Bill Belichick’s Top 10 Patriots Seventh-Round Picks

-by DNOMN8R314

Since the Patriots are currently without a first- or second-round pick in this year’s NFL draft, any contributions from their rookie class will have to come from solid late-round selections. Of course, New England’s depth chart is solid enough that it’s unlikely many rookies will have to contribute right away, but every class produces some late-round gems. Here are my choices for Bill Belichick’s best final-round picks as the selector-in-chief of the Patriots.

10. Malcolm Williams, S, 2011: Yes, pickings are slim in the seventh round. Williams makes the list by virtue of having one special teams tackle in Super Bowl XLVI.

9. Darryl Roberts, CB, 2015: Roberts spent his rookie year on IR and was released during final cuts after a tight cornerback competition. He has since caught on with the Jets and started two games in 2016.

8. Michael Buchanan, DE, 2013: Buchanan made the 53-man roster out of camp after a strong 2013 preseason, but in his two years as a Patriot, he only recorded seven tackles, two sacks, and a fumble recovery.

7. Brandon Deaderick, DE, 2010: The latest-drafted member of the massive ’10 Patriots draft class to make the roster, Deaderick lined up all across the defensive front during his three seasons in Foxboro, recording five sacks and forcing two fumbles.

6. Patrick Pass, FB, 2000: Pass spent seven years in New England and was used as a running back, fullback, and kick returner. He never put up massive stat lines or made spectacular plays, but the versatile Pass is one of the select group of Patriots to earn three rings with the team.

5. Tully Banta-Cain, LB, 2003: Banta-Cain spent two stints as a Patriot spanning a total of six years, earning a pair of Super Bowl rings in the process. After two years in San Francisco, Banta-Cain returned to New England for the 2009 season and recorded a career-high 10 sacks.

4. Alfonzo Dennard, CB, 2012: After punching a policeman, Dennard tumbled down the draft until the Patriots scooped him up in the final round. The talent that had him projected in the early rounds emerged mid-season, as Dennard helped stabilize the secondary as the #2 cornerback opposite newly-acquired Aqib Talib. But after poor play in 2014, Dennard was relegated to the bench. He ended his three-year Patriots career with five interceptions, along with two in the playoffs.

3. David Givens, WR, 2002: Until the drafting of Malcolm Mitchell in 2016, Patriots fans always pointed to the 2002 combo of Deion Branch (second round) and Givens as the last wide receivers Belichick had drafted who actually fit in New England’s system and were able to earn Tom Brady’s trust. Givens’ reception totals rose in each of his four years in Foxboro, but it was in the playoffs that his value was really shown. In three years of postseason play, Givens set the team record for touchdown receptions, reaching the end zone seven times. (Rob Gronkowski has since broken that record with nine.) A terrible injury forced Givens into early retirement after he signed with the Titans in 2006 free agency, but he has always been one of the most valued and underrated contributors of the early ’00s champions.

2. Matt Cassel, QB, 2005: Did you realize that Cassel is still in the league? Surprise; he’s currently Marcus Mariota’s backup in Tennessee. But for the first three years of his career, Cassel was Brady’s backup, and a much-maligned one at that. Fans and media alike were calling for his release after a poor 2008 preseason, but Belichick chose to retain him as the #2 quarterback. Naturally, after Brady went down with a torn ACL in the opening game, Cassel led New England to an 11-5 record the rest of the way. He may have had only one impactful season as a Patriot, but he has parlayed that (along with a Pro Bowl nod in Kansas City) into an 11-years-and-counting career.

1. Julian Edelman, WR, 2009: Everyone knows that Edelman was a quarterback in college who has turned into the Patriots’ #1 wideout and one of Brady’s most trusted targets. But we tend to gloss over the stretch from 2010-12 where Edelman was not a major part of the offense, even filling in at cornerback for a large chunk of the 2011 campaign, and many questions were raised about whether Edelman had a role in the offense. Although it was Danny Amendola who was widely expected to be the heir to the departing Wes Welker in 2013, it turned out to be Edelman who put up then-career-high stats and became first the new slot receiver, then the new top wideout. Entering his ninth season, Number 11 may be behind Brandin Cooks as the Hot Explosive Receiver in New England, but Edelman, a.k.a. Squirrel, a.k.a. Minitron, will be as determined and driven as ever.

Just to finish my thought on Phil Jackson: it’s so bogus that he’s publicly telling Melo to move on from the Knicks. If you want that kind of control over your players, maybe don’t offer them full no-trade clauses? You’re supposedly a genius basketball guy and have more rings than fingers. Try being creative and applying that genius instead of whining to the media. Unless your fastball is really that far gone, in which case maybe YOU should be moving on.Report

On the topic of Rooney, by all accounts he was a terrific guy, and certainly a huge light in the NFL constellation. I’m willing to take that at face value, though he may have harbored a slight holier-than-thou attitude towards the Patriots. It is amazing that the Stillers were founded in 1933 (as the Pittsburgh Pirates) by Dan Rooney’s father, Art, and now Art Rooney II will continue the legacy. No other team has that continuity. (OK, the Packers have been publicly owner for longer, but, they were begun by Curly Lambeau and a meat packing company underwrote the enterprise… Read more »

As for Hutson: “Adding cheese to hamburgers became popular in the late-1920s to mid-1930s, and there are several competing claims as to who created the first cheeseburger. Lionel Sternberger is reputed to have introduced the cheeseburger in 1926 at the age of 16 when he was working as a fry cook at his father’s Pasadena, California sandwich shop, “The Rite Spot”, and “experimentally dropped a slab of American cheese on a sizzling hamburger.” An early example of the cheeseburger appearing on a menu is a 1928 menu for the Los Angeles restaurant O’Dell’s which listed a cheeseburger smothered with chili… Read more »

According to Wikipedia, the packing company did not own them, they just gave them some operating capital in exchange for naming rights and promotional considerations. The team has been publicly funded in part as early as 1923, and fully public for a long time.Report

I served on a jury on a case that could’ve put the guy away for a very long time. I know a few of us thought guy was guilty of trying to blow up a car (unsuccessful) but there wasn’t definitive video proof that it was him. hugowasmyhomeboy

I think the summary of it is that in signing his extension, Hernandez represented that there were no reasons he wouldn’t be able to play it out, and murdering people before signing could be construed as him lying when he signed it.
The murder of Odin Lloyd was after the extension, so the terms of it aren’t tied in anyway to whether or not he murdered Lloyd.Report

Is anyone else interested in the fact that the Aaron Hernandez jury has been deliberating 6 days now without a verdict? Odd.Report

I haven’t followed it. I have only read some headlines. He is serving a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole already.Report

Yeah, it does seem to be kind of a waste of time and money to try him for more murders. But maybe he could actually somehow eventually be released if they didn’t bother to convict him of these two additional murders.Report

I didn’t pay attention to the trial but I read something about how the jury wanted clarification about the witnesses plea deal and the judge said you’re not supposed to rely solely on a witness who’s been granted immunity (referring to Bradley.) If there isn’t other compelling evidence, maybe they don’t convict him.Report

Maybe he’ll be found not guilty and then he can re-join the Pats. Oh, wait……Report

I noticed that too. It strikes me as if they’ve been effectively convinced a not guilty verdict is appropriate (presumably owing to technicalities) and are hesitating to deliver it.Report

Scorpion stings passenger on United Airlines flight

The same day a passenger was infamously dragged off a United plane in Chicago, a man on a United flight from Houston to Calgary was allegedly stung by a scorpion.
The venomous creature fell from an overhead bin and landed on Richard Bell’s hair as he was eating lunch Sunday in his business class seat, according to his wife Linda.

So far this year, more than 1/3 of the plate appearances are ending with a HR, walk, or strikeout. 11% increase since 1976, or more than 1 in 10.Report

Since today appears to be RB thoughts day…. He might be a worse person, but Mixon is a better RB than Fournette. Curious to see how fans/the media handles his NFL success. Idk if Joe Williams fits the Pats in terms of dedication to football, and he’s only 210 lbs, but he’s an interesting potential pro. I like his “tape” a lot. Marlon Mack is big and fast but he’s more of an athlete than a runner, runs a lot like Tre’ Mason. Ordinary prospect imo. James Conner is highly regarded but I don’t see it. Don’t like his ability… Read more »

” Curious to see how fans/the media handles his NFL success.”

Hmmm. There is never a guarantee of success in the NFL, no matter how good a player performed in college.Report

You get my point. Frank Clark’s collegiate transgressions have been basically ignored on the air. They’ve tiptoed around Tyreek Hill’s past. Whether he’s successful or not, the moment he gets on the field it will be the elephant in the room.Report

I think you meant “You don’t get my point.” I do agree with that part of your post. Definitely Mixon’s past is not going away. Just like AP’s past transgressions are mentioned in almost every article about him.Report
