Pats-Bucs All-22: Stephon Gilmore Edition

-by memokerobi

If you spend some time reading the comments, you probably know that I am a believer in Stephon Gilmore’s coverage skills. I thought after an abysmal secondary performance against the Panthers in which Gilmore took the majority of criticism, it makes sense to focus on Gilmore’s effort in limiting Mike Evans to 5 catches for 49 yards. Unfortunately, there are no diagrams this week as I’m focusing on a 1-v-1 matchup and not run/pass/coverage schemes.

It seemed like the Bucs’ game plan was to get the ball to DeSean Jackson and Cameron Brate who were mainly covered by Malcolm Butler and Patrick Chung. They lined up Evans mainly on one side of the field alone and had Jameis Winston work with half-field reads with Jackson, Brate and Adam Humphries. So, although I am happy with Gilmore’s bounce-back game, I can’t say that he singlehandedly ruined the Bucs’ game plan by shutting down Evans. The Pats on the other hand deployed a simple game plan, playing mostly zone on early downs, man on third down and some Cover 2 prevent late game. Gilmore did his job well without any major breakdown. He did a nice job of staying with Evans in man coverage, especially on third down and sometimes without safety help.

Side note: Chung did an amazing job of covering Brate while Jackson beat Butler regularly and could have had even better numbers if not for Winston.

Now let’s look at some plays to see how Gilmore did covering Evans and compare those plays to similar plays where other defenders covered Evans.

1st Quarter, 1st & 10, TB 36, 10:32 left

If you watch this game closely you’ll realize that Gilmore didn’t allow a catch in man coverage. All of Evans’ catches in Gilmore’s vicinity came against Cover 3 with out and curl routes. The Pats are playing Cover 3 here (look at the corners shuffle technique with their backs facing the sideline, a Nick Saban favorite in Cover 3) and Gilmore’s responsibility is the deep third of the field. Evans is running an out route here and covering such a rout as an outside corner in Cover 3 is a tough assignment as your primary responsibility is not getting beat deep. It is even more difficult here because it’s play action and Kyle Van Noy (who is the curl/flat defender) is drawn in to defend the run and has no chance of getting underneath Evans’ route.

Here’s a play from the previous week when Evans is running a similar route and the Giants are showing a Cover 4. Janoris Jenkins’ responsibility is similar to Gilmore’s as he is covering the deep fourth of the field. He makes a good play on the ball here cutting Evans’ route. But it would be unfair to expect the same kind of play from Gilmore here. First, look at how Jenkins is playing with almost a 10-yard cushion, and can see the play develop. When Evans breaks outside, he explodes out of his backpedal and bats the ball down at the catch point. Gilmore, on the other hand, is running side by side with Evans and they are facing the end zone. Evans makes a 90-degree break to the outside. To match this route, Gilmore has to make almost a 270-degree turn, and still is in position to make a play on the ball and is only a step behind. This is a much tougher play than the one Jenkins makes and the athleticism Gilmore showed in his change of direction and burst impressed me here. I checked his combine numbers and found out his 3-cone was a stunning 6.61 seconds. That’s freakish for a guy his size.

4th Quarter, 2nd & 3, TB 48, 3:37 left

Evans is running a slant here and Humphries is running an out route. This play is towards the end of the game and the Bucs need to conserve the time. So probably the only read is Humphries here to go out of bounds and stop the time and Evans’ slant is there to create a rub to get Humphries open. I still wanted to look at this play to highlight Gilmore’s technique covering the slant. He stays square until Evans breaks inside and does a very good job in matching his inside break. Evans has a step on him here but Gilmore is trailing him with a 2-yard cushion and therefore is in a position to make a play on the ball with his left arm over the outside shoulder of Evans if it is thrown.

Chicago’s Kyle Fuller is also covering a slant here from Evans. However, he fails to stay square, opens his hips towards the sidelines for just a moment, and loses his ground to Evans. Just like Gilmore, he is only a step behind Evans. But unlike Gilmore, Fuller is not in a good position to make a play on the ball because he is right behind Evans and is running on the same route as him, trailing his steps. To put it another way, Gilmore can see the side of Evan’s face and body while all Fuller sees is his back. So, when the ball is thrown at Fuller, he has no realistic chance of making a play on it and Evans gains around 5 yards after making the catch. Gilmore shows good technique here and if the ball is thrown to Evans, he can make a play on the ball or can bring down Evans quickly without surrendering much YAC.

The two gifs below are a similar example to the play I looked at above. Gilmore playing with good leverage while the Bears defender is not in a good position to make a play to defend the pass.

This game was a good step in getting things back on track for Gilmore and the Pats defense and hopefully they will be able to continue their upward trend vs the Jets.

The Pats should score today, maybe not light up the scoreboard but you can move the ball on the Jets and they don’t have an edge rushing presence. This one comes down to whether or not the Pats can play their size and stop the Jets from sustaining 12 play drives by running the ball.Report

10. A Saturday ride from Boston to East Rutherford, New Jersey, leaves time for plenty of thoughts, and here’s one as it relates to Sunday’s game between the Patriots (3-2) and Jets (3-2): Wasn’t this supposed to be a matchup of a potential 16-0 team against a possible 0-16 team? In retrospect, many in the media badly missed the mark on both clubs. For the Patriots, it’s been a good reminder of how offseason headlines of loading up personnel-wise mean little, and for the Jets — who still might crash back to earth in time — it’s a reflection of… Read more »

2. Patriots linebacker Shea McClellin is eligible to begin practicing this week after opening the year on injured reserve (presumably with a concussion). McClellin has been around the team, participating in meetings, and those close to him relay that he has been feeling much better. So he could be on the cusp of a return to the practice field. Meanwhile, my sense is that receiver Malcolm Mitchell, who was placed on IR on Sept. 7 (knee), is not close to being a consideration to begin practicing at this point, if at all this year. Finally, defensive tackle Vincent Valentine (knee),… Read more »

The SFTB (Straight From The Barrel) is “cask strength” so it comes in at around 120-140 proof, so it has some heat on it (nothing that a little water or ice cube won’t temper) but it is ridiculously flavorful and quite smooth considering it’s roughly 15-25% more alcohol by volume.Report
