Tom Brady Touchdown Trivia

-by DNOMN8R314

This is a relatively uneventful period on the football calendar, so I feel no shame in posting an article which may be interesting but serves not much of a practical analytical purpose. Here are some trivial factoids about Tom Brady’s career touchdown passes.

(All information from Pro Football Reference.)

(If you’d like to take my quizzes about all the players who have caught touchdown passes from Brady, here is the regular season quiz and here is the postseason one. If you do take the quiz, please do so before reading the article, which includes some of the answers.)

  • Brady has thrown his 428 regular season TDs to 60 different players, which I believe is second all time to Brett Favre’s 61. (I say “I believe” because I haven’t found an official list of record holders in this category.)
  • Along with those in the regular season, Brady has thrown 56 playoff TDs, most in history. Joe Montana is second, with 45. Second among active players is Aaron Rodgers, who has thrown 32. (Peyton Manning, by the way, had 40.)
  • Brady’s playoff touchdown passes have been distributed to 24 different players.
  • Tight end Rob Gronkowski is tops in both regular season and playoff TDs from Brady (64 and 9, respectively). Gronkowski is also the only player with over 1,000 total yards of touchdowns from Brady: 950 in the regular season, and 101 in the playoffs. However, one other player has more postseason yards worth of Brady touchdowns: wide receiver Deion Branch, whose four playoff Brady TDs total 139 yards. (Two of the four were at least 60 yards.)
  • There are only two players who have caught touchdown passes from Brady in the playoffs but not in the regular season, and they did so in the same game: fullback James Develin and tackle Nate Solder, in the ’14-’15 AFC Championship Game shellacking of the Colts.
  • The player with the most Brady TDs in the regular season who did not catch any from him in the playoffs? Tight end Christian Fauria, with 13.
  • No player currently has caught exactly five regular season TDs from Brady. Three players have six: wide receivers Danny Amendola and Jabar Gaffney, and tight end Tim Wright.
  • Of the top 10 players with the most regular season Brady TDs, four are tight ends. Gronkowski, Aaron Hernandez (18), Daniel Graham (17), and Benjamin Watson (17).
  • Two active players are in the top five for catching Brady regular season touchdowns: Gronk, as mentioned before, and wide receiver Julian Edelman, in fifth place with 21. He needs four to pass Branch for fourth place.
  • The player with the most regular season Brady TDs who caught them all in the same season is wide receiver Brandon LaFell, catching seven in 2014. In second place? Wright, also in 2014.
  • The player who averaged the longest regular season touchdown from Brady, with a minimum of five scores, is wide receiver David Patten, whose 16 touchdown receptions total 437 yards, an average of over 27 yards. (The longest postseason average, with a minimum of two scores, is Branch.)
  • Six players have caught a touchdown pass from Brady of longer than 80 yards: Wes Welker (99 yards), Patten (91), Shane Vereen (83, and as a running back the only non-WR on this list), Troy Brown (82), Sam Aiken (81), and Aaron Dobson (81). (This is my favorite Patriots trivia question.)
  • Brown’s 82-yarder is the only touchdown pass thrown by Brady in overtime. It’s also the front-page thumbnail for this article.
  • 134 of Brady’s regular season touchdowns were go-ahead scores; another 25 tied the game. While this includes early touchdowns (for instance, going from 0-0 to 7-0), that is still 159 touchdown passes – 37% of his total – that either tied the game or gave the Patriots the lead.
  • In the playoffs, 19 of Brady’s touchdowns were go-ahead, and 4 tied the game, making 23 (41%) that changed the status of the lead.
  • Brady threw at least one touchdown pass in the 2015 regular season to six players he had not thrown one to before: tight end Scott Chandler, wide receiver Keshawn Martin, and running backs Dion Lewis, LeGarrette Blount, Brandon Bolden, and James White. (Also, for most definitely not the last time, please stop misspelling Keshawn Martin’s first name as Keyshawn or KeShawn. PLEASE.)
  • Brady has thrown 106 regular season scores to players currently on the active roster. From most to least, those players are Gronkowski, Julian Edelman, Danny Amendola, Dobson, White, Bolden, Lewis, Martin, and Blount.
  • The only last name with more than one Brady TD recipient is Johnson. Wide receivers Bethel, Chad, and Charles Johnson scored on at least one Brady throw. However, Chad’s last name was Ochocinco during his one season in New England.
  • Gronkowski by himself has caught as many regular season touchdown passes from Brady as all Patriots wearing No. 81. (This is a random factoid DNOM article; did you really think uniform numbers wouldn’t come up at some point?) Donning those digits, wide receiver Randy Moss caught 39 touchdowns, Hernandez 12 (he had 18 from Brady but six were while wearing No. 85), Wright 6, Bethel Johnson 4, wideout Donald Hayes 2, and Charles Johnson 1.
  • 87 is the uniform number with the most TD catches from Brady, as in addition to Gronkowski, wideouts David Givens and Reche Caldwell have scored on Brady throws.
  • Only three Patriots have caught TD passes from Brady while wearing more than one uniform number: Hernandez (85 and 81), Branch (83 and 84), and wideout Donté Stallworth (18 and 19). Of these, only Branch caught at least one playoff touchdown in both numbers.
  • Brady has thrown at least one touchdown pass to players in every uniform number range of 10 (20-29, 30-39, etc.) except 1-9 and 90-99. If playoff touchdowns are excluded, he is also missing 70-79 (Solder, wearing 77, is his only 70s TD). All of these have more than one player in the range except 50-59 (linebacker Mike Vrabel, 50) and 60-69 (tackle Tom Ashworth, 68). Brady has completed passes to a player wearing a number in the 90s (defensive tackle Dan Klecko, 90, who caught three) and single digits (wide receiver Isaiah Stanback, with two receptions in his one game wearing No. 9), but none went for a touchdown.

Now back to your regularly scheduled Patriots programming.

Hugo was my homeboy LaFeteMattDog Yeah, I realized that. It was just funny that the announcers on NBA TV said it and didn’t question it at all. Like, the guy was just drafted, he was in college for one year, and I don’t think they put 30 year olds in the developmental summer leagues…Wake up guys!!!

Good news and bad news from tonight. The good news is they seemed to have a lot of offensive rebounds. The bad news is that was because they can’t seem to hit the side of a barn with those shots.

Since Pedroia is on the ballot too, you can vote for Lamb on the NL side.

We need people voting for Jake Lamb for the NL Final Vote for the MLB All-Star Game. Lamb leads the NL in slugging percentage and is Top 10 in both Fangraphs and Baseball Reference WAR.

Anyone else watching the Celtics Summer League game? Of course, tonight I watch it and Brown’s not playing.

BoSoxJim Neil X. OK, but I think that’s what Shefty was trying to say in his tweet–it’s not that John has other people who usually reach out to the players, it’s that Elway talked to Von directly instead of going through his agent.  Some agents really hate that, BTW, as do some players.

BoSoxJim Lots of times all negotiations are between the GM and the agent, and the player is not directly involved.

Adam Schefter✔
@AdamSchefter
Broncos GM John Elway personally reached out to Von Miller over holiday weekend to lay groundwork for new deal
isn’t that elway’s responsibility as GM? or does he usually have a 3rd party reach out to the players?

BoSoxJim Broseidon King of The Broceans Deadsmack #freebrady There is no chance the Celtics trade for Westbrook without an extension in place. That alone ruins his value.
