Don’t Try This At Home: Smoot, Phillips (Illinois)

-by Hugo

EDGE Dawuane Smoot
Illinois
6’3” 263#, with average arm length and a stocky frame.
Team captain.
Lined up mostly at LDE in a 3-point stance.

Pros:

  • Sudden out of his stance. Stays low. Can knife into the backfield when he times the snap.
  • Always working to defeat blocks. Active hands, moves feet.
  • Looks comfortable in space, runs hard. Should be able to learn how to drop into coverage in the flats.
  • Has nascent pass rushing skills. Shows a push-pull and a rip move. Looks like he could be a good technician in the pros.
  • Plays with an edge. Doesn’t try to go around blockers.

Cons:

  • More sudden than he is powerful. When he doesn’t get a quick jump off the ball, he struggles to defeat offensive tackles.
  • Surprisingly poor power player for a player who profiles to be one. No bull rush to speak of.
  • Doesn’t have a nose for the ball. Ran himself out of some running plays.
  • Struggles to stay low when fighting blocks in space. Maybe he could benefit from NFL strength and conditioning?

A senior with a subpar athletic profile, Smoot is the kind of edge player who could be available to the Patriots early on Day 3. He is physical, and reminds me a bit of Jabaal Sheard. I think Smoot’s best position might be 3-technique defensive tackle on passing downs. On early downs he would be a rotational edge defender.

Grade: 45 (late Day 2-early Day 3)

EDGE Carroll Phillips Illinois
6’3” 240#, with a narrow build.
Looks like a move tight end.
Lined up at RDE. Came off the field when Illinois opponents were in the red zone, as well as on some 3rd and short plays.

Pros:

  • Impressive speed in a straight line for an edge defender.
  • Needs a small window to turn the corner around tackles
  • Doesn’t take plays off. Makes a lot of plays in pursuit.
  • Strong tackler.

Cons:

  • Severely undersized and will need to become a full-time linebacker.
  • Lousy punch, struggles to control blockers. Will be dominated at the point of attack.
  • Does not challenge tackles with his speed at the collegiate level. High sack total but infrequently generates non-sack pressure.
  • Frequently ends up on the ground.
  • Tested poorly at the scouting combine.

Phillips was ultra-productive in college, but reviewing his “tape” it is hard to see that continuing at the next level. He is a run-and-chase player rather than a down lineman, and has zero experience dropping into coverage. His best chance at an NFL career will be starting on special teams and developing from there.

Grade: 20 (not draftable)

But why would Revis want to play at a bargain price? The Jets are on the hook to pay Revis $6 million, less anything he makes from another team. Which means that if Revis plays for less than $6 million, he’s effectively playing for free.
There is, however, the possibility that Revis still wants to play because he’s a competitor, and because he wants to prove the doubters wrong. If that’s the case, what better team to go to than the favorites to win the Super Bowl?Report

LaFeteMattDog
Member

He’s earning that 6 no matter what. He wants to play. So yeah, he will not make any more money because nobody is paying him more than that. So it’s all about who wants him and where he wants to go.Report

Revis is done as a #1 shutdown corner. If he’s motivated, he could probably be a pretty good #2 that gets help over the top.
This doesn’t mean I’m on the “bring Revis back to NE” train. Just saying that, if he really wanted to, he could still have a couple good years left in him.Report

LaFeteMattDog

Are you sure about that? I was under the impression that the Jets have to pay him that no matter what. If the Pats sign him to a minimum contract, he’s still earning that money from the Jets.Report

Say the Saints really want to sign Butler but don’t want to give up the 11 and the Pats don’t want to accept 32. The Saints could theoretically trade the 11 to someone else for like a 2nd and future first or whatever they deem fair value and then sign Butler and the Pats would have to accept the 32. That’s what I would do if I was the Saints. Of course, Payton may not be there for another year. Only BB can do those mad genius kind of deals.Report

Bones
Editor
Free agent

That would be a bit dirty. The Pats would match whatever they offered Butler out of spite.Report

Lordinnocent

The Patriots still have the opportunity to match the contract though therefore negating the Saints attempt. Even still, it is a steep price to pay for Butler if they make the attempt.Report

LaFeteMattDog

True. I just assumed the Saints would be willing to offer a contract for a lot more than what the Pats are offering, especially since they already signed Gilmore to a big deal.Report

Butler plays for Pats this year, for 3.9 mil…a steal – while he bust-iz-azz to earn his UFA money NEXT YEAR

Pats aren’t without a 1st-rounder this year…they drafted some guy named Cooks, with that. Who cares if they don’t pick until round-3?
BB finds gems there all the time, anyway.Report

My guess on Butler is that the Saints didn’t offer him what he wants. This is why Payton was saying so many nice things about him, like a sales pitch. It’s looking like, even though the Pats want to trade him, Butler will be here one more season.Report

Juicy and oh so delicious. A perfect East Coast IPA.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the Jets made an initial offer of up to $62.5 million over five years. After the physical, however, it became clear that the total dollars and (more importantly) the guarantees wouldn’t ultimately get to the point where Hightower would accept.

The Jets didn’t drop out but they were concerned, the source explained. The Patriots, conversely, knew about any potential medical issues and were comfortable proceeding.Report

I think he’s married too…or at least we know he has kids 🙂Report

Are his tackling issues really weight-related though? Seems to me like he just whiffs.Report

May be he is afraid to tackle.Report

Yeah I don’t really recollect him getting steamrolled by anyone.Report

Maybe it’s a mental thing. More weight -> more confidence -> head up a second longer.Report

Part of why BB signing him again seemed like a long shot to me. You’d think other teams would be less put off by his tackling misadventures than BB.Report

BB seems to demand fundamentally better tacklers.Report

I just love how all of the Falcons fans were poppin’ the champagne already and then they had to sit and watch Brady and Co. crush their dreams.Report

The celebrities (including Samuel L. Jackson) on Twitter were talking all kinds of crap. They had nothing to say after that.Report

My favorite video was all these kids at a house party that were talking so much shit and by the end of the video they’re basically crying and yelling at each other.Report

Here’s a video I haven’t seen yet. Looks like it’ll be good because it’s a sports bar in Atlanta full of fans…

Not hating on him. But when they first show them they are all happy. Then each time they show them, they get less and less happy. Until the end when it looks like they had their souls sucked out.Report

He’s not a bad owner. He was dancing in booth for a while and then did come onto the field pretty darn early…that’s the part that made me happy/laugh.Report

Yeah, according to the comments there, the Jets are on the hook for 6. So if he played here for the veteran minimum, the Jets would pay the rest. So he’s earning that money no matter what.Report
