A Brief History of Bill Belichick’s Patriots Draft Reaches

-by DNOMN8R314

One of the most popular Patriots draft tropes is that Bill Belichick will inevitably use a high draft pick on a lower-projected player, resulting in mass flip-outs and complaints about “Belichick the GM.” While some of those reaches have demonstrated why that player was ranked so low, others have resulted in long-term contributors and even Foxboro stars.

This is not an exhaustive list. I have only been following the draft closely for a few years, so I’m sure there are players I’ve missed. But here is a sampling of ten draft reaches and how they panned out in New England, ranked from least to most effective.

10. Geneo Grissom, DE, 2015: It’s well-known that Belichick loves versatile players, which explained his choice of Grissom in the third round in 2015. But Grissom never showed the talent to earn a regular role on defense, being relegated to special teams for his rookie season and actually being cut after training camp last year, only to return via the practice squad.

9. Jermaine Cunningham, DE/OLB, 2010: Cunningham was selected in the second round one spot ahead of his more highly-touted Florida edge compatriot Carlos Dunlap. While career Bengal Dunlap has been named to two Pro Bowls, Cunningham only lasted three years in New England, never earning more than a part-time role after his rookie year, and is the second-most notable member of the Patriots’ 2010 draft class to be arrested.

8. Tavon Wilson, S, 2012: Wilson was the first in the subtrope of Belichick draft reaches being safeties, and he unfortunately codified the trope of those reaches only contributing on special teams. After becoming a starter by default during the start of his rookie year, the second-rounder’s repeated errors led to his role being reduced to a core-four special teamer, although he has regained defensive time after signing with Detroit. Fun fact: Wilson is the most recent Patriot to return an interception for a touchdown.

7. Jordan Richards, S, 2015: Following in Wilson’s footsteps was second-rounder Richards, who has yet to earn a regular defensive role as Patrick Chung has been entrenched as the starting strong safety since his 2014 return to New England. Richards’ role last year was exclusively on special teams, but he gets the spot over Wilson due to still being on the team. (Now that I’ve typed that, expect to see an announcement about his release….)

6. Jacoby Brissett, QB, 2016: While many predicted New England would draft a quarterback last year, few thought it would be in the third round and few thought it would be Brissett, a dual threat as opposed to a pocket passer. Brissett played in three games last year with two starts after Tom Brady was suspended and Jimmy Garoppolo was injured, splitting his starts and receiving praise from his teammates and coaches. However, Belichick’s reluctance and refusal to trade Garoppolo this offseason suggests he does not think Brissett is yet ready to take over as Brady’s backup. That said, Brissett performed better than expected in 2016 and he should build on that this offseason.

5. Vincent Valentine, DT, 2016: Five picks after Brissett, Belichick made another surprise by selecting Valentine, whose stock was low due to concerns about his weight, conditioning, and work ethic. But Valentine played well as the third member of the defensive tackle rotation, playing well both against the run and penetrating the pocket. During preseason, Valentine became the heir to the “Big Vince” moniker; while he still has a long way to go if he hopes to reach Wilfork levels, Valentine last year looked like a good NFL lineman.

4. Stevan Ridley, RB, 2011: Belichick double-dipped at the running back position on Day 2 of the 2011 draft, selecting Shane Vereen (whom many projected as an early-round Patriots selection) in the second round and Ridley (not so much) in the third. Both backs lasted their four-year rookie contracts in Foxboro before departing in free agency, and while Vereen steadily rose in prominence as the team’s pass-catching back, culminating in 11 receptions in Super Bowl XLIX, Ridley burst onto the scene in 2012, taking over as lead back from BenJarvus Green-Ellis and rushing for 1,263 yards and 12 touchdowns. Unfortunately, injuries and fumbles led to Ridley’s losing his #1 back status, and he has been a journeyman since then.

3. Duron Harmon, S, 2013: With cornerback-turned-safety Devin McCourty as a starter since his first-round selection in 2010, Belichick enhanced the Scarlet Knights defensive backfield by selecting cornerback Logan Ryan with the 83rd pick in 2013, an expected third-round selection, then surprised by taking his Rutgers teammate Harmon eight choices later. (Harmon’s choice was such a surprise that networks ran… “underwhelming” clips.) But Harmon quickly became the third safety with a knack for hauling in deep interceptions, his talent at free safety allowing McCourty to be more versatile. Harmon re-signed with the Patriots on a four-year contract this offseason, showing how much of a key member of the secondary he has become.

2. Sebastian Vollmer, T, 2009: After not being invited to the combine, New England surprised by drafting Vollmer in the second round. All he did was anchor the right tackle position for most of his eight seasons as a Patriot. Injuries and the eventual emergence of Marcus Cannon led to the end of his Foxboro tenure this offseason, but the German will always be appreciated as a key member of this decade’s offensive line.

1. Logan Mankins, G, 2005: The prevailing wisdom in 2005 was that Belichick did not value the guard position enough to spend a high pick on an interior lineman. Naturally, Belichick subverted that by selecting Mankins, projected to be selected in the third round, with the 32nd overall pick. For nine seasons, Mankins was not only the starting left guard but one of the attitude-setters of the entire New England squad. While the big guard never won a ring in New England, the Patriots claiming the Lombardi Trophy in the seasons before and after his tenure, Mankins is still one of the best linemen – arguably the best – from the Belichick era in Foxboro.

Happy Easter, everyone! In celebration, there are three Easter eggs hidden in this article. Good luck with the hunt!

Lloyd’s mother, Ursula Ward, said Friday that a jury found Hernandez guilty of killing her son and that’s good enough for her.
All first-degree murder convictions in Massachusetts trigger an automatic appeal. Hernandez’s appeal was still in its early stages when he hanged himself.
Ward said Hernandez’s suicide in prison has reopened old wounds and that she is reliving the pain of her son’s murder.
“I lost my son, the love of my life,” Ward told reporters. “I’ll never ever see him again.”

Shaw is similar to Brock Holt. A useful utility player that will play at an all-star level for small stretches but has not shown the ability to extrapolate it over a whole season. I’m not a big fan of DD either but I have to give him credit for some of his moves. Sale has been incredible and he got him without having to give up a starting MLB player. Moreland has been a very good LH 1B and leads the majors in doubles. Kimbrell still gives me pause but has been very good this year. If only he hadn’t… Read more »

There is a ton of time for both the Sale and Kimbrel moves to go south. Barring something unexpected happening, Margot will be a high end outfielder in the big leagues. He could likely end up being a better player than Jackie Bradley Jr. That trade is going to be lost on value, hopefully we can win it on timing by getting a WS banner. Sale is incredible, no doubt. The problem is the move was extremely risky. And that hasn’t changed. But as far as things DD has done I have the least issue with Sale because… cost and… Read more »

If they win a WS with Kimbrel and Sale playing major roles then idgaf. Unless Sale blows out his elbow and Moncada turns into Mike Trout I’m fine with that deal. I was ok with giving up Margot because of the depth in the OF. The Espinoza trade was inexcusable.Report

I don’t know who said Pats have easiest schedule, it’s going to be tough. The first half is average, but KC, NO, CAR and ATL will challenge them for sure. The second half is insane with 5 of 6 road games, including at DEN & MEX. The only reprieve is the last 2 of the season at home against BUF & NYJ who will be out of playoff race, but looking to ruin Pats seeding and hurt players…

Agree, but based on coaching and core players – there’s teams you can count on playing tough and matching up. But to your point, I’m more worried about Raiders than the Broncos next year. And I could see Bucs being very tough, not to mention Dolphins taking another step up.Report

That was never the question. Any player under contract can be traded unless he has a “no trade close” in it. Although, to follow the letter of the RFA rules, a team is not supposed to tender a player just to restrict his movements in order to trade him.

This is a trade I could get behind: Saints 32nd and 42nd for Butler+Pats 96. Saints get a stellar starting caliber QB, and Pats gets back on the first and second round of the draft. Saints might view this as too rich, but this is not as rich as giving up the 11th round pick.Report

Most likely Butler is only going to be here for one more year and probably unhappy. It is not a good situation and I like Butler and would like to keep him but is the situation that the Patriots are in.Report

I really hope he stays, plays well, and we give him a contract he likes.Report

Losing Butler is an automatic loss for me.Report

there’s no such thing as automatic. what if we net 3 players for him who DO all pan out, and we get younger, and it is all cheaper on the cap, and our DB units don’t miss a beat?Report

Ditto for Pats/Bills.

It is peculiar.

But it’s 4 road games in 5 weeks, bookended by road games in Denver and Pittsburgh, that really irritates me.Report

Actually, it’s 5 road games in 6 weeks.Report

another feeble attempt at parity. Pats will overcome it, as they typically do.Report

All those teams are going to have trouble stoping the Pats period. Brandin Cooks evolves this offense with Gronk and others. That schedule doesnt scare me. Our D is going to have to be better though, which I am confident will happen.Report

Looks like the nfl is still trying to stick it to the Pat’s in the second half of the season.Report

Nice placement of the bye week. But I don’t like the 5 out of 6 stretch of road games in the 2nd half of the season.Report

@NEPD_Loyko
The way @mlombardiNFL is gushing over Adoree Jackson, you best believe he’s on Belichick’s radar if #Patriots get back into 1st round.

This will make puppydog’s day!Report
