Pats-Texans All-22: Is there hope for the defense?

-by memokerobi

I’m back with the second installment in this series after a week off. I didn’t have time to create GIFs and diagram plays for the Saints game so my apologies for that. I watched every snap of this game and my initial plan was to focus on the Pats offense this time, but after I watched Bill Belichick break down offensive plays, I decided to go with defense. You must watch the Belichick Breakdown because I think it is the best one ever.

Now back to Memo’s Breakdown.

This will probably end up being a very long article. I looked at critical plays that extended Houston drives that ended with a FG or a TD. I wanted to see if the mistakes by the Pats D were fixable issues or if they were outright getting outplayed and losing one-on-one battles. The answer was surprisingly neither. I didn’t realize how good of a game Deshaun Watson played when I watched it live. Sure, the Pats defense didn’t play an amazing game, but they didn’t look that bad when I watched them again. Watson did an amazing job of creating plays and we’ll see a couple below. I think although the defense has looked terrible to begin the year, we are seeing the worst right now and it will get better. The two main reasons why I think so:

  1. Most of the breakdowns in the passing game seem to be happening when the Pats are playing zone. There is a good chance that they’ll be able to fix this with more practices and game but I hope they do it sooner than later. Man coverage seemed to be really solid both by Stephon Gilmore and Malcolm Butler and it was Jonathan Jones who allowed three critical plays in man coverage (1 TD + 2 catches allowed on third down). Hopefully the return of Eric Rowe will help.
  2. The pass rush is getting there. I saw Deatrich Wise, Trey Flowers, Cassius Marsh, Lawrence Guy, and Malcom Brown in the backfield at least once on passing plays. The pass rush seems to be effective and they looked good in the previous games as well. A good pass rush would help a lot for a struggling defense. Finishing needs work though; they are letting the QBs escape quite often.

With my thoughts out of the way, let’s get to the five plays to examine.

2nd quarter, 3rd & 5, Houston 40, 9:40 left

(GIF link)

The Patriots are playing Cover 1 (man coverage with single high safety) with Duron Harmon as the single safety up top. The CBs are matched up with the receivers, Patrick Chung has TE Ryan Griffin, and Devin McCourty and Kyle Van Noy are responsible for the RB and Watson depending on how the play develops (I put Van Noy playing QB spy on the diagram). The Texans are running the identical route combo on both sides of the field with the inside receiver running a go route and the outside receiver running an out route. Watson’s first read seems to be Bruce Ellington running the out vs Jones. With his first read covered well, he proceeds to the second read which is Griffin vs Chung down the field. Chung played this well and with both reads unavailable and the RB covered on the check down, Watson decides to run for it with the pocket collapsing. Adam Butler falling here is critical as it allows for a lane for Watson to escape the pocket. Watson takes off and does a great job of attacking McCourty’s outside shoulder then cutting it back for the extra yard to get the first down. It is a very good play by Watson here to get the first down and it eventually leads to three points for the Texans.

2nd quarter, 3rd & 5, Houston 21, 1:56 left

(GIF link)

This drive by the Texans didn’t end with points but it was a critical first down here because it significantly decreased the chances of a Patriots score before the half to set up the “double-score.” This is a breakdown in the Pats defense and although I am not 100% certain where the breakdown occurred, here’s my best interpretation. The Patriots seem to be playing Cover 2 here with Flowers also dropping down to spy Watson (forgot to draw this on the diagram). D-Mac and Harmon are the deep safeties and Elandon Roberts and Jones seem to be playing the hook zones with Van Noy covering the seam. The Texans have TE Stephen Anderson running a post with Van Noy and then Chung picking him up and the outside receiver runs a hitch which is covered by Jones. Griffin is running a simple flat route here which should be easily picked up by the curl/flat defender in Cover 2, Gilmore in this case. However, Gilmore plays it too deep and moves towards the middle of the field, leaving Griffin wide open for a first down. It looks to be a mistake by Gilmore with Jones later talking to him and pointing to him like “It’s supposed to be your responsibility,” then pats him on the bum “Don’t worry about it.” Easy first down for the Texans.

3rd quarter, 2nd & 22, Houston 34, 9:53

(GIF link)

The Texans drive seems to be dead at this point and the Pats are playing a soft coverage here to prevent a third-and-short or a first down. It looks to be man coverage vs the outside receivers by Jones and Butler as both trail their man until the end of the play. All the defenders between Jones and Butler are playing zone with two hook and two curl/flat defenders. Harmon is the single high safety as usual. The Pats do a good job of covering all the options and it looks like the only one Watson can go to is DeAndre Hopkins on the hitch for a 7-8 yard max gain. Instead, Watson looks to escape the pocket through the lane that Guy vacated, but with Guy pulling a spin move he is forced to move to his left. It is now a scramble drill at this point and usually when a QB scrambles to one side he also makes a throw to that side. The Pats’ zone defenders start clogging the right side of the field and leave the numbers on the left (Watson’s right) uncovered. Griffin who is running an out route works down the field and is open. Watson makes the throw from the numbers to outside the numbers on the opposite side of the field with Guy in his face. This is just an incredible play by Watson for the first down and I’m not even sure if this is his best play of the day. Texans score a TD on this drive.

4th quarter, 2nd & 7, Houston 46, 13:48 left

(GIF link)

This is one of the two big plays by RB D’Onta Foreman. Pats are in man coverage against the Texans trips formation to the right. Gilmore, Butler, and Jones are responsible for the receivers; McCourty has Griffin; and Harmon is up top. Roberts is blitzing here and that leaves Van Noy to cover Foreman. Pats CBs do a good job of covering the receivers, Jones takes Hopkins out of the play with excellent press coverage. Recognizing the blitz by Roberts, Watson does a good job of identifying that Van Noy, who is lined up between the hashes, is covering Foreman, who is lined up outside the hashes and is running a route to the flat. Foreman is open on the flat and Watson makes the throw. This should be a simple play that should result in a max 5-6 yard gain. But instead of playing the receiver Van Noy decides to play the ball. He is playing catch-up here and he should know that he is not in a good position to play the ball, and even if he is the risk is too big to take the risk. He misses the ball and completely takes himself out of the play. With all other defenders on the other side of the field it is a 34-yard gain by Foreman.

4th quarter, 1st & 20, Houston 23, 5:26 left

(GIF link #1)
(GIF link #2)

There isn’t much need for words on this one. Pats do a good job of covering the WRs in man coverage. There is a holding call on Jones but all I see is another great LOS battle with Hopkins that takes the WR out of the play. Roberts and Flowers look like they are responsible for the RB and the QB depending on how the play goes like McCourty and KVN in the first play. Seeing Watson scramble, Flowers moves towards him leaving Foreman uncovered for a 31 yard gain. I also put the end zone view on this one so you can see the incredible play of Watson better. Enjoy.

The heir to Brady.
Been waiting almost 2 years to see this kid play and he is the real deal and he will fall to the Patriots because he made a mistake in 2015.

Brady’s heir will not be drafted. He will forego college to get a job loading trucks to help out his sick mom. On a whim, he’ll stand outside a team stadium in July holding a sign saying “Will throw footballs for food.” Some brash young offensive coordinator will hire him to scrub toilets and will be amazed when he comes in early throwing perfect spirals in trash cans before the sun comes up. He will give him a chance to run the scout team and the kid will not be denied. He will beat out the back-up and when the… Read more »

Their offense is a hot mess. Glennon is a turnover machine, but they have no skill players for a QB to throw to. I just don’t see any upside to throwing Trubisky in there now, when he has 0% chance to succeed and will be crushed by the pourous O-line.Report

hugowasmyhomeboy

I think they might be better with Trubisky for the reasons that the crew touched on. He’s more mobile, and their only asset is their running backs so you could move the pocket more and focus on quick throws.
But Trubisky’s development is the first priority, if you think its not best for him you don’t do it.Report

On a selfish note, it would be great if the opposing defense actually respected the Bears’ QB so that Howard doesn’t have to run into 9-10 man boxes.

Maybe we can sacrifice Allen in order to take him out so that Gronk’s knees will be safe.Report

That could work. Not sure of who else we could sacrifice.Report

Not sports related, but here’s some cool news. They finalized the date that my late grandfather will posthumously receive a US Congressional Gold Medal. The ceremony will be at the US Capitol next month. Pretty cool stuff. I’ll fly to DC to witness the ceremony. Just sucks that I’ll be in DC for vacation the weekend before, fly home and arrive just after the Pats/Falcons game started, then have to fly back to DC 2 days later. Wouldn’t be worth it to do a change ticket, and pay 2 days extra for hotel (hotels are super expensive in DC, and… Read more »

That’s awesome, Jdog! Very happy for you and your family.

We’ll get Sami to do something so they have to delay the start of the game for an hour or two. 🙂Report

To me the big question at TE is not Gronkowski but with Allen.

Can we get the blocking from Allen to make the running game better and the 3rd and 1 yard when we desperately need it?Report

Allen should only be used for blocking- his ability to catch the ball is on par with Boyce 🙂Report

Now it makes sense as to why TB12’s pass to him when he was wide open was bad. He really, really didn’t want to throw it to him. Nobody else was open so at the last second figured he give it a shot.:)Report

Have a feeling he’ll be a scratch though. It’ll be a short turn around week for Tampa so I think they hold him out this game.Report
