Ring Envy: Super Bowl Edition

After posting the Ring Envy: Free Agency Edition, I still had thoughts about the one that got away, because the mods at the Falcons forum were too salty to keep the post up. But then it came to me like a proverb: The interwebs store cached views of any page. After digging through many available cache pages, the data I found was enough to compile the Super Bowl Edition of Ring Envy. Please note that there are gaps between the timing of the comments made, especially in the 3rd and 4th quarter. Moral of the story: Pride comes before the salty fall. 🙂

First Half

Even if they score first, remember we’ve come back and blown teams out after they did it. Saints for one.

Let’s make Terrific tom feel the heat D!!!!!!! And make the other one leave our board!!

HIT THEM HARD!!!

I’m going to say a little prayer, that no matter who wins this game, the refs don’t play a part. Good luck.

I’m about to faint. Is this real?!

Prove me wrong d, and get a stop.

Brady got outside that pocket.

Defense just like said. We got this.

DQ is dialed in. We’re mixing up our D already with man coverage and a blitz to start the game off.

They done started that flag **** already…

Debo!

The iceman cometh

FREEEEEE

i thought they were going to let them play .. already throwing flags

OUR GAME!!!!!

the mother ****ing juice man

Awesome 3 and out.. And Awesome Free run!!!

**** yeahhhh

Freeman is a beast!!!!!

HelI yeah Deion! Also, so much for letting teams play, already a hold lol.
Now that the jitters are gone, lets get it!!

Wished Free would’ve taken it to the house. Offense kind of went stale on that second series of downs. Gotta get the butterflies out I guess.

Defense has to keep Bringing the Bad Intentions

this is going to be a war… we will earn this win!!

Don’t panic y’all we will NOT stop Brady. He’s going to get his

Heart is racing. Omfg

The Patriots fans that came here didn’t want to admit that they’re linebackers are slow.

Patience is the key for the Falcons to beat the Patriots in my opinion.

They need to wait for their moments and not buy into this “HOW GREAT THOU ARE” BS where the Patriots offense and defense goes. That is just my opinion. GO FALCONS! LET’S WIN THIS ONE!!!!!!

Running this well against them is a great sign. Keep pounding it and wear out their D

THIS ****ING DEFENSE!!!

D AIN’T PLAYIN BABY LET’S GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Goodwin may be our Malcolm Butler for this game

Brady is frustrated. Let’s pop this score up to 14-0

My god I know the defense has greatly improved but I DID NOT EXPECT THIS!!!!!

The fact That Our D has shutout NE this much. That could be the difference if our offense gets its act toghether.

time to order that superbowl shirt were to young too strong too fast
Looking like the Patriot’s Offense is running into a BUZZSAW!!!

Dang what a Toe tap by Juliooooo

Matt Ryan is showing why he is MVP!!!!!!

run these mofos out the building!!!

They got no answers!!!!!!!

Now this is new school Falcons football!!!!!

Pats will soon be one-dimensional…Turn the dogs lose

U can read Belichick mouth to ref: That’s bull#$%#. lol. RISE UP

Dear Lord, just let my team hang on and defeat the Evil Empire once and for all

Not to get your hopes up but no team has ever come back from more than 10 points in a Super Bowl. 100% winning percentage.

They’re like “These plays weren’t in that backpack!”

Not enough. I want more. Keep pounding these pansies!!!!

2 weeks is not enough time to game plan against our offense. You need a whole offseason plus more

bull**** flags trying to keep the Patriots in the game…

If you had the over on “phantom holding calls that bail out Brady”, you are making a killing

Wtf guys.

They’re beating our secondary

We are like holding on purpose. That is a smart tatic to take time off the clock.

I made the statement here, and called in to dukes and bell this week when they were asking for score predictions 56-3 and we pull our starters in the 3rd

Pour it on. Not enough points– or Brady Bunch hits!

This feeling I feel, it is surreal

A 21 point lead with 8 minutes left on the clock please.

OH yeah, nobody has ever come back from a 14 point holes, much less a 21 point one.

BEATDOWN GOING ON IN TEXAS-TOWN!

Y’all we were never worried because we knew we are better than this team.

I am on Cloud 10

Good job. My goodness this D has been lights out this half.

Sorry Tom….maybe next year!!

21-3 at half…I’ll take that. If we can open up with a TD in the second half this thing is all but wrapped up. I wouldn’t put it past the Pats to open up with an onside kick

Tom Brady looks like he’s in pain. Goooooodddddd.

More LEGAL PAIN on Brady Bunch. Still waiting for THE PUNISHER to almost decapitate Edelman.

You know they would love the narrative to be Brady gets his 5th with most impressive comeback in SB history. Don’t let up boys… don’t let up.

Halftime

Guys…..we are REALLY CLOSE to closing this think out the right way. One half of football left to play. Do the best job yet and bring home that Lombardi!!!!

I’ve got a few more gifs. Gonna hold them for later. Can’t risk a jinx

Yall know they’re going to blame Gronk being out for them losing, but I DON’T CARE!!!!!! A LOMBARDI IS A LOMBARDI!!!! And we did it the right way.

Their D is rested. Matt needs to tear it apart.

Saw a ranking of healthiest teams and Patriots were at the top. If they lose because they’re missing one player they aren’t the best team in the NFL. We’re missing 4 defensive starters on IR. RISE UP BABY, IT’S ALL ABOUT THE FINISH

Ugh what a half. Ryan will come out firing and put this thing to bed.

We get Tru back next year too…. Dynasty i am seeing.

not worried about how we’ll approach second half…just gotta execute!! and we’ve done that!! Pats will expose themselves to big plays in second half…

Even Gronk couldn’t help them in this BEATDOWN. They are going to have to kneel in front of us and kiss our a$$e$

Hey guys remember how free was running the ball. Shanahan and this offense did not have to work to hard and Julio was getting catches. NE D was not ready.

Third Quarter

I hate the long half time… you lose your rhythm

Relax. They need the refs to win. The Falcons just keep playing.

Yep…they obviously are trying g to let the pats back in it. I’m irritated though we went overy an hour off the field…talk about screwing up your timing and momentum

D has to come up with a stop. It was a Very long time since we saw the Falcons offense.

Is it me or does Julian Edelman always look confused out there.

Lights too big for Hogan.

This is infuriating man. I just hope our D just pile drives Brady this drive
I want to see Brady’s azz hit the turf!

YES, THERE WE GO BABY!

Bargain basement wide receivers

“WTF?” – Belichick.

OMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMG

Someone pinch me!

The sb is comin to Atlanta boys!!!!

Hell yes, dominating! Awesome!!!!!!!!

New England, you’re getting you’re azzzz woooped!!!!!

Just beating the **** out of the pats. Unbelievable.

It’s a clinic out there…

One of the most dominant teams I’ve seen over the last 7 weeks in my life. No not just us, I mean the entire history of the game!

Man… I am SO LOVING THIS!!!!

My prediction on this board and through countless texts, 37 -17 is looking incorrect. I don’t think they will get there.

matt pretty much playing a flawless game

For real. Need to take a lot of time off the clock and get at least a FG, but really need a TD.

Fourth Quarter

Falcons need to NOT LET UP! 2 score game and it’s time to put the Patriots away with one more score.

Lets salt this away in style.

Don’t snap the ball with more than 3 seconds on the game clock, and hit Julio over the middle on play action for the kill shot.

just give us a 5 minute plus drive here and at least a field goal and we are good

Dang it, run the clock all the way down before snapping the frigging ball!!!!

Enjoy it honestly I didn’t think the Falcons would win this one not even close.

Long azz drive with a score at the end please

I WANT TO SEE THE KILL SHOT NOW!!!

I am trying to figure out why this game seems to take so long without many first downs by the Patriots on offense. It’s almost like the clock is moving slower or something when the Patriots get the ball on offense. It’s strange.

One drive for SB victory guys. Watch out because Belichick is sending the kitchen sink. One big play from someone and this Lombardi is ours.

wow….come on guys. Put this away in style.

NOO whats going on??

I will never understand why a team regardless of the situation of the game, would do exactly what the other teams expect and what they know they will do. I hope Coleman is okay.

Dayum, I don’t like the conservative approach. If we don’t make this they can get back in this thing. I hope TeCo is okay.

Biggest play of the game coming here. First down and we can take two more minutes off the clock

Just shoot me.

Uh oh. So much for not paying Free

Well folks……Here we go..Brady magic.. What was Deveonta looking for?

Y’all we have the MVP of the league on our team. Everybody needs to focus and finish. From Kyle on down. We will not lose this game

No way in hell they were gonna onside it there wtf was that

Better ****ing make up for that no block Free!!!

Momentum is gone.

Freeman made up for that missed block

Keep doing THAT!!!!

I guarantee we don’t choke here. We got this everyone!!

Not now man, why’s everyone getting hurt?

Don’t get conservative!

Need at least a FG to get a 2 score game.

Why snap the ball with 20 seconds on the play clock?!

I’m sweating and my heart is pounding

I’m on my knees

**** collins cant cover ****

I cant watch it anymore.

Unbelievable if you just kick the FG this game is over

Defense is too tired!!

My god…..

****….he caught it.

We lost our timeout!!!

I knew they’d make us sweat for it.

What that was a catch, omg.

No excuse in this ****ttt

Weems is a ****’ idiot

Overtime

and they won the toss, come on defense

We are the only team that could blow a 25 point lead in the Super Bowl
we haven’t blown it completely yet, but it’s looking like it

Doesn’t help when our coach cal three pass plays within the 25. F Shanny.

This **** is rigged. I’m done with the NFL.

Heartbroken

They don’t call us the Failcons for nothing

You’re right this loss was this teams MO down to a ****ing T. Get your hopes up only to crush your ****ing heart in the end. It will always be this way. Its so ****ing hard to be a fan of this team. I will still be here though waiting for my heart to get crushed every year.

Yep, worse choke job in SB history and the only OT Superbowl. This will be a historically remembered SB that will dog our Franchise and every player and coach on this team until the team moves to another City or just shuts down.

We were able to to match the Bills devastation in one single game.

One day this **** will all be worth it but holy **** does this hurt. Like deep down in your ****ing heart ****ing hurt.

Straight up devastating. I drop some tears in the 3rd quarter just for this bulls***

I hate everything. Saints still have a championship and we dont. Christ. Up 28-3. I hate this ****. Mike Smith mentality.

I broke my bathroom mirror and kicked a hole in my closet wall. Oh oh and I literally ripped the Falcons license plate off of my car.

If the Malcolm Butler deal is done, it would have already happened. Considering the gray area issues of RFA trades, I am willing to bet the Patriots and the Saints, teams which have been a target of the League and other owners’ ire, are taking a very cautious approach. It is entirely possible that any deal involving Butler falls apart because either of the teams cannot find a way out of the CBA quagmire.

I really feel bad for Malcolm. He is a great success story, but has to swallow a tough pill only because his agent overreached.Report

hugowasmyhomeboy

I don’t think that’s true DFW. What’s the rush for either side? There’s yet a lot of time for a deal to get done.Report

dfwpatsfan
Member
Free agent

I feel it’s in the Saints best interest to get it done before the draft and voluntary OTAs. Also, the Patriots would not want to delay the inevitable, they have severed ties with players much more surgically before.

This might be a unique case where the Patriots are in a bind as they would not want to risk more unnecessary scrutiny on the organization. I guess there is still a little bit more time, it just feels unnatural that a deal has not been struck yet.Report

hugowasmyhomeboy
Member

Well, it would be a blessing in disguise if that stops the Patriots from trading Butler for 32 overall. But the draft is in more than a month. There’s all kinds of time. And even after that a deal with a 2018 pick could still happen.Report

dfwpatsfan

I personally think that the Pats should not settle for the 32 pick. But if I am the Saints, why give up multiple picks (like say a third this year and a first next year) and a massive contract when they can find a stellar CB in the draft this year? That’s what makes it unlikely for an organization to go out on a limb. Maybe I am naively optimistic, I just think that the team is trying to repair its relationship with Butler and see if he will sign the tender for this year. He will have to bet… Read more »

this is why I think Butler will play for the Pats in 2017 for $3.91M and then hit FA unrestricted in 2018. And it’s still not a bad deal for him, despite his age and his clock ticking (in terms of his peak years).Report

I’d take back an in-shape, motivated, and most importantly cheap Revis. If he sucks then just cut him. It’d be hilarious if the Jets were paying his salary while he was winning a 2nd SB with the Pats. They would probably give him another multi-year deal after just to try to get back at the Pats and be stuck with him again.Report

hugowasmyhomeboy
Member
Free agent

Karen Gregurian (grain of salt) said that supposedly BB told Revis back in 2014 that he doesn’t think his skillset translates to safety. I’d read that as an indictment of his ability to play in zone coverage.
The question is – does he mean it doesn’t translate as in he wouldn’t be Revis anymore (not a big deal) or he wouldn’t be good at all (big deal)?Report

dfwpatsfan
Member

Just for the reasons Hugo pointed out, BB will not take a chance with Revis. He helped Belichick and the Pats win a SB and much water has flown under that bridge since.

I think there is a strong possibility the Steelers try to sign him if Revis gives them a hometown discount.Report

Local sports talk yesterday:
1. hinting that owners asked the league to watch the Butler situation closely. What’s the point of having RFA rules if they can be circumvented?
2. suggesting that the Pats holding the line on Butler’s extension offer prior to last season, had some outside influence – if the Pats give their “not even an RFA yet” player a boatload of dough, that means all the other teams will have less leverage with their inexpensive but high performing young players.
3. Reiss’ article about Butler being single, came out of left field, so there must be something to it.Report

I mean of course there is something to him being single, but that is said for every pro athlete and person with money who is single. You are talking about two different statistical approaches though. When you are making predictions, the outcome is predicated on the accuracy of the parameters of your model. If you are looking for a ‘shock’ to a system, you are looking for anomalies in data already collected. The methods used for detecting these anomalies require the ‘shock’ to be within the time series which is why it takes a couple days of polling post-event for the ‘shock’ to be detected statistically.Report

What is the 89 percent rule?
There is a belief that NFL teams must spend 89 percent of the salary cap to be in compliance with the new collective bargaining agreement. That is both simultaneously correct and incorrect. The rule does not apply to a singular season for teams, but applies to an aggregate total over the course of four seasons. Specifically through the course of 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016. This means the team must hit the mark by the time the league rolls into the 2017 year, so March of 2017.

Ok, here’s another conundrum. The Patriots have $26 million in cap space and absolutely nothing to spend it on. There aren’t that many free agents available that will eat up a lot of cap space. I can’t think of any players on the roster that would warrant an extension. What are they going to do with all of that space? I think it should be used to extend Butler and Jimmy G (as long as neither is asking for the moon.)Report

LaFeteMattDog

But what about this year? Is there a cap floor? You need to spend the money on someone. I have no idea what Jimmy is thinking about his future and neither do you. We are just contemplating here. If he is thinking he’d have a better chance at a successful career here and likes it here (smart move in my opinion), he might consider waiting an extra year to take over the reins.Report

Brian Hoyer was TB12’s only backup as a rookie UDFA, the year after TB12’s blown out knee. They didn’t know if TB12 would hold up the whole season and were comfortable with Hoyer.

LaFeteMattDog

Ok, I suppose you’re right. My argument of holding on to him as a backup was weak. We are going to hold on to him because he is a franchise QB and BB knows this. He doesn’t want to just give him away for a draft pick.Report
