report

My guess is if he got claimed by a crappy team he would have opted for the surgery but now that he has a shot at a ring he’ll try to play through. Doesn’t make him look good and GB probably should be able to recoup whatever money he’s still owed if he just quit on them. It’s a good one for the conspiracy theorists that are going to say the Pats planned this all along.Report

Shaggy

I doubt he’s actually going to sue but even if he does, it has to do with each owner having a say over Goodell’s compensation, rather than only a committee of 7 or 8 owners. Kraft happens to be on committee by the way. The Elliot case has nothing to do with a possible lawsuit. At least not directly. Looks to me that a torn rotator cuff is primarily a pain management situation for a TE. If he were a QB, Bennett would be done. As it stands, reaching above his shoulder is going to hurt and over his head might not be possible. But with tons of drugs and injections, should he be able to make regular catches and blocks? Probably.Report

Marty has #88 again. How long before a conspiracy theory person says that the Pats didn’t assign #88 all year because they knew he was coming back.Report

If Marty B’s instagram posts are true, his shoulder is hosed, and he’ll probably be pretty worthless on the field. I say we sign Scott Chandler. <3Report

Better off signing Josh BoyceReport

BoSoxJim

It wasn’t his hands that was the problem. It was his route running. He wasn’t where TB12 wanted him, when he wanted him.Report

Mike Reiss
It would be a quick turnaround, and no decision made at this point, but not out of the realm of possibility Martellus Bennett plays Sunday night. He is planning to travel to Denver.

Jdog Lemon Head

If he really wants to retire at the end of year, he should play banged up and try to get another ring.Report

Think Marty and BB already talked about that. That’s why he was at practice today.
It’s probably something he could play through as long as he feels he has something to play for.Report
