Y Factors 2017: Patriots at Jets

-by DNOMN8R314

While it is Jets week, and the Jets have an overall weak roster, they are still 3-2 and have a tendency to play New England close. Do not underestimate them. (Of course, you may say I am overestimating them, and you may well be right, but I will treat every opponent as a team with the potential to win the game.)

Safety first: What is it with the Jets and having top defensive prospects fall to them at the sixth overall pick? Two seasons ago, it was Leonard Williams, while in 2017, New York snapped up safety Jamal Adams with their first-rounder, and he by all accounts looks like a budding star. The Jets have paired him with second-round safety Marcus Maye, and they appear to be growing into a solid safety tandem. While they are still rookies, they are players who can slow a potent passing attack if not treated as threats. You can bet that with 10 days to prepare, the Patriots – especially Tom Brady – will be looking for weaknesses in the rookies’ game that their air game can exploit.

Like he said, safety first: Similarly, while the Jets’ receiving corps is weakened with the loss of Quincy Enunwa to injury, New York has stemmed their weakness with the addition of Jermaine Kearse, the development of tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins, and capable quarterback play from Josh McCown. While New England seemed to make strides forward on defense on short notice last Thursday night, slips in play can still be exploited, leading to a long afternoon. Particularly, it will be key for safeties Devin McCourty, Patrick Chung, and Duron Harmon to keep any threat of a Jets passing game from gaining ground, as while one might say that New York hardly has the wepunz to win through the air, they have already won three. With Stephon Gilmore and Eric Rowe ruled out, strong safety play becomes even more important.

A full dollar’s worth: Through five weeks, Patriots opponents have scored nearly twice as many fourth-quarter points as New England has. This problem was particularly noticeable against Tampa Bay, as the Patriots’ pass defense suddenly began hemorrhaging yards, keeping the Buccaneers in the game until the final play. This, bluntly, is going to have to stop if New England wants to win. Pats fans are familiar with big leads disappearing in the fourth quarter (cough cough 28-3 cough), and no one following those in Foxboro – and definitely no one in Foxboro – wants to be on the other side of a game like that. I fully expect Bill Belichick and Matt Patricia, along with the defense’s leaders, to be aware of this problem and to emphasize playing a full 60-minute game. It may be a cliché – and I hate clichés as much as Hedley Lamarr – but it’s a cliché because it is true.

After the Chiefs game I went to Miracle Max and told him that it would take a miracle for the Pats defense to be a championship-level defense. He said he would work on it.
OK, it’s been 6 games and the defense is still not a championship-level defense. So I went back to Max and asked him what was up.

This was his response
