Y-Not Factors 2017

-by DNOMN8R314

After posting a few bold predictions in the comments, one of you (I can’t remember who it was, but thank you for the inspiration) suggested I post my baseless predictions as an article and call them the “Y Not Factors.” I like it.

For now, these are going to cover the entire season. They may pop back once or twice over the year if more inspiration strikes, but at the moment, these are my three 2017 bold predictions. These are the Y-Not Factors.

Nate Solder catches a touchdown pass: Against Kansas City, Solder lined up as the eligible tackle in goal line sets, with LaAdrian Waddle taking his normal place on the line. Solder is one of only two Patriots with a touchdown catch from Brady in the postseason but not in the regular season [SURPRISE TRIVIA QUESTION: who is the other? Answer below], and if Mike Gillislee continues to perform well on the goal line, that could set up a tackle-eligible pass against a team who sells out to stop the run.

Dion Lewis gets traded: [EDIT: D.J. Foster has been signed off the Patriots’ practice squad by the Cardinals, TEN MINUTES after I wrote this, rendering a large chunk of this paragraph irrelevant.] This is the topic I’m seeing all over Twitter today with the news of David Johnson’s wrist injury. The Patriots do have a strong running back depth chart with Gillislee, Rex Burkhead, James White, and Lewis, and D.J. Foster (who has had two strong preseasons) is on the practice squad. While Lewis’ elusiveness is a fantastic trait to have on the field and New England has not been actively shopping him, I do see three points that suggest to me a potential trade. First, Lewis only saw five offensive snaps Week 1, and while there are lots of points of criticism against Josh McDaniels’ plan for the offense, this stat does suggest Lewis may no longer be seen as a main focus of the offense. Second, if injuries continue (which unfortunately seems likely), the possibility of a team upping the price to get Lewis increases. Bill Belichick and Nick Caserio wore the Seahawks down over the summer to acquire Cassius Marsh; it’s entirely possible someone will be persistent enough to get Lewis. The third point is Foster, for whom New England has tried to make a roster spot each of the past two seasons. Last year they were able to, while this year the running back is on the practice squad, and the easiest way to open a spot would be to trade Lewis.

Cody Hollister scores a touchdown before Jacob Hollister: [SURPRISE TRIVIA ANSWER: James Develin, in the same game. I think he gets one this year too.] Jacob may be the third tight end on the roster, but as he is a receiving specialist and not primarily a blocker, I think New England will generally keep him as a healthy scratch for most of the season, should injuries not get in the way. The Patriots did the same thing with A.J. Derby last year, keeping the preseason standout on the inactive list, before trading him to Denver. While Cody’s signing was mainly met with reactions of “awesome, twins!” and “special teams,” the receiver flashed in the later preseason games (yes, against backups, I know). Should injuries continue to wallop New England’s WR corps and special teams units, Cody could find himself not only on the roster but on the field in both areas. (Of course, now that I made this prediction, watch Jacob be active next week and score three TDs.)

Man, the only thing worse then seeing pats get crushed at home in that fashion is the anticipation of the rebound game. Ok, it’s actually not worse, that Thursday night game was far more worse. I just hope Danny gets cleared, this O needs him badly. Brady was 105-0 when leading in the 4th at home until last week!

Ayers was a great pickup in 2014. But, I’m hoping Wise and Marsh will solidify at DE, so HT can return to form at LB, and Van Noy, Harris can really step up. I’m betting we see more Roberts this week, and I hope Langi gets healthy. He looked like the real deal in preseason.

Neil X

He’s on the team to run 5 yards behind whomever is carrying the ball.

jdlboot14

I completely agree… I’m just hoping if he’s our only option, he better step up his game. But, if that Jets team didn’t want him anymore, he might just be done.

Neil X

Isn’t Rodney Harrison a first ballot HOFer? He was the first player in NFL history to have both 20 INTs and 20 sacks, and he still holds the record for most sacks by a defensive back.

hugowasmyhomeboy
Member
Free agent

I think he is! I was thinking more of the career Pats in the discussion below though (Seymour, Law, Bruschi, Vinatieri, Light, McGinest)

Neil X
Member
Free agent

Right, and Randy Moss will get in too.

I think Big Vince is HOF worthy, but nose tackles seldom make it.

hugowasmyhomeboy
Member
Free agent

Moss seems to have rehabilitated his public image quite a bit. Might have to wait a year for tradition’s sake like T.O. but he’s a lock to get in eventually.

JLStokes
Member

His reputation MIGHT hold him out the first year, but IMO, he’s a first ballet.

hugowasmyhomeboy
Member

They’re gonna vote Dawkins in over him, possibly John Lynch too. I think Rodney is as deserving as either of those guys, they were just more popular players. There’s also Rod Woodson to contend with.

JLStokes

I don’t think the Patriots defense is as bad as people have been making it out to be. Like I said, we’ve seen this movie before. Every season, Bill tinkers and experiments with stuff defensively until he finds what every player is good at and then everything gels. Look at the stuff that works so far: 3rd down pass rush and secondary (in general). Right now the middle of the defense (Linebackers) is the problem, but that automatically upgrades when you move Hightower back to proper position.

We’ll see an entirely different defense by game 4-5.

dp73
Member
Free agent

It was just one week. We are certainly a rush to judgement crowd. lol

M.Fan
Member
Free agent

But these issues are linked: if you move back HT to his proper position, you automatically make the linebackers more stable, but also automatically lose some of the threat and punch that he gave on third down pass rushes. I guess that issue is more that some no-name players will need to upgrade their playing level than some star players playing at another position. And we have no guarantee that no-name linebackers will be able to improve…

That’s why its interesting. His bonus is capped at $10M if he comes this winter or next, since he’s treated like an amateur FA under the new CBA.
So now the question becomes – is the MLB going to threaten teams not to give him an extension a year after to he signs?

dp73

I am looking forward to the Patriots getting back into the win column this week against New Orleans. I just don’t think that it will be easy without a better more consistent pass rush then last week. This is a good secondary but they need help from the pass rush.

Neil X
Member
Free agent

They are 6.5 point favorites. Vegas seems to think it will be rather easy for them.

dp73
Member
Free agent

Some here thought they would go 19-0. I am saying we need to pull back and see how this season unfolds. I still think the Patriots will bounce back from the loss last week but I don’t think everything will be easy. This team like all teams have question marks.

Neil X
Member
Free agent

Well the 19-0 talk was always silly. But the Saints are a truly bad football team. Their defense is a total mess. I expect a much better effort from the Patriots this Sunday.

hugowasmyhomeboy
Member
Free agent

Their defense is a total mess, but they can play in a shootout, and they’re in the dome.
I would caution people not to overreact to their low scoring game last week. That Vikings defense is filthy.

JLStokes
Member
Free agent

I think “total mess” is stretching it a bit.

dp73
Member
Free agent

Right, the Patriots aren’t an 19-0 team and I do expect a better effort this week but to go back and think every game the Patriots play will be an easy win is a mistake. Especially, on the road in New Orleans.

hugowasmyhomeboy
Member
Free agent

I just want to see the Pats control the middle of the field on defense better this time. The Chiefs had success running the ball, and worked us with crossers and RBs out of the backfield all night. Made it easy.

Honestly, Brandin Cooks should be working the slot… Dorsett should be playing the role of DA/Hogan/LaFell.. The outside guy running hitch routes. Throwing Dorsett into a position with such a complex route tree would be suicide for the offense.

Simms has been terrible for years, but when he started with Nantz in the late 90’s he was quite good and a breath of fresh air. I think the closer the player is to their playing days, the sharper they are in the booth. Then the game seems to pass them by, or they don’t care to put in the effort to prepare and study like they used to, and their sharp analysis is replaced with confusing platitudes about grit and determination. Or you’re John Gruden and you just go straight for the grit.

I don’t get why ESPN has the Steelers as #1 in the power rankings. They were anything but impressive and needed a Kenny Britt drop to secure a win against the Browns. Chiefs, Packers, Cowboys all more impressive imo.

They make power rankings so much more difficult than they should be. I think they’re just purposely trolling for clicks.

I still wished we had drafted a LB instead of Cyrus Jones. Just think if we hadnt lost that first round pick in the 2016 draft we would have drafted Jaylon Smith

Or Myles Jack, he was back to his old self with 14 tackles vs HOU. He was killing my USC boys when he was at UCLA.

I’m not sure BB would have drafted Jaylon Smith in the 1st round. Cowboys took a huge risk drafting him when they did as he didn’t just have torn ligaments but he also had nerve damage.

Kareem Hunt, RB, Kansas City Chiefs (Overall grade: 85.9; season snap count: 39) With the exception of a fumble on his very first carry, Hunt’s professional debut was simply spectacular.
