Hugo’s Training Camp Observations (7/29)

-by Hugo (obviously)

The crowds were massive. I’ve never seen it like that before. Nice day outside, with blustery winds that the coaches must love.

There were some luminaries in attendance. Brad Stevens and Ernie Adams were on the field. Kevin Faulk floated around alone in his red jacket, watching. No sign of Robert Kraft.

Practice was very physical, as you’d expect the first day in pads to be. During a goal line rep drill, Elandon Roberts met Mike Gillislee in the hole and you could have heard it from Walpole. Gillislee absorbed the contact without breaking his stride for a TD.

The guys fighting to make the roster usually make their case on special teams. With that in mind, kicks were returned by Julian Edelman, D.J. Foster, Cyrus Jones, and UDFA defensive back Will Likely. Edelman, Jones, Likely and Brandin Cooks were returning punts. Jones didn’t have a muff, but you could tell he looked shaky. On kick returns, the other guys were shuffling until they had the ball lined up, then running towards it and catching it in stride. Jones was taking a direct path to the ball, and settling under the ball to catch it before running. The gunner pairings were Matthew Slater/Jonathan Jones, Foster/Justin Coleman, and Eric Rowe/Kenny Moore. Rex Burkhead was a vice on the punt team. Rookies D.J. Killings and Dwayne Thomas got a lot of work there as well.

Ryan Allen shanked several punts. Bad day at work for him. Two of them were short-field type shanks, and the third ended up in the bleachers, much to the amusement of the crowd.

Watching Edelman run the cone drills is poetry in motion. There’s so much violence in his cuts. He plants his foot and just launches in another direction. Cooks gets through them just as quickly, but it’s more quiet. He’s a bit like a hummingbird – everything is moving at a higher frequency. Cooks, Edelman, and Chris Hogan were noticeably in a different class than the rest of the wide receivers. Neither Devin Lucien nor Austin Carr gave any reason to think they’ll be in the NFL. Malcolm Mitchell was on the field early on but wasn’t practicing. Didn’t notice either of the Hollister twins.

On the subject of bubble guys, there was a long touchdown from Brady to Cooks that had the crowd going wild, but it looked like more of an undressing of Nate Ebner at safety than anything else. Ebner took a really bad angle to help Coleman with a deep ball that he really ought to have reached.

It was a bit difficult to see the offensive line-defensive line 1-v-1s (the most interesting part of the day) from where I was. From what I could make out, Derek Rivers and Geneo Grissom didn’t do much of anything. Rivers is pretty maxed out at 250 pounds. Vincent Valentine had a loud win over a lineman I couldn’t identify, but for the most part the 1-v-1s that didn’t involve Trey Flowers seemed to be fought to a draw.

Flowers is a wild man. If you were a stranger to the practice, you’d think he was on the bubble by how he was flying around. He mauls whatever is in front of him. The defensive linemen did a cool open-field tackling drill where they had to react to where the pop-up dummy was, tackle it in space, then pounce on a loose football that an assistant would drop. Flowers flattened the pop-up dummy, got up and pounced on the football like the assistant was Kim Jong-Un and it contained the US.. nuclear codes.

I didn’t get much of a look at the offensive line, outside of the 1-v-1s on the far field. They were working directly in front of me where the depth perception wasn’t good. During 7-on-7s, Tony Garcia was at LT and Conor McDermott at RT. They are both very lean. Max Rich, the Harvard tackle who it was suggested I keep an eye out for, was playing RG. At one point, McDermott had to run a lap.

Solder looks to be on the same schedule he’s been for several years now – looking rusty in preseason, and rounding into form in time for the real games. We’ve seen the movie enough times not to be nervous about it. But it does make me wonder if there’s a reason why that we’ll never hear about, like Matt Light’s Crohn’s disease.

The first-team defensive front had Flowers, Malcom Brown at 1-tech, Lawrence Guy at 3-tech, and Grissom in the place of Rob Ninkovich [EDITOR’S NOTE: Miss you already Rob]. They were backed up by David Harris, and some combination of Kyle Van Noy and Shea McClellin.

McClellin played off the line exclusively, no defensive end play. His number wasn’t visible because his jersey was scrunched up, and I wasn’t sure who he was. He looks pretty trim out there. With Ninkovich retiring, some might wonder if McClellin is going to play in his place – it didn’t look like it in practice.

Deatrich Wise got a random rep at DT with the ones. Looked like the kind of thing where they threw in him to see how he’d respond. It really looks to me like he’s ahead of his fellow rookie Rivers on the depth chart – Wise has the strength to play the run immediately.

Kony Ealy didn’t seem like he was very high up the depth chart – decisively behind Grissom. He didn’t really stand out during drills one way or the other. He looks like he’s carrying more weight than I’d expected. Kind of rotund. During the goal line drills it was interesting to see him shaded over the guard, in a spot you normally see a defensive tackle. I wonder if the Pats intend to use him inside more than he was in Carolina.

Might be just me, but Valentine looks like he slimmed down a bit. Didn’t really give any reason to think he’s way up the depth chart. Darius Kilgo is a big dude but was just kinda there.

Because of when we traded for him last year, I hadn’t seen Rowe practice. He is massive, looks big next to Stephon Gilmore. The wide receivers he faced in run-blocking drills ended up with demoralizing results.

The defensive back competition is relatively intriguing. The third corner wasn’t obvious from watching. Butler and Gilmore are clearly the top pairing, but Rowe and Jonathan Jones both got to run with them at times. By his usage, it did seem like Jones is is decisively ahead of Cyrus Jones and Coleman, the other corners who saw any time with the first team.

Duron Harmon got hurt in the end zone, but he looked okay later. Bullet dodged.

Moore didn’t stand out. He did have an impressive interception during 1-v-1s. The receivers were practicing double moves, and he was under one of the receivers, mirrored him, then turned around to go up and get the ball. It was a patient play, that a corner lacking in instincts or composure could not make. He doesn’t look like much of a runner though. Shades of another corner named Moore who played for the Pats in 2011.

Jordan Richards had a good day. He made an acrobatic interception in one-on-ones versus one of the scrub WRs, and then made a tenacious play on the ball vs. Gronk at the goal line. He was clearly running with the bubble guys, but he made the most of it.

Ebner and Slater are special teams players primarily, but at least they practice at a position. Brandon King seemingly doesn’t play on offense or defense at all.

If there was a random UDFA who made an impression on me, it was defensive back Likely. He was running with the scrubs but looked really fluid backpedaling and turning to run. Apparently he’s coming off a big injury. I look forward to watching him play in preseason.

I don’t know if everybody saw one of my posts yesterday about how bad Cutler is.

He is so bad that one fan made a Youtube video with EVERY interception that #Bears QB Jay Cutler has thrown against the #Packers.

And it is …. + 9 minutes video 🙂

The buzz over Devin Lucien seems unwarranted.
He’d surely have to make the team as a gameday inactive, since he’s off the field on kicks. What are the odds of that?
He was a skilled deep threat in college, so it shouldn’t be surprising that he’s had good moments as a deep threat in camp. 1 on 1s are a great setting for players who can track the ball. What are the odds he can get behind NFL help?Report

“As a Patriot fan, it was pretty easy to like Rob Ninkovich,” Kraft added. “New Englanders love rooting for the underdog – the blue collar, overachiever who hustles on each play and does the most to maximize their potential. Rob was truly that guy.”-Robert Kraft

I agree with Mr Kraft .I think that this is happens to lot lot of undrafted players before any preseason games because fans do want to root for the underdog player.Report

But non-ST UDFAs? Those are much rarer. Lucien was a 7th rd pick but he’s non-ST. Adam Butler too.Report

Jdog Lemon Head
Member

For sure it’s true. We all love rooting for the underdog. I think especially for the patriots since BB always preaches that it doesn’t matter how you got here. Most teams don’t operate like that.Report

It’s good to see from a depth standpoint in case there’s an injury…we are loaded for sure so the odds are stacked against him. Hopefully he can land on the PS again.Report

hugowasmyhomeboy

Yeah, idk where the “surprise” is on this team right now. There has to be one. There is every year. I just can’t find it. Grissom maybe? And even then he was a 3rd rd pick a few years ago so even though he didn’t make the team last year, how surprising can it be that the Pats like him?Report

Jdog Lemon Head
Member
Free agent

You talking about Surprise cut? or Surprise sign? or both I guessReport

hugowasmyhomeboy
Member
Free agent

Grissom (if he counts as a surprise) and Kenny Moore II seem like the surprise guys to watch on defense. Langi by default because of the bonus and playing time in practice so far.
Offensively, there’s OL spots up to be had if someone surprises. Just need to see some preseason action to figure out who that may be.
It’s not a surprise if a 5th rd pick doesn’t make the team, but Conor McDermott seems like a candidate to get squeezed if he’s outplayed by an OL who is more versatile. Right now their only backup guard or center is Karras.Report

Jdog Lemon Head

hugowasmyhomeboy

We’ll see how he does. But looking at the roster, it’s hard to see how they fit a sub DT.

hugowasmyhomeboy

hugowasmyhomeboy

Yeah, that’s why I said “starter by snaps”. I’m sure Branch/Brown will be on the field for the first play of the game against KC.
But if Guy is the first choice penetrating tackle, he’ll likely play more snaps. DL equivalent of a nickel corner.Report

Add Jimmy G to my list of must-see players. His value has most likely already peaked, so he had better be sharp! He is the QB version of my car: Should have sold him last league year.

Players I am excited to see play Thursday night:
Gilislee, if he is healthy enough to play
Rex Burkhead
Kenny Moore II, although CB is not a position of much need
Trevor Bates and Harvey Langi, because that is a position of need
Deatrich Wise and Derek Rivers, because that is a position of desperate need
Any rookie OT, because LT is soon to be a position of desperate needReport

Gosh, I hope they play more than the 7 or 8 players you listed or it’ll be a long night for the Pats playing 90 vs 7 or 8 won’t bode well. 🙂Report

Given all that has gone on in the AFC East, I have reconsidered by early predictions and I can’t see any other team being much better than 9-7. And that’ll probably be the Bills. Only the back end schedule will not allow the Pats to clinch al that soon. That and a rash of injuries.Report
