PATRIOTS CAP FLURRY OF ACTIVITY

FOXBOROUGH, MA – The New England capped off a busy few weeks with the announcement of the signing of DE Chris Long. Long, a nine-year veteran of the NFL, is the latest key player from their recent Super Bowl run the Patriots have retained.

The activity started in late February when the Patriots franchised Pro Bowl LB Dont’a Hightower. They then struck last minute deals with CB Logan Ryan and TE Martellus Bennett just before free agency began. Ryan received a 4-year deal worth $34M including a $10M signing bonus with a first-year payout of $5.5M. Bennett received a 3-year contract worth $23M with $11M in guaranteed money and a first-year salary of $7M.

As free agency opened, the Patriots struck quickly, locking up former Baltimore Ravens DT Brandon Williams on a 4-year, $36M deal. Williams received a $12M signing bonus with a first-year salary of $5M to help solidify the Patriots’ interior defensive line.

New England, however, wasn’t done. They inked 1,000-yard rusher LeGarrette Blount to a 2-year extension worth $5M before re-signing FS Duron Harmon to a deal for 3 years at $16M with a $3M bonus and $3M first-year salary.

For a while it appeared that the Patriots would lose veteran DE Jabaal Sheard who was reportedly on his way to the rival Miami Dolphins, but at the last moment Sheard changed course and accepted a 3-year, $27M deal to stay in New England with $15M in guaranteed money and a first-year salary of $8M.

On the heels of the Sheard deal, the team did announce that it has parted ways with WR Danny Amendola. Along with free agent defection DT Alan Branch to the Denver Broncos, they are the only key components the Patriots have lost from last year’s Super Bowl championship team this offseason with Long now back in the fold.

Long will be returning to New England for his second season after having registered four sacks in 16 games last year. His one-year deal reportedly carries only $500,000 in guaranteed money.

Additionally, New England has reportedly struck a 5-year, $65M extension with CB Malcolm Butler whom the team placed a first-round tender on. Butler will reportedly receive a $10M signing bonus but will play 2017 under the franchise tender.

With now only $9.1 M in cap space, the Patriots would appear to be done in free agency and will move onto the draft. However, the team will face very minimal cap implications due to the combination of roster rules and lower picks.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Unlikely? Sure. Impossible? No.

And this is not a prediction. This is an illustration. I’m not advocating that any of these deals that “should” be done, or these are players that should be signed or re-signed.

What it goes to show is that the Patriots could absolutely spend near (predictable) top dollar for almost all of their free agents and even upgrade in a few areas without anything being outrageous or irresponsible.

Everywhere I seem to look in these days heading toward free agency, the call is that of a team that will be looking to pinch pennies and waive goodbye to most of their players and bargain-hunt for replacements.

Certainly this is not a position we’re used to this team being in. Ordinarily New England is hardly ever in a cap crunch, but seldom are they among the teams with the most cap space. The standard operating procedure is that New England loses a few guys, redoes a few contracts, re-signs a few guys, flirts with a veteran money “player,” then adds some late bargain free agents.

This year is different. And not only does New England have money to burn, they have money they will have to burn. The defending Super Bowl champion, with a soon to be 40-year-old quarterback, can’t enter next year with $35 million in cap space and a lot of rookies. Nor has this ever been a team that has proceeded in that manner. They won’t go tight against the cap. They’ll want to have flexibility and a long-term vision. But they won’t leave money on the table either, so they will be spending, and there’s a lot of money this year to spend.

Get ready Pats fans, because the big contracts are coming!

Jets hire La’Roi Glover to help coach defensive line

Glover played 13 years in the NFL, finishing with 83.5 sacks. Of that total, 17.0 of them came in 2000 for the Saints, when he led the league in that category. The undersized interior rusher also played for the Rams, Cowboys and Raiders.
Glover has spent the last seven years as the director of player engagement for the Rams, but this is his first coaching job.Report

Jack Doyle had a good season for the Colts, one of the few bright spots for them:

16 games, 14 starts, 59 catches, 584 yards, 9.9 avg, 5 TD

Bennett is a better player, but Doyle could be a nice backup for Gronk and cheaper. If Pats add a rookie TE in the draft, that could provide nice TE depth.Report

@NEPatriotsDraft Unless you work for New England, don’t worry about losing Hightower until he signs with another team. If you do work for NE… Have a plan.
The backup plan shouldn’t be assumed to be replacing Hightower with a similar player. If you can bolster the 1st and 3rd levels of the defense then you’ll be fine. HT is more a special case than a blueprint.Report

go hard on HankinsReport

hugowasmyhomeboy
Member
Free agent

I think investing in off-line LB is something you do if you have a Hightower. If you don’t? You can cover up a lot in the middle by being strong in the front and back.
That’s why the prices are lower at LB and probably part of why BB has always seen them as a relatively good deal. The 2nd level is where the tweeners are.Report

hugowasmyhomeboy
Member
Free agent

I agree but I’m starting to wonder if BB values prime-age defenders as much as we think he does.
In the early 2000s there was some arbitrage in avoiding the back 9. Now, the “dumb” teams aren’t paying a premium on name like they used to. Maybe he’s largely done trying to commit to long term options of any kind and prefers to mix and match rookies, early career trade acquisitions like KVN and Rowe, ring chasers, etc.Report

Hmmm…one of my fantasies (granted it has a snowball’s chance in hell of coming true) is still in play.

AP to the Patriots for less than $6MM/yr AAV (including incentives). Wouldn’t have to face 8-9 man boxes anymore. Be back in a few minutes….Report

BoSoxJim

Everything depends on what other teams will offer Ryan compared to what BB is willing to pay. They have a number and won’t go over it. Doesn’t matter if they have an extra $6MM to spend.Report

The two aren’t mutually exclusive (well, in my fantasy). Getting Campbell is far, far more realistic.Report

Neil X

Well those people who said it about Forte were right. In 2016, 3.7 ypc on 218 carries, 30 receptions for 263 yards, there is nothing elite about any of that.Report

Who was talking about elite? Plus, he was on a crap offense (his choice) and still produced well.Report

I think you could find the right RB in the draft that could give you similar production at 20% of the costReport

I think his reasoning is that Harmon has not played enough snaps (especially as a starter) to command much more than that in the market. I’m not sure. I don’t know what the demand will be for FA FS’s or how other teams value him. I think it could be more than he thinks but not exceedingly so.Report

I tend to agree but FA is hard to predict sometimes. Guys get paid but there are always some guys who don’t for whatever reason.Report

redemption50

I still can’t get a read on what they will do with Hightower. Most years, I think they would just let him test the market. I don’t think he is the style LB that is in vogue in the NFL right now. But they do have a lot of space this year and LB is not overflowing with talent right now. And it only takes one team with too much space to know what to do with and offer him a big deal. I keep leaning both ways on this one.Report

Lots of knee jerk fans. I’m okay with Danny staying put. Whoever we would’ve added and given up would not make us a contender. It may have ended up making us worse in the long run. We just have to stay at the current pace and build for the future. Mortgaging the future for short term help is the Red Sox way.Report

redemption50

I agree but they do still have a bad habit of getting out-muscled down low and having bad third quarters against similar level comp. Horford has not worked out as well as I thought. I know much of his work doesn’t show up on the stat sheet but he is still the same guy, for better or for worse as he was in ATL. It’s too late to do much about it this year (even if they get Bogut) but this summer will be very interesting.Report

Running QB in Kaepernick. Empty cupboard at WR. A bit better at TE than WR. Their best shot at scoring points is going to be to make the run game their focus and build off that. Run blocking types are cheaper too.Report

That was by no means a shot at anyone here. I have heard a lot of anti-Polian stuff from Pats fans over the years (much of it for obvious reason) and I have agreed with some of it. But the guy’s resume is about as good as it gets in that business.Report
