Roster Projections 2017 Preview

-by DNOMN8R314

The Patriots have already begun to trim the roster in advance of Cutdown Saturday, so it’s time to close the tide (low tide) of entries and give hints at how we all might have done with our projections before results after the 53 is first finalized.

One important note. Because half the rosters received had Justin Coleman on the team and were unable to edit a new player in, I moved the deadline to the time his trade was announced. I received four rosters after that point; I am still going to track them individually, but their picks are not counted towards cumulative totals.

(I had set a hard deadline this year because last year – and I think also the year before – my deadline was “11:59 the day before or when the Patriots make their first cut,” and no cuts were announced until cutdown day itself. I assumed the same thing, so naturally, we’ve already seen some cuts. That is my fault; I apologize.)

Aside from those four, I tallied 26 rosters. Sixteen of those are from beat writers and bloggers, and all of those are from before the Coleman trade. (Any beat writer’s or blogger’s roster that came out after, such as Phil Perry’s and Doug Kyed’s latest, I did not tally. Also, I am sure I missed somebody’s. My bad.) The other 10 come from NEPFF contributors.

This year I made sure to tally not only how many rosters each player was on, but how many were from writers and how many from commenters. For your cutdown previewing pleasure, here are some general tidbits. (Again, these omit the post-Coleman-trade rosters, with one exception.)

  • Normally I list the players who were on every roster and those who were on none. Because of the length of those lists, I’m not going to do that. I will however, list all those who are on one, two, or three, and those who are on all but one, two, or three.
    • Players on only one, two, or three projections, in alphabetical order: Cole Croston, Keionta Davis, Jamil Douglas, Jonathan Freeny (who is reportedly being cut), Woodrow Hamilton, Cody Hollister, D.J. Killings, Will Likely, Devin Lucien, Kenny Moore II, Derek Rivers (confusion over the IR rules, probably), Damarius Travis.
      • One of the above players is only on one projection, and one which was entered after the Coleman trade.
    • Players only omitted from one, two, or three projections, in alphabetical order: Adam Butler, Nate Ebner, Marquis Flowers, Jonathan Jones, Brandon King, Harvey Langi, Matthew Slater, Vincent Valentine, Deatrich Wise Jr.
  • I will also say that 36 players were on every projection, while 16 (excluding Lucien) were on zero.
  • Player whom writers expect to make the roster and commenters don’t (biggest disparity): James O’Shaughnessy, on 12 writer projections (75 percent) but only three commenter projections (30 percent).
  • Player whom commenters expect to make the roster and writers don’t (biggest disparity): Geneo Grissom, on eight commenter projections (80 percent) but only five writer projections (37.5 percent).
  • Of the players removed from the roster today, only Coleman and Freeny were on any projections. (There is also one report that LaAdrian Waddle will be cut, and he is on several projections as well.)

That’s all I’ve got. Tomorrow (well, today) is going to be a long day.

Well, can’t compare him to Carr because Carr is a rookie. If you compare his skills and production to Lucien then Dorsett has the advantage easy. I think you are smart to question if he will work out or not, Nate. But Dorsett is a typical boom or bust type guy that Bill likes to take chances on. Under team control for two more years at cheap rates. Former #1 pick with hard to find natural athleticism/speed. Worth the risk, imoReport

Carr and Lucien offer more upside IMOReport

zoocore

Carr and Lucien may have had more experience in this system, albeit very little, but Dorsett has wayyy more upside. That said I don’t think he will be much more than a STer.Report

redemption50
Member
Free agent

Dorsett has tons of “upside” but hasn’t shown that he can use it. I don’t know much about Carr or Lucien but in terms of raw talent and athleticism, Dorsett has tons more than those twoReport

redemption50

Rotoworld: Paxton Lynch (shoulder) is expected to miss five weeks.
It explains why the Broncos felt so much urgency to get Brock Osweiler signed on Saturday. NFL Network is calling Lynch’s injury a “bruise,” but it’s clearly more significant than that. There are no plans to I.R. him yet. Report

Rotoworld: Chiefs GM Brett Veach insisted Saturday that there is no quarterback controversy in Kansas City.
First-round pick Patrick Mahomes showed terrific skills in the preseason, but he remains a raw developmental player, and the Chiefs believe Alex Smith gives them their best chance to win. “There is no gray area,” insisted Veach. “Alex is so far advanced from the mental side of things in regard to his ability to read coverages, to shift us out of plays and really play the chess game. He’s so far ahead of where Pat is. I don’t think it’s even close right now.” Report

For this season, I would expect him to be just a go-route/deep slant receiver. Depends on how long it takes to learn the playbook, build chemistry with TB12 (which includes getting on the same page as him on their multitude of option routes).
Read somewhere that he isn’t considered a return guy, but I would hope that’s one of the reasons they traded for him as I don’t think he’ll contribute much this season as a WR.Report
