Franchise tag? $23M gtd. Long-term deal? $23M gtd. Having a QB? Priceless.

-by Hugo

The Redskins have franchise-tagged Kirk Cousins, guaranteeing him $23,943,600 for the next year. This is the second consecutive year Cousins has been tagged. The Redskins may attempt to transition-tag him for the 2018 season, continuing a saga that has exposed the fundamental irrelevance of the franchise tag to the quarterback market.

The fifteenth-highest paid quarterback in the NFL (Tom Brady) makes an average of $20,500,000 a year. The fifth-highest paid (Joe Flacco) makes $22,133,333. Fresh off a “market-setting” extension, Derek Carr is slated to average $25,005,000. In other words, half the league’s quarterbacks make at least 80% of what the league’s highest paid quarterback makes.

The franchise tag is based on an aggregate of the highest-paid players at a position. Implicit in this line of thinking, is that paying the vast majority of players like the top 5 at their position is a tough pill to swallow.

But half the NFL’s teams are glad to pay their quarterbacks close to that amount for one year. What they are not glad to do, is guarantee their quarterbacks a significant amount of money. Contracts at the bottom of the starting market (Ryan Tannehill, Sam Bradford, Alex Smith, Colin Kaepernick) pay out $17M to $20M but with low guarantees.

In other words, quarterback contracts are not measured in money, but in years. Shorter commitments are “cheap,” because they allow for the team to pursue a new quarterback in the future if the opportunity arises. Longer commitments are “costly.”

The constraint on paying quarterbacks isn’t how much you’re paying them, but finding them. Thus, while the sequence of tags is highly punitive at other positions, teams have little incentive to avoid it with their quarterbacks. Sure, it’s not cheap in money. But it’s extremely cheap in years. And years represent future possibility to search elsewhere.

If the Redskins get a strong year out of Cousins, he may be rewarded with a new deal. The team may also end up transition-tagging at roughly $28M – a record-breaking outlay in dollars, but not much in years – and continue to expose the inapplicability of the tag sequence as they keep their options open.

Ninkovich’s retirement increases the chance of the Patriot trading for a player sometime during this preseason.

dp73
Member

Ninkovich played in 44.3 percent of the defensive snaps in 2016, which was lower than his norm, in part because he served a four-game suspension to open the season after a positive test for a banned substance he said was from an over-the-counter supplement. But by the end of the year, in the team’s most critical games, his playing time had spiked. This year, Ninkovich projected as a valuable contributor opposite third-year player Trey Flowers, who led the Patriots with seven sacks in 2016. Four-year veteran Kony Ealy, acquired in a trade from the Carolina Panthers, is next on the… Read more »

With Harris here, I think HT will be able to man the edge a lot more as a OLB/DE in situations. And I think Van Noy will take a step up in the middle, with either Roberts or Langi being the extra guy.

jdlboot14
Member
Free agent

I still have no idea if/how McClellin will be used. Or if he’ll even make the team. There’s a lot of new and interesting talent, but very young and raw. (Wise, Rivers, Kidder, Langi)

MrScratch
Member
Free agent

McClellin can play a couple of spots, so I think it’s likely he’s here as a rotational guy. If Harris still something in the tank, he probably rotates at MLb with Roberts. Van Noy was actually very effective as a pass rusher last year and could’ve been in line to take Nink’s role anyway.

jdlboot14
Member
Free agent

I’m worried about our continued legacy of front 7 leadership. Sure, HT has grown, but he’s still pretty young. Once Nink leaves, we’re pretty new/young with that long string of passing on the mantle. Bruschi, Vrabel, McG, Mayo, etc..

We’re asking a lot for Grissom to suddenly take a big leap. And big hopes for Rivers – but as a rookie, that’s a lot to hope for as well. It’s a bad offseason to lose Nink, and not have Long return as well.

Giacomino da Recanati

Giacomino da Recanati

I do not think that Nink retiring is a thing that came up the last 2 days. I think they already have contingency plans ready. If BB want to ask Grissom more is because he thinks he could handle that. If he does not, then move on to other options.

Reiss confirming Ealy in doghouse: “6. Compounding Ninkovich’s absence on the field has been a different-than-anticipated transition from Carolina to New England for defensive end Kony Ealy. The Patriots acquired Ealy and a third-round pick (No. 72) in exchange for a second-rounder (No. 64) in March, and at the time, it seemed like a low-risk move at a bargain-basement cost for a possible No. 3 end behind Trey Flowers and Ninkovich. But Ealy was held out of the first day of training camp (coach’s decision) before returning for the past two days of work. Ealy had also been held out… Read more »

f Ninkovich does decide to retire, I’d expect the Patriots to give him the same type of first-class send-off as they have for others — Matt Light, Kevin Faulk, Troy Brown and Doug Flutie are a few who come to mind. Those send-offs are generally reserved for players who suited up for the franchise for an extended period of time, finished their career with the Patriots and represented the organization with class on and off the field. Ninkovich checks off all the boxes. The Patriots have called a 12:15 p.m. ET news conference for Sunday, and perhaps this is the… Read more »
