Don’t Try This At Home: Smoot, Phillips (Illinois)

-by Hugo

EDGE Dawuane Smoot
Illinois
6’3” 263#, with average arm length and a stocky frame.
Team captain.
Lined up mostly at LDE in a 3-point stance.

Pros:

  • Sudden out of his stance. Stays low. Can knife into the backfield when he times the snap.
  • Always working to defeat blocks. Active hands, moves feet.
  • Looks comfortable in space, runs hard. Should be able to learn how to drop into coverage in the flats.
  • Has nascent pass rushing skills. Shows a push-pull and a rip move. Looks like he could be a good technician in the pros.
  • Plays with an edge. Doesn’t try to go around blockers.

Cons:

  • More sudden than he is powerful. When he doesn’t get a quick jump off the ball, he struggles to defeat offensive tackles.
  • Surprisingly poor power player for a player who profiles to be one. No bull rush to speak of.
  • Doesn’t have a nose for the ball. Ran himself out of some running plays.
  • Struggles to stay low when fighting blocks in space. Maybe he could benefit from NFL strength and conditioning?

A senior with a subpar athletic profile, Smoot is the kind of edge player who could be available to the Patriots early on Day 3. He is physical, and reminds me a bit of Jabaal Sheard. I think Smoot’s best position might be 3-technique defensive tackle on passing downs. On early downs he would be a rotational edge defender.

Grade: 45 (late Day 2-early Day 3)

EDGE Carroll Phillips Illinois
6’3” 240#, with a narrow build.
Looks like a move tight end.
Lined up at RDE. Came off the field when Illinois opponents were in the red zone, as well as on some 3rd and short plays.

Pros:

  • Impressive speed in a straight line for an edge defender.
  • Needs a small window to turn the corner around tackles
  • Doesn’t take plays off. Makes a lot of plays in pursuit.
  • Strong tackler.

Cons:

  • Severely undersized and will need to become a full-time linebacker.
  • Lousy punch, struggles to control blockers. Will be dominated at the point of attack.
  • Does not challenge tackles with his speed at the collegiate level. High sack total but infrequently generates non-sack pressure.
  • Frequently ends up on the ground.
  • Tested poorly at the scouting combine.

Phillips was ultra-productive in college, but reviewing his “tape” it is hard to see that continuing at the next level. He is a run-and-chase player rather than a down lineman, and has zero experience dropping into coverage. His best chance at an NFL career will be starting on special teams and developing from there.

Grade: 20 (not draftable)

I can’t get over that there is a team that calls itself Man City (not that there’s anything wrong with that.) I thought Man City was Provincetown or Key West or San Francisco. 🙂

But why would Revis want to play at a bargain price? The Jets are on the hook to pay Revis $6 million, less anything he makes from another team. Which means that if Revis plays for less than $6 million, he’s effectively playing for free.
There is, however, the possibility that Revis still wants to play because he’s a competitor, and because he wants to prove the doubters wrong. If that’s the case, what better team to go to than the favorites to win the Super Bowl?

Lordinnocent
Member
Free agent

Has Revis really done a 180 though? Seems to me he still wants as much money as he can get.

Deadsmack #NotDone
Member
Free agent

His playing last year was awful, the biggest question is that if he lost some speed or if he lost the passion for the game?.

LaFeteMattDog
Member
Free agent

He’s earning that 6 no matter what. He wants to play. So yeah, he will not make any more money because nobody is paying him more than that. So it’s all about who wants him and where he wants to go.

Deadsmack #NotDone
Member
Free agent

Both the Boston Globe and Boston Herald have stories today suggesting that the Patriots may sign Revis.

LaFeteMattDog
Member
Free agent

They’re just throwing that out there with no real inside knowledge. I don’t think it’s going to happen. Revis is done.

Deadsmack #NotDone
Member
Free agent

The big problem is not only that. Revis is gonna earn 6 million this season from the Jets, unless he signs with some other team.
No way Pats or any other team will pay him 5+ million

LaFeteMattDog
Member
Free agent

Are you sure about that? I was under the impression that the Jets have to pay him that no matter what. If the Pats sign him to a minimum contract, he’s still earning that money from the Jets.

Lordinnocent
Member
Free agent

omg we can click hyperlinks now! This place is finally only 10 years behind! XD

LaFeteMattDog
Member
Free agent

Yeah, according to the comments there, the Jets are on the hook for 6. So if he played here for the veteran minimum, the Jets would pay the rest. So he’s earning that money no matter what.

BoSoxJim
Member
Free agent

Revis is done as a #1 shutdown corner. If he’s motivated, he could probably be a pretty good #2 that gets help over the top.
This doesn’t mean I’m on the “bring Revis back to NE” train. Just saying that, if he really wanted to, he could still have a couple good years left in him.

Deadsmack #NotDone
Member
Free agent

Revis as #CB2, IF Butler leaves could be an interesting idea

BoSoxJim

I’m wondering if he burned his bridge on the way out. Nothing is impossible. Just improbable.

Say the Saints really want to sign Butler but don’t want to give up the 11 and the Pats don’t want to accept 32. The Saints could theoretically trade the 11 to someone else for like a 2nd and future first or whatever they deem fair value and then sign Butler and the Pats would have to accept the 32. That’s what I would do if I was the Saints. Of course, Payton may not be there for another year. Only BB can do those mad genius kind of deals.

Lordinnocent
Member
Free agent

The Patriots still have the opportunity to match the contract though therefore negating the Saints attempt. Even still, it is a steep price to pay for Butler if they make the attempt.

LaFeteMattDog
Member
Free agent

True. I just assumed the Saints would be willing to offer a contract for a lot more than what the Pats are offering, especially since they already signed Gilmore to a big deal.

Lordinnocent
Member
Free agent

I haven’t looked at available cap of teams but considering the Pats still have a hefty amount left and opportunity to increase it with cuts/restructures..I’d be doubtful the saints would try anything crazy. Especially considering their previous cap H3ll

LaFeteMattDog
Member

Yeah, I know. But it doesn’t matter how much money they have. If they don’t think a guy is worth a particular number they’re not going to extend themselves beyond that number.

Butler plays for Pats this year, for 3.9 mil…a steal – while he bust-iz-azz to earn his UFA money NEXT YEAR

Pats aren’t without a 1st-rounder this year…they drafted some guy named Cooks, with that. Who cares if they don’t pick until round-3?
BB finds gems there all the time, anyway.

bring
Member

My guess on Butler is that the Saints didn’t offer him what he wants. This is why Payton was saying so many nice things about him, like a sales pitch. It’s looking like, even though the Pats want to trade him, Butler will be here one more season.

cfpats4

I don’t think its out of the question at all. I think BB and co are playing this very much like Hightower. Allow his agent to gauge numbers and go from there – or allow them to convince a team to sign a offer sheet, and see if the Patriots will match.

Trying to negotiate a long term deal with another team may also have changed his perspective on the Pats.

3rd round prospects for the pats: Austin carr, slot receiver from Northwestern

What kind of beer are you drinking tonight?

Neil X

Well. I have a really good answer for this one. I was lucky enough to find two cases of Collective Arts Ransack the Universe Hurricane IPA. In 16 ounce cans, and beautiful cans they are. Out of Hamilton, Ontario, Collective Arts really outdoes itself on labeling as well as brewing.

Juicy and oh so delicious. A perfect East Coast IPA.

Neil X

We used to drink Moosehead, but the go to Canadian beer was Calgary Amber. With the nifty twist off mold on the bottom of each bottle. You could twist off any beer as long as you had a second bottle of beer. Didn’t even need to be full.

I wish we we were on Livefyre and I could just upload my photos of the Collective Arts cans. They are truly amazing, each one completely unique.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the Jets made an initial offer of up to $62.5 million over five years. After the physical, however, it became clear that the total dollars and (more importantly) the guarantees wouldn’t ultimately get to the point where Hightower would accept.

The Jets didn’t drop out but they were concerned, the source explained. The Patriots, conversely, knew about any potential medical issues and were comfortable proceeding.

MrScratch

Why would a team pay $62.5M for a LB when they aren’t going to win even 6 games?

Unless they had no intention of signing him, and were upping the ante to force the Pats to overpay for him.
