NFL Season Previews: Buffalo

-by Hugo

Buffalo Bills

Looking over the numbers, the Buffalo Bills weren’t the team you probably think they were in 2016. Their offense was middle-of-the-pack to good, ranking 11th in points and 16th in yards. Their defense was less effective, 17th in points and 19th in yards.

The Bills will be counting on a lot of new faces defensively after a high-turnover offseason. Zach Brown, quietly one of the best linebackers in the NFL a year ago, is gone. Stephon Gilmore bolted for the rival Patriots. Deep safety/corner hybrid Aaron Williams was forced into retirement. In their place, the Bills will look for new faces to step up. Rookie Tre’Davious White, veteran slot defender Micah Hyde, vet corner Shareece Wright, journeyman Gerald Hodges, and sophomore Shaq Lawson will be asked to step up.

Offensively, things are more settled. The Bills’ underrated offensive line remains mostly intact, other than Seantrel Henderson facing a five-game suspension to begin the season. Receiver Robert Woods bolted for a generous contract in St. Louis, and backup runner Mike Gillislee left for New England, but neither is a daunting proposition to replace.

At 7-9, Buffalo were a somewhat better team than their record would suggest. Their +21 point differential was good for seventh in the AFC, and significantly better than Miami, who finished ahead of them.

But with the defense likely to regress, what was already arguably an offense-first team will have to be even more so. The run game should continue to be one of the NFL’s best, but it will take more than that – improvement from Tyrod Taylor.

Over the past two seasons, Taylor has compiled a 94.2 QB rating, with 37 TDs and 12 INTs. If he regresses, which would surprise no one, the offense is simply not equipped to pick up the slack.

Prediction: 7-9. Against the Patriots, Taylor has shown poise, but also limitations when asked to do more than “run the offense.” I think the Bills should get worse but luckier, and wind up at the same record they had last year. Better than 7-9 would take either a surprising step forward from the QB, or effectively getting younger, and would be a welcome development were I a Bills fan.

People are always talking about the Celtics doing something. If it happens I’ll talk.

Like I’ve said, I really like Paul George. I think he’s a better player than Hayward, or Jimmy Butler for that matter. And I also think he can age much better. But I’ll believe it when I see it.Report

Andre Iguodala has become the foremost target in an attempt weaken the Golden State Warriors’ chokehold on the NBA, league sources have told ESPN.
The Minnesota Timberwolves, San Antonio Spurs, LA Clippers, Philadelphia 76ers, Orlando Magic, Brooklyn Nets and Utah Jazz are among the teams that are interested in the 2015 NBA Finals MVP, sources tell ESPN.Report

If you renounce Olynyk to fit Hayward, and trade Bradley, Crowder and Rozier to get George, you’re left with:
Zizic
Horford
George/Tatum
Hayward/Brown
Thomas/Smart
…..You badly need some veteran help in the frontcourt.
Some of the filling out could come internally. But you aren’t going to get that much out of Demetrius Jackson, Abdel Nader, signing Yabusele instead of stashing him again, the rookie Ojeleye, that German dude Theis. That’s a lot of unproven players to be relying on.Report

Bradley, Crowder and Rozier. Even at one year. Do you think that is the best the Pacers can get for George?Report

MrScratch
Member
Free agent

What are they going to get from anyone else?

The Lakers aren’t trading Ball or Ingram… maybe Zubac. Wizards aren’t trading Wall or Beal. Spurs, Cavs and Clippers really have nothing. they’d be looking to move a present piece to another team to acquire the assets the Pacers might take.

C’s could easily add some of their overload picks as well, but that really isn’t a bad deal for Pacers. They’d have Bradley-Ellis-Crowder- Jefferson-Young-Turner- Stephenson- Rozier-Robinson-Seraphin and $30M+ to add to that.Report

I think the best chance for the Celtics is through the draft and and free agency. I think they should get deeper without having to give anyone before the season. Sign Heyward and let the young players develop. Maybe trade Bradly during the season.Report

hugowasmyhomeboy
Member
Free agent

To fit Hayward on a max deal, you have to trade Bradley and renounce Olynyk.
I would be fine if they signed Hayward and that was it. But even if they get him, I wouldn’t assume that the Celtics are better in 2017 than they were in 2016.Report

Hugo, I guess the cap isn’t going up as much as the NBA thought so a max contract is a concern as well.Report

hugowasmyhomeboy
Member
Free agent

Yep. $99M.
Hayward is a great player but you know who else is? Avery Bradley. AB was probably the most consistent Celtic in the playoffs, if not their playoff MVP.
To me, if the Celtics get better while trading for Hayward, it’s not because they are that much better at SG. It’s because trading Bradley for a big man improved their frontcourt sizably, while Hayward offset the loss of Bradley.Report

hugowasmyhomeboy

Just going with what Scratch mentioned farther below.
Hayward and George are exclusive options, if you look past how big their names are and at team fit.
If you want to make a fun move that puts butts in the seats while your Brooklyn picks develop, you can sign Hayward in FA and keep Smart/Crowder around to offset IT and Hayward’s defensive deficiencies.
If you want to get George in Boston, you probably should move a top pick for a big, and shuffle things around to improve your roster fit.
Which is the better move? I don’t know.Report

MrScratch
Member
Free agent

Yeah, but one MLE rental could pretty much fill that. At that point, you’re not requiring a long-term/ top tier optionReport

memokerobi

I’d rather have them get George and let the past/future picks develop and maybe get involved with a future big name FA like KlayReport

If they can get a trade+extension worked out for George, that would be interesting. If not… stay the course. Not keen on Hayward.Report

MrScratch
Member
Free agent

What if they could get one year of George for Bradley (who they likely lose next year), Crowder and (say) Rozier. That leaves them the money for Hayward and really doesn’t damage them long term as (even if George bolts) they look to transition Tatum/ Brown into larger roles.Report

hugowasmyhomeboy
Member
Free agent

Yeah, I’d do that trade for George. But I would rather explore other moves rather than Hayward (the proposed Nuggets trade you’ve mentioned would make a lot of sense there).Report

MrScratch
Member
Free agent

Yeah, I’m not convinced that sinking max money into Hayward alone is the best solution. They need a 4/5. That’s where they were weak last year and could vastly improve.

But if they could hit a home run with George and Hayward, as long as they don’t compromise the future, I don’t see what they’d have to lose…Report

hugowasmyhomeboy
Member
Free agent

Yeah, there’s nothing wrong with signing Hayward. It’s just that I’d expect several smaller moves that are more supplementary could help you more.
With IT at PG, and Horford getting up there in age, and George carrying a load that precludes playing as hard as he’s capable on defense, you need a 3&D in there. Plus a big man. I don’t think counting on the rookie Zizic is a good idea.Report

MrScratch

Free agent

It was a very small sample, but in 55 attempts he completed 61.8% and 0 Ints. He ran 16 times for 83 yards (5.2). That’s pretty encouraging for a 3rd rounder who wasn’t expected to see the field at all.

Could he even be a Russell Wilson? Doubtful. But a Tyrod Taylor? Quite possible, imo.Report

Neil X
Member
Free agent

OK well I’ll buy that he might be able to be sort of a bottom tier starter.Report

hugowasmyhomeboy
Member
Free agent

It comes down to what you consider to be a “viable starter”. We have Tom Brady, so it seems like an immeasurable step down. But Tyrod Taylor is a starting QB in the NFL.Report

hugowasmyhomeboy
Member
Free agent

I think he could be a viable starter. I don’t think he could be a keeper, but as a stopgap guy? I could see that. Don’t turn it over and complete 60% of your passes and you’re an adequate stopgap guy.Report

dfwpatsfan
Member
Free agent

So is Osweiler, but Neil did mention ‘viable’. Not sure what viable would mean, capable of leading a team into the playoffs?Report

MrScratch
Member
Free agent
With their run game last year, a slightly better O Line, better health (especially at WR), more stability in Coaching Staff/ Front Office and if they had better defense, Tyrod Taylor could’ve gotten Buffalo into the playoffs. They were still 7-9 last year. And if you get there, you could get hot and win it. Plenty of average QB have SB rings. If you can run and shut the other team down, you can win a SB with a guy who doesn’t kill you. Tyrod Taylor won’t/ can’t throw the team on his back but the Bills lack of success… Read more »
HunterCenter

that’s a lot of ifs. but yes, I agree, Taylor would be adequate then.Report

MrScratch
Member
Free agent

But those “ifs” have converged plenty of times recently:

2000 Ravens
2001 Patriots
2002 Bucs
2005 Steelers
2007 Giants
20012 Ravens
2013 Seahawks

Too many times to just be a fluke. You’re going to need some sort re-invention post Brady in some way any how.Report

hugowasmyhomeboy
Member
Free agent

Yep, those ifs lining up is how you win the Super Bowl.Report

HunterCenter
Member
Free agent

as you said, great Ds are the common thread there.

the re-invention could be as simple as sliding Jimmy into an already stacked rosterReport

MrScratch
Member
Free agent

It could be… or it could be turning them into one of the several teams that have an exorbitantly paid QB to detriment of the rest of the roster and are usually borderline playoff teams who don’t go very far even when they make it every other year or so.Report

HunterCenter
Member
Free agent

I’m under the assumption that at some point, we are going to need to pay a QB a market-rate contract. Unless we draft (insert name of not yet known future surefire QB stud here who takes a hometown discount with his second contract) next yearReport

MrScratch
Member
Free agent

At some point, sure. But right now we don’t know much more about Garoppolo than we do Brissett.

And not only will we have to pay him top market, we’ll likely have to pay him top market to continue to warm the bench for (at least) another year.

Then hope at some point he’s actually worth it.Report

HunterCenter
Member
Free agent

so you think there is a good chance BB gets nothing for Jimmy G and lets him walk? I find that the least likely of multiple scenarios.Report

hugowasmyhomeboy
Member
Free agent

There’s a lot of ifs with anyone! That number of ifs is pretty good on the big picture.Report

HunterCenter
Member
Free agent

I’m specifically speaking to Scratch’s assertion that IF like 6 other things had gone much better for the Bills, then Tyrod could have lead them to the playoffs.Report

MrScratch
Member
Free agent

Mark Sanchez played in TWO AFCCG– and he was a guy who could single handedly kill a game for you.Report

HunterCenter
Member
Free agent

yeah, über fluky. and again, those were really good Jets defenses. So maybe that is really the only “if” a team needs.Report

Neil X
Member
Free agent

Could. And did, on many occasions.Report

Neil X
Member
Free agent

I completely agree about Taylor. He was NOT the problem in Buffalo. coach Feet’s inability to coach up the D was the main problem there.Report

HunterCenter

Free agent

Coach Feet would rather “kiss the toe rings”Report

HunterCenter
Member
Free agent

.500 or above?Report

HunterCenter
Member
Free agent

Assuming no major injuries to any of the QBs this season, and Brady does not decline, and Jimmy G and Brissett continue to improve (in practice and preseason), then in my opinion BB sticks with his mantra “if you don’t have the QB position well accounted for, you put the whole team at risk” and he does indeed commit $20+ million to the backup QB position in 2018. Team is young, cap space is there. Then he waits and sees again. Takes it year to year. Expensive, but the price is the only risk.Report

MrScratch
Member
Free agent

That would be really hard to pull off.Report

HunterCenter
Member
Free agent

it would be zag move in a league of zigs, I agree. but this entire offseason has been a zag for BB, so I think all bets are off at this point.Report

dfwpatsfan
Member
Free agent

If Brissett improves to a point where B considers him an effective #2, barring Brady’s injury or shock retirement, it’s tag and trade for Jimmy G.

EDIT: Ha ha I wrote cap and trade. Working on a carbon cap and trade paper.Report

HunterCenter
Member
Free agent

but aren’t cap-and-trade moves very rare, and very difficult to pull off? just doesn’t seem like it is a surefire thing to expect.Report

dfwpatsfan
Member
Free agent

Difficult but not impossible. BB has a great working relationship with some teams. If I were to predict Jimmy G would be a great fit with Chiefs. They have an “out” clause in Smiths contract, which would be only 3.6m in dead money, with 11.5m in savings (Smith is supposed to earn $14.5m in 2018).Report

HunterCenter
Member
Free agent

BB and Reid are definitely trade partners, historically. At least in drafts.Report

dfwpatsfan
Member
Free agent

If it’s the Chiefs, it would be Cassel situation all over again. So they might be cautious. But definitely they should not spend $14.5m on Smith. If they want to start winning playoff games.Report

HunterCenter

this will also depend on how fast Mahomes develops this seasonReport

dfwpatsfan

It just did not make sense to draft Mahomes in the first round giving so much up. In retrospect, Reid might not be interested in Jimmy G only to be desperate enough to make Mahomes work. Some articles claim that his upside is as high as McNabb. That would be stellar if it was so.Report

dfwpatsfan

In case anyone wants to cringe and read why Manning, and not Brady, is the GOAT.

I am yet to figure out why everyone spends so much time trying to correct someone’s opinion. At the end of the day, that person won’t change his opinion and you just come out feeling frustrated. No win situation.Report

Cringing at the reasons given. Some are valid…like Brady having BB, and also Peyton’s stats, but they don’t tell the whole story (i.e. loaded offense, and playing in a dome). They also try to compare Matt Cassel to Curtis Painter and how the Pats went 11-5 (they didn’t mention it was the same team that went 16-0),yet the Colts went 2-14 (but they didn’t say that the Colts tanked).Report

DNOM and I are trying to implement a “new” chat system on here, without Frank actually having to do anything. Do you want to test it out?

I already set it up and everything. All you need to do is make an account. It’ll take two minutes tops.Report

I understand and appreciate all the work you have put in- but I still would like to know that Frank either knows about it or has approved it- it’s just my personal feelings- nothing at all to do with you or DNOM.Report

The thing is, it’s not intended to replace the blog. It’s more like a “sister site”, where it’s way easier to talk to one another. It’s not even a blog either, like what Frank’s site is structured as – it’s an IM platform.

I’m asking around to see if our regulars will appreciate it. I have a feeling they will, but first I need to show them what it is.Report

Whatever your good intentions, the effect will be to remove traffic and conversation from this site. The only reason I stop by this site, is to chat with knowledgeable non trolling actual fans about NE sports related material. I don’t require a perfect system.

In short, I suspect that if successful, you’re going to just take half the population with you and destroy this little community.Report

Jdog Lemon Head

I don’t think we want, or should have a separate site at all. The only thing a separate site should be used for is to test other chat platforms, but ultimately, I think all we need is to embed a new chat system here…but it’s easier said than done.Report

Frank needs to try IntensedDebate or spot.IM for a new live comment system.
Here’s a good site for different comment systems:

Frank has kids and a lot of stuff on his plate. If anyone feels particularly strongly about the format of this site, the best thing they can do about it is offer to host it and set it up themselves. Until then, we’ve got what our anonymous benefactor Frankie has been able to set up for us.Report

As dp said, it’s not a slight on Frank. We know he’s super busy and we’re thankful for him and his hard work for getting this site together. We don’t want to replace this site but instead, add a different comment system. Unfortunately, I think Frank is the only one with the power to make the change. I’m just putting it out there for different comment platforms. If I had the power to change it, I would try, but since I don’t have the power, all I can do is suggest it. I see PPB is already trying new comment… Read more »

You know, any debate on what the best system is and what we should do going forward is NOT a slight on Frank but simple talk and debate.Report

PatriotPrideBoy

Yeah, most of us can agree the current comment system needs some fine-tuning.

Still, even Livefyre was a little restrictive with the amount of comments you could pump out. On gamedays, comments get to the thousands after the fact. That’s perhaps not a good thing since it gets hard to follow, and comments start loading at a slow pace… if that’s the type of speed we should expect regularly, then maybe it’d be good to have an IM client alongside a new commenting platform on the blog itself.Report

I *am* concerned how our threads will function during gamedays, though. The comments that pop up those days are often in the thousands. They’re so much more suited for a more IM service, like Discord.Report

It was my understanding that Frank and other site contributors are aware of this concern. They were looking into getting a new commenting system, but they just haven’t gotten around to addressing it. DNOM and I are planning on asking Frank about Discord, just FYI. When, I don’t know, but it’s a WIP.

To clarify, I think it’s a great platform with a lot of versatility. Sign-up is very easy too. It’s web-based although there is a Desktop version too. There’s even a Mobile app.Report

8. In past years, Patriots fans enjoyed attending the annual Hall of Fame induction before being invited inside Gillette Stadium for the annual night practice for season-ticket-holders and Foxborough residents. This year’s schedule is different. The team will have a morning practice Saturday, July 29, on the fields behind Gillette Stadium, and then former cornerback Raymond Clayborn will have his induction ceremony shortly after 12 p.m. ET that day. Fans are encouraged to attend the induction after practice, as it is free and open to all.-Mike Reiss And that way fans can get lunch at Patriots Place and stay much… Read more »
