Pre-Free Agency Free Agents Recap

-by DNOMN8R314

With the legal tampering period about to start, Patriots fans’ focus is on two things: who the Patriots will retain of their own players, and who the Patriots will sign from other teams. This article deals with the first point only.

With James Develin signing a two-year contract earlier today, New England has 18 free agents on the verge of hitting the open market. Here is a quick recap of them all, starting with the ERFAs (who will almost certainly return) and ending with the UFAs (who knows what will happen with them, so I won’t bother predicting). I’ll update the article as I see news that has been announced.

Exclusive-rights

Justin Coleman, CB: Coleman began the year as the incumbent third corner, but subpar play dropped him to a weekly scratch. Despite this, he’ll probably return for competition. (UPDATE 3/7: Coleman received the ERFA tender from New England.)

Brandon King, S: King continued his top-notch special teams play and will certainly be a key third-unit player once again.

Matt Lengel, TE: Serving almost exclusively as a blocker, Lengel performed well once Rob Gronkowski went on injured reserve. While New England may look for an upgrade, Lengel should also return. (UPDATE 3/7: Lengel received the ERFA tender from New England.)

Restricted

Malcolm Butler, CB: Mike Reiss has reported that the Patriots are expected to place a first-round tender on Butler, and I would be unsurprised if they extended him as well. Butler has proven himself a true top corner. (UPDATE 3/7: The Patriots have placed the first-round tender on Butler.)

Cameron Fleming, T: After an underwhelming 2015 along with the rest of the offensive line, Fleming bounced back under Dante Scarnecchia’s coaching and played well as the sixth OL. He should be given the low tender. (UPDATE 3/7: The Patriots have placed the original-round tender, in this case a fourth, on Fleming.)

Michael Williams, TE: Williams spent all of the year on injured reserve and was not even listed on the Patriots’ website. I doubt he’ll be tendered or brought back. (UPDATE 3/9: Williams has reportedly returned to New England on a one-year deal.)

Unrestricted

Martellus Bennett, TE: Despite an injured ankle for most of the season, and despite injuries preventing him from seeing the field alongside Gronkowski, Bennett put up seven touchdowns after the Patriots acquired him from Chicago. (UPDATE 3/10: Bennett has signed with the Packers.)

LeGarrette Blount, RB: Blount set a personal and franchise record with 18 rushing touchdowns, and broke 1,000 yards on the ground for the second time in his career. Reportedly New England is preparing for Blount to sign elsewhere.

Brandon Bolden, RB: Bolden’s 2016 contributions came exclusively on special teams, as the performances of Blount, Dion Lewis, and James White meant he did not see the field on offense.

Alan Branch, DT: Branch was New England’s best interior lineman last year, and the Patriots have been in talks with him about a new contract. (UPDATE 3/9: Branch has re-signed with New England on a two-year deal with a maximum value of $12 million.)

Michael Floyd, WR: After an impressive Week 17 showing against Miami, Floyd did not do much in the playoffs. As a bigger-built outside receiver, he is in a different mold than the rest of New England’s WR corps.

Duron Harmon, S: A third-round surprise whose draft pick cutups included a blocked field goal return, Harmon has been an excellent deep safety for New England in his four years in Foxboro. (UPDATE 3/9: Harmon has re-signed with New England on a four-year deal with a maximum value of $20 million.)

Dont’a Hightower, LB: The team’s top free agent, Hightower has been a Bill Belichick staple on the front seven, lining up in multiple spots on the formation and earning a captainship this year.

Chris Long, DE: Long signed a cheap one-year deal in order to earn a ring and got it, totaling four sacks on the season. Long has already announced that he will not return to New England for the 2017 season.

Barkevious Mingo, LB: The Patriots acquired Mingo before the start of the season, but only used him as a frequent special teams contributor, disappointing those who were hoping to see his athleticism on display across the defense. (UPDATE 3/9: Mingo has signed with the Colts on a one-year, $2.5 million deal.)

Logan Ryan, CB: After a down 2014 campaign, Ryan propelled himself back to the #2 corner in 2015 and remained there last year even after the acquisition of Eric Rowe. I said earlier that Hightower is New England’s top free agent, but Ryan will likely be the most expensive(UPDATE 3/10: Ryan has signed with the Titans on a three-year, $30 million deal.)

Greg Scruggs, TE: A converted defensive end, Scruggs spent his only two games on the 53-man roster as an inactive, then was placed on injured reserve.

Jabaal Sheard, DE: Sheard had a fantastic 2015 but failed to play up to his #1 billing in 2016; after a Week 10 benching, Sheard elevated his play and became a solid member of the defensive end rotation for the rest of the year. (UPDATE 3/10: Sheard has signed with the Colts on a three-year, $25.5 million deal.)

Several players know for their pocket collapsing ability, including Aaron Donald, Geno Atkins, Mike Daniels, Calais Campbell and Fletcher Cox, all ranked above Guy. However, the Ravens underrated defensive end was more disruptive than well regarded pass rushers such as Joey Bosa, Jadeveon Clowney, Grady Jarrett, Ndamukong Suh, Damon Harrison and Muhammed Wilkerson, according to this measurement. It is worth noting that most of these players played a greater percentage of snaps than Guy, which hurt their pass rush average, but a top-8 ranking from Guy is impressive nonetheless.Report

NextGen Stats: Ravens Lawrence Guy was one of the best interior pass rushers in the NFL last season

Lawrence Guy, Baltimore Ravens (4.24 average distance to the quarterback)
…it’s unlikely most readers know recognize the name Lawrence Guy. A five-year veteran, Guy had stints with the Colts and Chargers before coming to Baltimore. He has 5.5 of his 6.5 career sacks since signing with the Ravens. Despite only registering a single sack, Guy brought consistent pressure with a 4.24 average yards to the quarterback on pass rush attempts. He only played 47 percent of the defensive snaps, so he’s a rotational player, but his value to the team appears clear.Report

Guy, 27, next week, had been linked to a number of teams during the free agent period, but the Ravens were reportedly monitoring his market and had interest in re-signing him. Instead, Guy will head to New England after visiting with the club earlier this week. Guy, who ranked as PFR’s No. 12 interior defender, also drew interest from the Redskins and Dolphins. Guy hasn’t missed a game over the past two seasons, earning 16 combined starts for the Ravens. After recording 4.5 sacks during the 2015 campaign, Guy finished the 2016 season with 28 tackles, one sack, and one… Read more »

Also. Kony Ealy is decent but if the Patriots have Butler and Gimore as well as DMC and Chung and then Harmon to play deep where he is best suited so they are a top level defensive backfield they dont need 2 top level DE’s to rush the qb. Flowers is very good and then it “whoever” imo and that “whoever” will be better because the defensive backfield should be able to give them more time to get to the qb. That is ONLY if Butler stays for this season though. Patriots would still be smart to draft Joe Mathis.… Read more »

I think Butler not signing the tender means that he will be staying in New England, also. He cant be traded for draft picks if he doesn’t sign the offer. i wouldn’t be surprised if he signs it after the draft and then plays here for a season on a good team and what should be a good defense which can only drive up the cost for him in free agencyReport

Nink and Ealy with Flowers are the rotation at DE. Cooks is a 2 year rental last one being a franchise tag. Very good player but he will get top wr money and he deserves it. He is a need imo if the patriots want to win another SB with Brady still playing. Edelman will be 31 when the season starts and has taken a beating. I don’t expect him to be able to play at a high level or for long with the way he plays and with his age. Cooks is a guarantee that if Edelman regresses due… Read more »

Agree with that. I think Cooks is a move to get another SB with Brady still at qb, Long term it makes no sense to trade a 1st rounder for a 1 or 2 year rental. I see it more as a sign of the patriots being all in while Brady is still playingReport

FWIW, these are the grades (overall) PFF gave for Butler, Ryan and Gilmore last season:

7. Butler (88.6) – High Quality
16. Logan Ryan (83.5) – Above Average
61. Stephon Gilmore (73.2) – AverageReport

M.Fan

Do these grades take into account who the opposing QB is?Report

BoSoxJim

It basically is independent of all that stuff.
For a CB, things they look at are, for example, did he stay with his man in man coverage or did he bite on a double move and get burned.
Did a safety provide the help he was supposed to (that can be a tough one).Report

markpatriots
Member

I dislike their grades. As far as stats are concerned those are also very hard to compare when the Patriots and Bills play 2 very different styles of defense. One is hyper aggressive and one is more a smart mans gameplan defense. Gimore would have better stats in a BB defense and Butler would be worse in a a Rex Ryan defense imo. Very few cb’s actually 1-Revis in his heyday could do what Ryan wants on a consistent basis.Report

http://billswire.usatoday.com/2017/01/11/why-bills-cb-stephon-gilmore-wasnt-as-bad-as-you-thought-in-2016/ In a nutshell Gimore was terrible in the first 9 weeks of the season with the patriots game being his worst. After the Patriots game Rex Ryan called him and challenged him to play better and Gilmore responded. From Weeks 11-16, Gilmore allowed 15 receptions on 28 targets for 183 yards and a touchdown while recording three interceptions, per PFF. Gilmore played like the shutdown cornerback everyone expected him to be during that span. Conflicting reports on Guy’s pass rushing abilities: some say not much (career stats of 6.5 sacks in 5 years) others say can kick to the inside and rush the passer (sometimes just pressuring from the inside is also very valuable, even without registering a sack).Report

Ok d-line looks like it has some nice depth. Secondary looks great if they can keep Butler. Offense looks like they’re gonna put up 50 burgers on the regular. Now sign Hightower, trade Jimmy for draft picks and go 19-0.Report

Probably. Guy is that versatile DL that can play 5-Tech or kick inside to provide rush. But who knows how many they’re looking forReport

I like the Guy signing, the DL itself looks solid with him, Branch resigned and Ealy.
Now for the linebackers please…Report

OK, just for completeness, I looked up the game grades for Buffalo. PFF only provides the top 5 performers on offense and defense each week, so for games when Gilmore wasn’t top 5 all I can do is post <5th highest graded player.

Game 9 (SEA): <75.7
Game 10 (CIN): 80.9
Game 11 (JAX): <74.6
Game 12 (OAK): <72.6
Game 13 (PIT): 74.8
Game 14 (CLE): 80.5
Game 15 (MIA): <74.3
Game 16 (NYJ): <74

So he had 2 games rated above average and 6 games rated average (or less).Report

SEA: -1

Thanks Memo. How do you have access to those? They’re charging insane amounts of money for that now.Report

It is not boxscores, it is people that watch videos to see when players are being targetedReport

Do you think Rowe had a good AFC CG vs. Pitt? If you look at his box score you would think he did great. In actuality, receivers dropped passes that would have gone for huge gains and/or scores.Report

Rowe sucks playing zone D, but Pats can always use him playing man coverage and jamming WR’s at the LOSReport

Doug Moore‏@DMooreNFL
Good pick-up. Can play DE & slide inside to DT if needed. Stout against the run & still only 27. Not bad for $5mil AAV. #PatriotsReport
