Draft recap: DE

-by Hugo

Intro
Before the draft, the present author posted a big board of edge defenders on this blog. With the draft in the books, it seems like a good opportunity to revisit the Patriots’ selections that were on this board and elaborate on them.

Derek Rivers (83rd overall pick)
Draft position among edge defenders: 18
Position on pre-draft board: 8

What makes Rivers an intriguing prospect is the functional athleticism he showed both on and off the field. In college, he showed the burst and bend to race around an offensive tackle. He is on the small side for a defensive end, but his punch and pad level allow his strength to play up..

As far as weaknesses, Rivers has few. He does not have a deep bag of tricks, which is true of most college defensive ends. But the huge knock on Rivers was level of competition. In case you’ve lost track of all the conference realignments in college football, Youngstown State is not in the SEC.

Now, I understand the trepidation with a small school player. But here’s the thing: Rivers has passed all the tests he has been presented with. He set school records for sacks and tackles for loss. He feasted on Senior Bowl competition from bigger schools. And he put up combine numbers typical of a blue-chip pass rusher. In other words, he’s passed through a series of trials unscathed that virtually no one does. There’s something to be said for that.

In this observer’s opinion, getting Rivers at 83rd overall was a coup, and it will not take long for that to become evident. Expect him to get burn early in his career, as a situational player on passing downs.

Deatrich Wise Jr. (131st overall pick)
Draft position among edge defenders: 21
Position on pre-draft board: 9

A blue chip recruit with a dad who played in the NFL, Deatrich Wise did not do much on the field in his junior year to suggest that he can be an NFL edge rusher. His stats were fine, but he didn’t show the burst to threaten tackles or the coordination to string together rush moves while changing direction. He doesn’t shed blocks as effectively as he has the tools to, or read the run great, so it’s possible that he is not a plug-and-play run defender OR pass rusher.

Wise’s biggest positive in the present is his size. He is a hulking lineman with longer arms than Chandler Jones, who showed the ability in college to fight a double team. He has a huge frame and could probably end up at 300 pounds. This size, combined with the aforementioned lack of athleticism on the field, led most draft analysts to project him as a developmental 5-tech.

In addition, Wise had a very intriguing offseason. At the East-West Shrine Game, he was one of the standouts. He looked more fluid than he had been on the field for Arkansas, and lived in the West backfield. Then at the combine he put up remarkable agility and explosion numbers for his size.

This is where the pick becomes an interesting calculated risk. If Wise is the player he was at Arkansas, he is of some use to an NFL team. He can set a hard edge, and possibly rush the passer from inside. That is a player who is fungible but useful. Besides, it might not have been pretty but he DID produce in the SEC.

But… what if Wise is a baby giraffe growing into his body, and the pre-draft process was a glimmer of things to come? All of a sudden, you stole a prototypical NFL defensive end with pick 131.

Wise is much more of a projection pick than his new teammate. I wouldn’t expect him to even be active as a rookie. But he has tools that led me to rank him above many more polished defenders before the draft.

Recap
Nature is often described as cruel, and there is no creature that epitomizes this more so than sand tiger shark. A testament to the brutal efficiency of evolution, sand tiger shark embryos have been discovered to fight for birth in utero – the strongest and hardiest embryo eats the rest, and emerges alone.

By targeting a position of need with two rookies whose pedigree belies their draft position, the Pats front office has done a very good job of preparing for a defensive end to emerge and “survive.” Possibly both emerge, probably Rivers. But the Pats only need one of the two to do so. It is a difficult group to not get excited about.

Every once in a while you see a team constructed that you say wow, this team is gonna make some serious noise and the warriors are just that. Four guys in their twenties who want to play together and make history, unless LeBron joins the spurs I don’t see a single team that can really stop these guys from literally winning 3 or more rings in the next 5 years. They are truly going to be a dynastic force for years to come. Durant gets the last laugh (deservingly so) and the scary thing is they will only get better… Read more »

Lue is terrible, he was so lost last night when Warriors got that 28-4 run. On the other hand, Kerr always stopped the game when Cavs where trying to make a run and Warriors scored in every possesion after those timeouts.

Coaching and team playing was the biggest difference in the NBA FinalsReport

I dunno about coach killer, but he’s got some bizarro NBA Jerry Jones in him. Needs to have a say in a lot of things, so you end up giving him a players coach who doesn’t run the show.Report

I don’t agree that Warriors are unbeatable, a single trade can change it all.

For example: Kevin Love for Paul George

Cavs could become nasty on D, just with that tradeReport

hugowasmyhomeboy

The Cavs don’t have anything to add to a trade like that.
I could see them trying Love for Carmelo Anthony, and signing D-Wade. Idk for sure but I think they can offer him the taxpayer MLE.Report

Deadsmack #NoDaysOff

Melo doesn’t play defense. They need to add a 2 way player. They need to free Irving to offensive side (making guard the worst player opponent).
Pacers need to get something for Paul George or they will lose him without any assets added.Report

Cavs have nothing to offer. Indiana can get more attractive offers from most of the league, than Kevin Love and picks that are impossibly far in the future.Report

NHL: 25 or so team league (No favorite, few consistently top teams, playoffs are a crap shoot)
MLB: 10-15 team league (No favorite, plenty of parity, unpredictable playoffs)
NFL: 12 or so team league (Divisional favorites, consistently good teams, unpredictable playoffs – suspenseful each year to see who the Pats beat in the SB)Report

I don’t get the Kevin Durant commercial. No one was saying he sucked. Everyone thought he was soft and ruining the league for leaving a contending team to go to a stacked 73 win team that you just choked to after being up 3-1. Can’t wait till Cavs-Warriors IV next year! What a joke that league is right now.Report

what annoys me about the current NBA is that all other teams GMs are building their teams to compete after the current Cavs and Warriors rosters have disbanded, not even really attempting to truly compete with them currently. So defeatist. Makes for a very very boring season and League.Report

hugowasmyhomeboy

Kawhi Leonard getting hurt robbed us of the most competitive basketball we’d get in the playoffs, unfortunately.
The Spurs were really a better team than the Cavs.
Durant going to Golden State was lame, and I’m still salty he chose them over us. But I have to say, after seeing what he looks like on a team that doesn’t have Russell Westbrook, it’s pretty obvious Westbrook was holding that team back.
When he left I was saying “why not just stay?” Now I get it.Report

MrLucky

It’s impossible to compete. The Warriors drafted 3 top 20 players and signed probably the best and they are all in their prime. It’s an all-star team playing against regular teams, making it unwatchable for every fan base except 1. They would have won it all without Durant too.Report

hugowasmyhomeboy

The lack of drama sucks. But damn, if sports teams are paintings the Warriors are a Sistine chapel. To draft all those guys, have Curry and Thompson and Green on contracts like that, scrounge up a bench the way they have….
They play like a team too. The Cavs are talented but giving up layups because they don’t get back on defense, or miscommunicating. Even when the Warriors aren’t making shots, they never falter on defense.Report

MrLucky

Ya it’s pretty much the perfect collaboration of players to put together. Still a bad look for the NBA. It’s the only league where the best team pretty much always wins – last year being an exception. Like there’s no way the Warriors don’t win again next year barring injuries.Report

Klay Thompson actually had a disaster finals if you look at the shooting numbers. But he continued guarding Irving and LeBron, and made their lives difficult. Held his own against Kevin Love in the post a few times even.
How many NBA scorers can do that? Certainly not Irving. They’re aggravatingly good but they are a T E A M.Report

i watched about 3 quarters tonight. The first time i watched this year. The Cavs are a horrendous defensive team. Didnt seem like they were even trying.

Looked like their game plan was
-don’t play defense
-don’t try and rebound at all
-and isolate one guy with the ball and see if he can score while 4 other guys stand around and dont crash the boards

I think i will go back to not watching. That was uglyReport

Deadsmack #NoDaysOff

I agree, Cavs have maybe more talent individually than the Warriors, but they are not a real team.
On the other hand, Warriors are a team, they really shared the ball and they have periods in every game where they play great team defense, lots of rotations and defensive help and that’s when they are really dangerous because they feed their offense with fast breaks.Report
