Pats-Chiefs All-22 Dive-In

-by memokerobi

I’d like to do a new series this year where I look at All-22 film from the Pats’ previous matchup and analyze 5-6 plays from the game in a two-part series to highlight themes that occurred during the game. Instead of highlight plays that most of you will have seen tens of times by the time I post the piece, I want to look at more under-the-radar plays that we wouldn’t focus on during the game. I won’t have the time to do it every week but if you guys like the content I’m going to try to do as many as possible. It’s also important to say that I am not a football expert and I am going to try and interpret what I see on film and there’s a good chance not everything I say will be 100% accurate.

Let’s start with 6 plays from the forgettable Chiefs game that I hope will inspire a 2014-like run. Since 42 points is the most allowed by a Pats team in the Bill Belichick era, I wanted to focus on Pats D vs the Chiefs O. The first part will be about how the Chiefs succeeded on inside runs on first downs that later set up the outside run game for big gains, and the second part will be about how they got the ball in Tyreek Hill’s hands who was surely the main point of the Pats defensive gameplan along with Travis Kelce.

Inside Runs

1st quarter, 1st & 10 at KC 25, 12:08 remaining:

Run middle

(GIF)

The first play we’ll look at is the first offensive play for the Chiefs which resulted in a Kareem Hunt fumble. The Patriots are lined up with Alan Branch and Malcom Brown playing as 3-techniques, Dont’a Hightower and Trey Flowers on the edges and Kyle Van Noy and Jordan Richards as their linebackers against the Chiefs 13 personnel. Chiefs center Mitch Morse is uncovered in this play (no defender lined up over him) and the Chiefs take advantage of this, running up the middle through the A gap. On the back side of the play, LT Eric Fisher slides to block Malcom Brown with LG Bryan Witzmann moving to the second level to take Van Noy. Morse and RG Laurent Duvernay-Tardif double-team Branch on the play side, and the RT Mitchell Schwartz takes Hightower. Alex Smith fakes the QB option to freeze Flowers for a second which allows the Chiefs to not block him on the play. Morse does a great job of moving Branch out of his spot with his push and then working up to the second level to block Richards. Witzmann effectively takes Van Noy out of the play. With the play side DT moved and both LBs blocked, a huge hole opens up in the middle allowing Hunt to rush for 7 yards. Glad he fumbled!

1st quarter, 1st & 10 at 50, 6:34 remaining:

A gup run 2

(GIF)

The Pats are almost aligned the same way as the previous play vs 12 personnel from the Chiefs with the only difference being the alignments of LBs Van Noy and Richards. This is a similar run blocking scheme by the Chiefs. The entire offensive line moves to the right as if blocking an outside run but the run goes through the A gap again. There are double teams to both the DTs and to Hightower as well and Kelce takes Flowers this time. Morse does a great job again here pancaking Branch and moving up and blocking Van Noy. Witzmann completely takes Richards out of the play after giving a little shove to Brown to help Fisher’s block. The Pats do a poor job of holding the double teams and attacking the gaps allowing the Chiefs’ O-line to move freely which results in another big gain on first down by Hunt (9 yards).

3rd quarter, 1st & 10 at KC 25, 15:00 remaining

inside run

(GIF)

This may be a designed outside run with Hunt cutting back to the middle but I think it was a designed run up the middle. The Pats are again using two 3-techniques, but with Lawrence Guy replacing Branch, and Richards playing on the line as an OLB and the Chiefs are on the field with 21 personnel. At this point it was like watching the same thing over and over again and I was wondering if the Pats were ever able to stop it; they were!! (On the play Hightower got injured with David Harris doing a good job.) Chiefs’ O-line is on the move again showing an outside run. There are double teams across the board this time with FB Anthony Sherman & Schwartz on Hightower, Duvernay-Tardif & Morse on Guy, and Witzmann & Fisher on Brown. A good play design on the fake reverse to Hill freezes both Flowers and Richards just for a moment. With Guy committing to stopping the outside run after the ball is snapped, Morse moves straight up to Van Noy who has inside leverage and a good shot at bringing down Hunt, misses the tackle and this goes for 10 yards.

It was important for the Patriots to limit the Chiefs on 1st down to force them into 2nd/3rd and long situations but they failed to do so throughout the night. Failing to stop the inside runs helped the Chiefs to get into manageable downs which allowed them to use their entire playbook. It also resulted in them setting up the outside run game which they later used for huge gains and to close the game out making this a very enjoyable night for one Mr. Roger Goodell.

Part 2 to come

As long as Cooks and Hogan stay healthy, and keep the D honest with covering the deep and wide parts of the field, a nice balance of run and RB’s routes should be able to move the ball enough to win. And lets hope the TE’s get more involved. I’m going to have a party when Allen catches his first ball this year (if Brady ever looks to him again)Report

http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/8466/rex-burkhead

Sure he may line up in the slot from time to time. BB moves players around a lot but I don’t see Burkhead and any kind of a consistent replacement for Edelman.Report

HunterCenter
Member
Free agent

I just don’t see how there could be a 1-for-1 replacement for Edelman. Not even a healthy Amendola. Cooks could probably do it, but that would hurt the Pats on the outside. The Edelman Gap is going to have to be filled by good game planning and using multiple players to fill the role. Diversity.Report

BoSoxJim
Member
Free agent

Cooks in the slot makes the most sense though. Dorsett won’t be able to do it and Hogan is far more effective as the X.Report

HunterCenter
Member
Free agent

and I would think we will see Cooks in the slot some. My point is just that there is not a 1-for-1 replacement. It will likely be mix-and-match with multiple players.

Bottom line for me is that our RB unit is now the deepest and most talented skill position unit on the team. USE THEM, McD and Brady!!!Report

BoSoxJim

In 3 WR sets I would want to see Cooks in the slot, Hogan as the X and Dorsett as the Z.

HunterCenter

obviously they will adjust week to week according to the matchup. I’m just making a general statement. All else being equal, I’d rather see a Pony grouping with motions, etc. than Dorsett on the field.Report

BoSoxJim

Dorsett on the field would mean that a safety will have to take him into account. That will open up the middle of the field (short to intermediate routes). Not to mention making life easier for whoever is on the other side.Report

A few Patriots-related thoughts from last night’s TNF:
-Houston’s D-Line remains a problem for other teams.
-Pats will have to, once again, game plan for a QB that can and will run.
-Houston’s CBs dropped like flies last night. Don’t think Tom and Josh didn’t see that.
-Gilmore vs. Hopkins will be quite the battle.
-Texans have a rookie LB out there. He’s good, but I think he can be exploited by any of the Pats pass catching RBs.Report

Last Thursday night he averaged 2.83 seconds to throw and 56.4 percent of his passes came after 2.6 seconds. On those 12 three man rushes, the Chiefs averaged 8.1 yards per play and 3.6 seconds to throw.
