Don’t Try This At Home: Hugo’s 2017 Edge Defender Board

-by Hugo

[EDITOR’S NOTE SHAMELESS PLUG: Don’t forget to send in your mocks before the start-of-draft deadline!]

Tier 1 (approx. picks 1-15)

Myles Garrett
Like Mario Williams, Garrett might not fulfill the expectations that will follow him, but he is a great prospect and will be drafted as such. In the NFL he should move around the line often. Asking him to rush from right end over and over is a waste of his special combination of burst and sudden power. I do wish he’d use his hands with more urgency. He will need to adjust to the jump in competition.

Taco Charlon
Blessed with a rare combination of size and agility, Charlton reminds me of NFL star Jason Pierre-Paul. His college play can be nitpicked easily but I think the NFL should and will focus on what he can do in their systems.

Solomon Thomas
With his combination of linear athleticism, handwork, and nastiness, Thomas reminds me of Patriots breakout star Trey Flowers. He should be a valuable player in the NFL, whose contributions go beyond sacks. Concerns about his “ceiling” exist but should not be taken too seriously.

Tier 2 (approx. picks 16-45)

Malik McDowell
Despite possessing great talent, it is hard to endorse a player who reportedly freelanced often, clashed with coaches, did not play hard in his final season, AND reportedly bombed his offseason interviws/workouts. But McDowell is the only player in draft who can win from every gap. He will be a huge risk/reward pick and needs to go to the right team.

Derek Barnett
Barnett is a player who does not profile well in many respects, but produced at a high level in the SEC against the best talent. He turns small windows into angles to the quarterback, and plays with rare every-down intensity for a high profile D1 pass rusher. There are red flags, but I am willing to bet on him.

Daeshon Hall
Hall is a traditional RDE in the mold of Chandler Jones and Ezekiel Ansah. For a supposed underachiever, his college play is promising and his frame looks like it should support solid strength gains in the NFL. If the Patriots add him in the 3rd round I think it will be looked back on as a feather in their cap.

Jonathan Allen
The combination of concerns about Allen’s upside (traits) and downside (injuries) makes it hard to justify drafting him as high as he’s been bandied about in the draft media. That said, he is young and technically proficient, and should contribute in a DT/DE role like fellow Alabama alum Wallace Gilberry.

Tier 3 (approx. picks 46-75)

Derek Rivers
Rivers is a small-school player who showed functional skills in school, set school records, and who meets every athletic cut-off you could ask for in an edge rusher. He is stronger than he looks at the point of attack, and the only thing standing between him and the first round is the fact that he went to Youngstown State.

Deatrich Wise Jr.
Wise has prototypical size and measurables, NFL bloodlines and youth on his side, and appears to be still growing into his body. He should be a better pro than collegiate player, as his weakness (screaming off the edge) becomes a strength, and as he grows into his body.

Jordan Willis
Heavier-footed than his spectacular combine would suggest, Willis is the enigma of the class. His tape is underwhelming but he was numerically very productive. Players who are both productive in college and impressive athletes make for the most interesting potential busts.

T.J. Watt
Watt, destined to be overdrafted because of who his brother is, looks like a fine prospect in his own right. He is a jack-of-all-trades edge player with better athleticism than production who needs to go to a team who asks edge rushers to do many things. I’m not sure that the Patriots, with similar players in McClellin and Van Noy in hand, will sniff around him too much.

Tier 4 (approx. picks 76-105)

Tanoh Kpassagnon
Kpassagnon is an intriguing talent who will have to learn how to play within his giraffe-like frame. He possesses intriguing ability to win the edge with his quickness, flexibility, and power. However, despite his brute strength, he does not look ready to assume a run stopping, strong-side end role – absent improvement he’d give you absolutely nothing. Low floor, high ceiling type pick.

Dawaune Smoot
A senior with a subpar athletic profile, Smoot is the kind of edge player who could be available to the Patriots early on day 3. He is physical, and reminds me a bit of Jabaal Sheard. I think Smoot’s best position might be 3-technique defensive tackle on passing downs. On early downs he would be a rotational edge defender.

Tim Williams
Williams was a fearsome pass rusher in the SEC, but beyond the character concerns that have been floated in the media, whether or not he has translatable skills is a real concern. He needs to go to a team who will allow him to play wide and scream after the passer, or be the fifth man on the line on every down. He has a knack for stringing together rush moves and could overcome his athletic skillset to thrive in the NFL.

Tier 5 (draftable day 3 players to priority free agents)

Vince Biegel
Playing across T.J. Watt, Biegel has been somewhat of a forgotten man. He can both rush the passer and drop into coverage, and while his ability to rush the passer is limited, he profiles neatly as a role player in a linebacker-heavy defense.

Ryan Anderson
Anderson is a limited standup edge defender, who will benefit from specialization in the NFL. He sets a strong edge and runs well. However, his issues in coverage make it difficult to expect him to fill an every-down linebacker slot.

Charles Harris
Reliant on getting a quick jump, Harris is an underpowered rush end will likely be overwhelmed by NFL responsibilities. His technique is excellent and he should get a chance to contribute immediately for the team that drafts him.

Carl Lawson
While highly productive in the SEC, Lawson is sluggish and lacks variety in his rush repertoire. He has also been dogged by injuries throughout his collegiate career. There are more pro-ready options and more intriguing talents.

Trey Hendrickson
Hendrickson is a relentless edge rusher who would fit the Pats defense as a 3rd down specialist. He has nice quickness but does not show power or the ability to win with his hands on film. His inability to match up physically with opponents at the NFL level could render his quickness a moot point.

Tier 6 (priority free agents or undraftable)

Avery Moss
Moss was kicked out of Nebraska and went to Youngstown State to play for Bo Pelini. He looks the part of an NFL edge rusher and tested decently, but he was beaten soundly too often on film to warrant a long look.

Darius English
English has great athleticism, and runs like a linebacker in space. He is not as physical as one would like to see from a developmental project. What makes him a possibility late in the draft is the potential to cover tight ends, which is rare for a pass rusher. However, with his lack of physicality it is hard to see him carving out the spot he’d need on the back of a 53-man roster.

Takkarist McKinley
McKinley does not appear to meet the base functional requirements for an edge player in a 4-man front, nor does he appear to possess the traits that would allow him to refine his pass rushing arsenal. And his disastrous Wonderlic of 5 makes the prospect of trying to convert him to LB unappealing. I consider McKinley undraftable.

Carroll Phillips
Phillips was ultra-productive in college, but reviewing his “tape” it is hard to see that continuing at the next level. He is a run-and-chase player rather than a down lineman, but has zero experience dropping into coverage. His best chance at an NFL career will be starting on special teams, and developing from there.

Devonte Fields
Once a highly-regarded collegiate talent, Fields bounced around the FBS due to legal issues, and does not play football at nearly a level that would make you overlook it. He is an elephant outside linebacker in a 3-4 style front who rushes the passer.

Interesting, last year the worst game by Cooks was against the Rams which Payton said the lack of any targets on Cooks was related on how they were defending him.
But even so, Saints found a way to put 49 points on them. That’s the kind of effect i expect it to happen on the Pats, you just can’t defend everybody on our offense.Report

Best part of the article: Belichick then told a story about how the entire NFL universe believed that the Patriots would select Michigan wide receiver David Terrell with the sixth overall pick in the 2001 NFL draft. Belichick had vowed not mention to anyone, even Joel, with whom he was exceptionally close and unusually trusting in, the true apple of his eye: Georgia defensive tackle Richard Seymour. Belichick explained to his Patriots inner circle that Seymour’s name was not to be uttered to anyone outside of the building prior to the draft. On Draft Day that year, Belichick picked up… Read more »

Prototypical Patriots WRs in this year’s draft include a late-bloomer, a Saban guy, and a four-year “teams” captain. http://www.csnne.com/new-england-patriots/prototypical-patriots-hansens-size-elusiveness-would-be-handful

These are the WRs that Phil Perry included in the article (listed in order of how I ranked them):

If you draft the guy higher than the 6th, then you probably aren’t exposing him to waivers.
And if it’s one of the 1st three (or #2-4), then what matters is that he’ll probably be with you for years to come as a primary target on offense.Report

I was surprised that the Saints wouldn’t be interested in trading for Butler for #42 and #76 as reported.

At this time I don’t think the Patriots will get a first round 2017 pick for Butler.

Rotoworld: Saints GM Mickey Loomis said there hasn’t been “any discussion for quite some time” on trading for Malcolm Butler.
The Saints haven’t ruled out a Butler deal, but this falls in line with previous reports it’s highly unlikely. With one of the deeper drafts for corners, the Saints are “leaning toward” keeping both their first round picks. Barring a late trade, Butler should play out the final year of his Patriots contract.

We have a cable sports network here with 5 channels and they show sports events or repetitions 90% of the time.
Of ourse, soccer is the main sport here, but they show portuguese, UEFA competitions, english, spanish, italian, french, dutch, russian, brazilian, argentinian, etc championships
Plus they also show other sports like NBA, NFL, NHL, UFC, Golf, Tennis, other domestic and european competitions in multiple sports.

It is 5 channels of live sports (or repetitions) most of the time for a little bit more than $ 30,00, not much talkReport

With the internet, social media, the ability of pro sports leagues to function as their own media, sites like Sports Reference, etc…. In a different environment, having the reporter or analyst meant the ability to produce and distribute (newspaper or TV) exclusive content. In this environment, asking ESPN to just report on sports doesn’t help – if you want ESPN to be another PatsPulpit, why am I going to go to ESPN and not just go to PatsPulpit? The fact that ESPN got cornered into the “shouting match shows” niche reflects that. ESPN can’t give you news someone else can’t.… Read more »

They’ve been E! spn for a long time. The days of covering the sports for the sake of the game is over. It’s about creating media sensations, good or bad, so that they can milk out all the possible advertising.Report

Dingo
Member

My only beef with them is that they tend to create news, rather than reporting it. They also became shills for the professional and collegiate industries (Deflategate, the non-reporting of FSU’s interference in the Jameis Winston rape allegation, etc.). While they are not the only sports entities to act unprofessionally, they have been the flagship.Report

hugowasmyhomeboy
Member

Well, I’d argue that creating news is part of surviving in the present sports media market. Because 1) they’re blood bound to the sports who they televise and 2) they don’t have a distinct product for their talk shows without creating one.Report

I think Twitter is what has essentially killed off ESPN’s draw. Twitter does all the up-to-the minute announcements that you don’t need ESPN for the info anymore.Report

HunterCenter

so just concentrate on broadcasting live sporting events (and the advertising), not the “news” portion of it. And improve your online streaming systems.Report

hugowasmyhomeboy

And herein lies the core issue – with cord cutters (and, more accurately, people who will never get a cord to begin with), sports leagues can go straight to the fan. ESPN have to position themselves as the middle man, AND make it profitable.Report
