Preseason Y Factors 2017: Patriots at Lions

-by DNOMN8R314

It’s just about time for the third preseason game, a.k.a. the one where starters play and people go nuts, forgetting it is still August. That said, Game 3 can give us some valuable insight, particularly bubble players’ standing on the depth chart. Even though Patriots writers generally agree that there are only a few roster spots open on New England’s 53, there is still plenty of debate as to who might claim those places on the back of the squad. While discussion continues regarding the usual attention-grabbers (such as D.J. Foster, Jacob Hollister, Adam Butler, and Austin Carr, all of whom have earned their attention), here are a few who might have slipped beneath the collective vision.

(By the way, it was pointed out that none of the players I listed last week had any impact on the game. To which I say, what else is new, that’s what usually happens in the regular season.)

Kyle Van Noy, LB: “But Van Noy is a starter! How could you include him?” To the however-many of you who might be thinking that, and to the rest of you who aren’t, I’ve included Van Noy more because I’m curious as to how Bill Belichick will utilize his outside linebackers. Since his activation from PUP, Dont’a Hightower has participated in workouts with the defensive linemen, not linebackers, fueling speculation that Belichick will use OLBs such as Hightower, Van Noy, and/or Shea McClellin on the defensive edge to offset the loss of Derek Rivers. Since the third game is traditionally The Starters’ Game, we should see some confirming or debunking evidence Friday night.

Trevor Bates, LB: Back to the main point of this article, Bates put forth a strong showing against Houston, which has led to some predictions of a roster spot. Another OLB, Bates spend last year on the practice squad and has played decently in coverage and on the line of scrimmage. In a group of linebackers that contains few players who are masters at any one particular skill set, if Bates continues or increases his level of play, that may be enough to make the team.

Josh Augusta, DT: While Augusta has had long odds to crack a deep DT group since the beginning of camp, he is the second-largest player on the roster, listed on the team website as 335 pounds (tied with Marcus Cannon, behind only 350-lb. Alan Branch). Of course, size is unimportant if a player does not know how to properly use it to his advantage – there is no way for me to reword that phrase to remove any innuendo – so the next two weeks will be important to see if Augusta sticks around at all in Foxboro.

Cody Hollister, WR: Despite being very near the bottom of the receiving depth chart, the other Hollister could end up on the practice squad with a strong showing on special teams. One of the main points made when Hollister was signed was his frequent special teams play, and he has seen time on third units during preseason games. Belichick frequently emphasizes the importance of special teams, so even with minimal offensive impact, Hollister may spend more time in New England than thought if he continues strong ST play.

Kenny Moore II, CB: Moore’s journey this August has been a particularly interesting one, marked by strong play in early practices but minimal impact in preseason games, both on defense and special teams. Moore is seeing a lot of time at gunner, so it is possible Belichick sees him as on the Jonathan Jones career path. To at least one outside observer, Moore could end up anywhere from the roster to the practice squad to no longer in Foxboro, so his performance in these two games will certainly be one to watch.

I don’t know why so many pundits are trying to find WR’s for Pats to bring in for JE… No one can replace what he does – it’s all based on seeing with the same eyes as Brady (for 9 years) Otherwise, we have 4 guys who were going to be fighting for targets anyway. I think adding Carr is smarter than trying to find another mid-range vet to struggle and be too far behind to matterReport

We know Amendola can carry a good portion of the load that JE11 did, like in past when JE was out, and playoffs… but the team was hoping not to have to use DA that much, because I’m worried he won’t make it through the year healthy either. But timing with Cooks needs time to develop, so in those clutch moments, it’s going to be Hogan, DA, Gronk (and RB’s – White/Lewis)Report

Well, the writing was on the wall the moment Sashi Brown issued this statement after the trade:

from foxsports.com

Browns general manager Sashi Brown sounded thrilled about adding the second-round pick but didn’t show that same level of enthusiasm for Osweiler.

“We’re really excited to acquire a second round draft choice in this trade,” Brown said in a statement. “Draft picks are extremely important to our approach in building a championship caliber football team. We are intent on adding competition to every position on our roster and look forward to having Brock come in and compete.” Report

Wow, Volin’s latest 53 is shocking, but I haven’t really considered Brissett not making it in light of JE11 injury. Also, 5 OT’s?? without any depth on interior except Karras – not smart IMO. And, I’m not sold on O’Shaughnessy, and I’m sick of evaluations for Hollister that only use 2nd string context. Some guys are gamers. And Carr seems like he’s a gamer too. Some guys have a feel for the game and fight for balls, have toughness, excel in pressure. They deserve to have a chance at the bottom of the roster IMO.Report

I know I’m on the extreme pessimistic cliff here, but wasting a 2nd rd on Ealy turning out to be a headcase, and hearing all the Moss-esque hype about Cooks – which could easily turn out to be an “Ochocinco” situation and waste of a 1st rd too… We may see another rendition of “just because a WR is great in a free-for-all offense, or looks good in TC, does not mean he’ll be great here”Report

Hope Amendola has his best year yet – a full 16 games. Hogan is ready to be a major star. Cooks has been invisible, but I hope that’s on purpose, and they’ll start game planning with him once it counts. If Mitchell can come back at full health I still feel okay with WR’s, considering Gronk seems 100% and all of our RB’s are excellent slot receivers. (I do hope Carr makes it now, why not groom the rookie as a 5th WR) In fact, DJ Foster might make it as well – he’s a great slash/slot player with experience… Read more »

“I know you like to disagree with folks out here”

??????? I’m giving my opinion on what was said. I know, it’s something that you never do here….right?

It makes no sense to sign Foster to the 53 as a WR. If they had played him at WR all during camp and in preseason games, I would probably feel differently.

BoSoxJim

Your question is irrelevant. If he thought Foster had abilities as a WR then he would have been giving him reps as a WR in practice, and preseason games (regardless of who was ahead of him). That way he could evaluate if Foster could actually contribute to the team as a WR. The one time they had him at WR was during intramural scrimmage in the summer and from all reports, he failed miserably agasint the bottom of the roster DBs. If he had time to develop at WR could he be serviceable? Maybe. But is taking a roster spot… Read more »
