2017 Mock Contest Results

-by DNOMN8R314

Well, that was the most eventful uneventful draft weekend in recent memory. Or was it the most uneventful eventful draft weekend?

Either way, New England started Thursday night with six picks, and through trades, ended up with four selections and ex-Chiefs tight end James O’Shaughnessy. Of those four selections, only two (Derek Rivers and Deatrich Wise) were on our mocks.

However, the Patriots just announced their 19-player UDFA class, and those players also count towards the results. As I had said in the rules, guessing a UDFA correctly gets you half-credit, but if you guessed the player would be a UDFA, it counts as full credit. Only one person did the latter.

But enough prelude: it’s now time to announce the winner.

Last year’s champion, Hugo was my homeboy, successfully defended his title with three correct players – Wise, Harvey Langi (undrafted), and Rivers – on his list, scoring 20 total points.

(However, if the compilation mock were entering, it would have won in a landslide with 31 points, as three of the top four compilation players – the same three on Hugo’s mock – ended up Patriots.)

Hugo used a specific variation of the “shotgun” mock where he selected 11 players as possible third-round selections, a strategy which surprised me when I first saw his mock. However, it worked, and for the second year in a row, Hugo wins the grand prize of nothing.

The battle for second place was very close, but BoSoxJim claimed the silver medal with 15 points. Jim only chose Wise from among the four draft picks, but the UDFA combination of Langi and Austin Carr pushed his score to second.

Tying for third with 14 points each were evaldes101993 and Mattsky. Matt took the early lead, earning 10 points for the Rivers selection plus three for the correct round, but only added UDFA Max Rich for another point. In contract, evaldes did not get any of the four draft picks correct, but correctly picked Langi and Damarius Travis, rightly predicting that the latter would go undrafted.

Coming in fifth was DNOMN8R314 with 13 points. I had Rivers and Langi correct, but had the latter ranked much higher, so I only got half-points for the BYU linebacker.

And bringing up the rear was dp73, who gambled that early-round picks would fall to the third or that the Patriots would trade into earlier rounds, a gamble that did not pay off and left him with no points.

Well done everyone. Now it’s time for the pre-pre-pre-preseason to start, which means hype, excessive hype, and fantastic amounts of hype.

Mocks can be found here. A list of all players guessed in our mocks can be found here.

Thanks for playing.

I’ve also had them come from chile ristras, took forever to get rid of the stupid moths. Got rid of the ristras, found their way into the flour. Got rid of the flour, found their way into the pasta. Got rid of the pasta, found their way into the bagged dried chiles, ate holes in the plastic. Finally threw out everything in the pantry. Years later bought another ristra in New Mexico, moths were all over the car before we even got home. NO MORE RISTRAS!Report

Doug Moore ✔ @DMooreNFL
So — if Blount signs w/ another team before 7/22, #Patriots still eligible for comp. pick. After 7/22, he can sign only w/ NE until wk 10.

That doesn’t mean the Pats want to sign him after July 22, it just means that they want to retain his rights through Week 10 in case someone goes down. Tough break for Blount. You have to wonder how much enthusiasm he would have for a delayed return to the team that treated him this way.Report

hugowasmyhomeboy
Member
Free agent

Ya it sucks for Blount. The dude played for near-minimum money a few years in a row, he did everything the Pats asked him to. He got 18 TDs last year, and they not only sign two other younger guys, but they’ll make as much in a year as he did in three. But that’s NFL football – it’s about building the best machine.Report

problem was he is not getting any offers. I do not think it will hurt his chances as much since this is for next year and a team that wants to sign him will not be worried about that ..

sucks though…Report

I am not sure that the Pats are ‘quite ruthless’ as suggested in the Twitter feed here. They always wanted Blount back, but in a diminished role, for less dollars. He didn’t accept and no other team showed up to sign him. So now New England either gets a late pick or a quality part-time backup.Report

hugowasmyhomeboy
Member
Free agent

I’d say it’s pretty ruthless. I get the rationale, but it is.
Now he has no guaranteed money, AND the comp pick debit hanging around his neck, hurting his market value.
The Pats won’t give him a new contract AND they’re making it harder for him to get one elsewhere.
Even if he signs his tender, what kind of comfort is that? Gillislee, Burkhead, White, Lewis are all under contract.Report

@RapSheet LeGarrette Blount’s can sign with a team now, but it would hurt that team’s comp pick formula. If he doesn’t by July 22, he’ll be a Patriot.
There’s the other shoe, it would count if another team signs him.
I get the rationale, but man this sucks for Blount.Report
