Y Factors 2017: Patriots vs. Panthers

-by DNOMN8R314

Let’s not have a home game that depresses the fans, shall we?

Ducks in a Rowe: The Panthers have two tall outside receivers in Kelvin Benjamin and Devin Funchess. With Stephon Gilmore as the locked-in #1 cornerback, this will probably be a game where the Patriots can match up better in the secondary with Eric Rowe as the #2 and Malcolm Butler entering as the third CB. That said, Butler looked much better against Houston than he did in the preseason and first two weeks, and Rowe was inactive last week due to injury. That said, no matter what Bill Belichick and Matt Patricia decide to do regarding secondary personnel, it is inevitable that we fans will complain about it. (Also I accidentally typed an F instead of a D the first time I typed this paragraph title.)

Mobile gas: What Deshaun Watson did last Sunday, Cam Newton did to New England in 2013. Last week’s strategy of containment instead of pressure against a weak offensive line did not work; whether that was due to an incorrect strategy or terrible execution (or both) can be debated. But although Newton has had a sub-par start to his season, he is still capable of terrorizing the New England defense if they continue to repeat errors. What will the Patriots’ tactics be to stop Newton? Will they be able to execute properly? Only Sunday will tell.

Wake me up when September ends: (which technically it already has) Belichick treats the first four weeks of the season as an extension of the preseason, as we know but invariably forget when things go wrong. (I expect he will include next week in there as well since New England plays Thursday.) Even if the Patriots lay another egg against Carolina, we are approaching that time of the season when Belichick and the team are more fully adjusted to the Foxboro system and, simply, play better football. But, of course, football is ripe for overreactions. See you on Overreaction Monday.

Have Mike Evans coming up Thursday night. Tough time not to have one of your bigger corners in Rowe, even if he wasn’t 100% or playing particularly well.Report

I think DHT needs to stay at LB. Not any specific reason other than I think the defense needs him there in the middle keeping things more organized rather than trying to be an edge guyReport

As much as it hurts, it is still 2-2 and we have to move on. Let’s hope the same finish we had the last time we started the season with 2-2.Report

I’ll repeat what I said during the game… I think its time for the defense to just play straight man coverage… each CB takes a man and shadows him all game… safeties play help over the top… as simple as possible… just win matchupsReport

Once Gilmore gets the communication down, he’ll be fine. He’s been excellent in coverage, however, those blown assignments have cost the Patriots points. On the other hand, there is no reason to resign Butler after this season. His coverage has been lackluster (some plays perfect, but against tall receivers he is absolutely decimated).Report

lets also not forget that the team is playing without Nink, Chris Long (who had that high motor and veteran presence), mclellin, and logan ryan… all of those guys were strong complementary pieces in the defense last year… while only ryan is missing from the secondary, i still think the team as a whole doesn’t seem to have it yetReport

I understand the lack of a pass rush or issues setting the edge. I understand the difficulties with covering RB’s out of the backfield. They lack personnel at those skill sets. I don’t understand the lack of communication in the secondary at all.Report
