Best Patriots One-Year Rentals

-by DNOMN8R314

Some of the most understated impacts on modern-day NFL teams come from players who are only with that team for a single year. In the free agency market, it’s easy for players on one-year contracts who are not extended mid-season (in other words, not Danny Woodhead or Dion Lewis) to ride the success of one extremely successful year into a much larger contract, whereupon that one successful year becomes either the start of a great career or an outlier for an average player.

In the 2000s, the Patriots have had their share of one-year acquisitions. Some of them became franchise favorites, while others didn’t pan out at all (et tu, Deltha O’Neal?). Here are twelve of the better ones from the Brady-Belichick era, listed alphabetically. (I’m sure I missed an obvious one. If I did, let me know with the most viciously-worded comment possible.)

Mark Anderson, DE, 2011: An unheralded defensive end who had split the previous season between the Bears and Texans, Anderson beat out Eric Moore for the 2011 Patriots’ pass-rushing specialist role. As the third DE behind Andre Carter and Rob Ninkovich, Anderson burst out with 10 sacks, the most since his 12-sack rookie season, and with Carter lost for the playoffs added 2.5 more in the postseason. Anderson went on to sign a three-year deal with the Bills, but only played in five games, recording one sack, before his career came to an end. (By the way, if you’re wondering why Carter isn’t on this list, it’s because he had a second stint with the Patriots, playing some games in New England in 2013.)

Akeem Ayers, LB, 2014: In need of a viable third linebacker after Jerod Mayo was lost for the season, the Patriots traded for Ayers. The former Titan made an immediate impact, recording a sack in each of his first two games as a Patriot. Playing well both as a pass rusher and in coverage, Ayers finished the year with four sacks, an interception, and a Super Bowl ring.

Martellus Bennett, TE, 2016: After Scott Chandler’s injury- and drop-marred 2015, the Patriots acquired Bennett from the Bears, where popular conception was that the tight end was a malcontent. But the man we all now call “Mahty” immediately became a fan favorite in New England; his personality made him well-liked, there were no reports of him being divisive, and his play made him a solid backup (later substitute) for Rob Gronkowski. Bennett ended the season with six touchdowns, and nearly caught the game-winning touchdown in the Super Bowl were it not for a blatant pass interference. Bennett is now a Packer, but he will always be welcome around Foxboro.

Brandon Browner, CB, 2014: The other noteworthy cornerback signing in 2014, Browner did not play in the first six games of the season (four games for PEDs, two scratches) before providing a hammer in the New England secondary for the remainder of the season. Despite his high penalty count, Browner’s enforcer attitude was appreciated and his hard hits were admired. Browner finished the season with one interception and the most important prevented receiver pick in NFL history.

Bryan Cox, LB, 2001: Cox only played in 11 games in 2001 due to injury – his departure opening the door for Tedy Bruschi to become TEDY BRUSCHI – but the hard-hitting veteran linebacker made a key impact (literally) in New England’s first Super Bowl-winning season. With an 0-2 record, starting an unheralded sixth-round second-year quarterback for the first time, and facing Peyton Manning’s Colts, Cox flattened Jerome Pathon across the middle, setting a tone for the game and the season. (Apparently, Cox also had a single reception in 2001. I do not remember it at all.)

Akiem Hicks, DL, 2015: Acquired at the end of September, Hicks surprised those who weren’t certain if he had a position on the Patriots’ defensive line by being one of the team’s most consistent linemen throughout the season. He ended the year with three sacks and a fumble recovery for a touchdown, the team’s first defensive touchdown in two years, before signing with Chicago the following offseason.

Brandon Lloyd, WR, 2012: Attempting to bolster an uncertain corps of wide receivers that had still made it to the Super Bowl the previous year, the Patriots signed Lloyd, who finished second on the team in receptions (74) and receiving yards (911), only behind Wes Welker in both categories. However, drops and minimal yards after the catch led to his release after the season.

Chris Long, DE, 2016: Signed to a one-year deal last season, Long came to New England with the hope of winning a Super Bowl, and despite only a fair statistical season, he got that wish. While last year’s defensive end group was never consistent (although Trey Flowers emerged as the season went on), Long provided a veteran presence alongside Rob Ninkovich [EDITOR’S NOTE: still miss ya, Nink], and recorded four sacks on the year, including a game-sealing strip-sack against the Jets.

Darrelle Revis, CB, 2014: After losing Aqib Talib to the Broncos in free agency, the Patriots quickly found their replacement #1 corner in Revis, who had been released by Tampa Bay. In New England, Revis played up to his shutdown reputation from New York, recording two interceptions and pairing with Browner to form one of the best cornerback duos in the league that season. After winning his first Super Bowl that season, Revis returned to the Jets, while the Patriots chose to move forward with undrafted rookie and Super Bowl XLIX hero Malcolm Butler as their top corner. We know how that decision worked out.

Keith Traylor, DT, 2004: After Ted Washington’s departure (more on him very soon), the Patriots brought in Traylor to play nose tackle in Bill Belichick’s 3-4 defense. Traylor started 12 of 19 games (including the playoffs) and provided a stopgap for New England to develop surprise first-round pick Vince Wilfork [EDITOR’S NOTE: miss ya too, Vince], helping anchor a sixth-ranked run defense.

Ted Washington, DT, 2003: The original gigantic nose tackle in the Patriots’ dynasty, Washington was acquired for a fourth-round draft pick and was easily worth the price. The center of a line that stifled opposing rush attacks, Washington’s 375-pound frame totaled 45 tackles on the season, as he earned his only career Super Bowl ring.

Brian Waters, G, 2011: Waters was signed just before the 2011 season to solidify an injured offensive line and did just that, starting every game en route to a Super Bowl appearance. Unfortunately, Waters is remembered less around New England for his stellar play and more for his subsequent holdout, which lasted the entire 2012 season and resulted in many #LockerWatch jokes amongst Patriots beat writers on Twitter.

I think we all hope he can bounce back but as the days go by I become less optimistic. He may be someone who can do well in practice but when it comes to playing, he’s different. It’s the only explanation why BB kept putting him back in PRs last year. Every time Cyrus had a bad game, it seemed like the practice notes showed he did well the following week of practice…then BB puts him back in the following week and he messed up again.Report

Former Patriots nose tackle Lester Williams died at his home in Birmingham, Ala., on Wednesday. He was 58.

Williams played in 40 games for the Patriots from 1982-1985, including as a starter in Super Bowl XX. During his four-year career in New England, Williams made 39 solo tackles, 60 assists, five sacks, three fumble recoveries and five pass breakups.
The second of the Patriots’ two first-round draft picks (27th overall) in the 1982 NFL Draft, Williams quickly established himself as a mainstay on the defensive front. He started all nine games during his NFL strike-shortened rookie year.Report

Tony Dungy, Buccaneers contribute to have Tampa Confederate monument removed

Former Buccaneers coach Tony Dungy helped raise money to have a Confederate monument removed from the front of the courthouse in Downtown Tampa, and the Buccaneers rose to the occasion after Dungy challenged them to help.

Top draft pick Derek Rivers returns to Boston for further tests on injury.

“While the New England Patriots stayed at The Greenbrier before departing for Houston on Thursday, top draft pick Derek Rivers returned to Boston for further tests on his injured left leg/knee, which highlights how the team has a growing personnel issue at a defensive end position that was already thin at the outset of training camp after Rob Ninkovich’s retirement”.-Mike ReissReport

iTunes is only “symlinking” to your files. Are the songs on your computer in a folder? If they are, simply “select all” (in iTunes) and delete the songs from iTunes. Then go to your Folder of music and drag and drop it into iTunes.Report

okay, so I deleted it and reinstalled it into its own folder (I installed it into d drive previously, where it was all over the place).
